I write to draw attention to what I 

consider to be an accident waiting 

to happen. At Rectory Road next 

to the zigzag lines at the school 

crossing there is a van parked 

almost permanently. The danger 

of someone causing an accident 

at the school crossing is obvious. 

Perhaps the Council or the Police 

could do something about a before 

it is too late.

Dear Editor 

I was interested to read the article 

in the April edition of Mersea Life 

about the forthcoming Centenary 

Vintage Fly-In Day to be held at 

Stowe Maries Aerodrome on 13 

May 2012 to commemorate the 

centenary of the formation of 

the Royal Flying Corps and the 

reference to the destruction of 

Zeppelin L48 on 17 June 1917. 

L48 was a new type of airship 

designed to fl y higher than previous 

models so as to avoid interception 

by British fi ghter aircraft. It was one 

of two Zeppelins which reached 

England that night, the other being 

L42. It had been planned to send 

six airships in total but L46 and L47 

were unable to be deployed due to 

strong winds at their bases and L44 

and L45 had to turn back due to 

engine problems. 

It was intended that L48 and L42 

would attack London if possible 

but in the event neither was able to 

do so. L42 mistakenly dropped its 

bombs on Ramsgate, believing it to 

be Dover, killing three civilians and 

wounding fourteen others. 

L48 dropped its bombs on the 

villages of Falkenham and Kirton 

and Martlesham near Ipswich, miles 

away from its intended revised 

target Harwich. L42 returned to 

Germany unharmed but L48, with 

two engines out of action and other 

technical problems, was set ablaze 

and crashed at Theberton, Suffolk 

following the attack by RFC aircraft. 

It is incredible in the circumstances 

that three members of the nineteen 

man crew survived. The crew 

member, who later died from 

his injuries, passed away on 11 

November 1918 - ironically the 

fi nal day of the war. As mentioned, 

Second Lieutenant Watkins of 

37 Squadron Royal Flying Corps 

was credited with the “kill” despite 

the fact that other aircraft were 

simultaneously involved in the attack. 

The other aircraft operated from 

the RFC Experimental Station 

Orfordness on the Suffolk coast. In 

fact L48 was actually in the vicinity 

of Orfordness when the aircraft 

were dispatched to intercept it. 

The fi rst two were in the air shortly 

before Watkins took off from 

Gardener’s Farm, Goldhanger, 

Essex at 2.00 am. 

The fi rst aircraft was unable to 

gain suffi cient altitude to be within 

effective range of L48 and returned 

to base. The second aircraft was 

a two seater fl own by Second 

Lieutenant Holder whose observer/ 

gunner was Sergeant Ashby. A third 

aircraft, fl own by Captain Saundby, 

was dispatched just before 3.00 

am. By this time L48’s captain, 

Lieutenant Commander Eichler, had 

decided to descend on the basis a 

tail wind would assist the escape 

homewards across the North Sea. 

Now at a lower altitude, and with the 

arrival of Watkins, the airship was 

within range of the machine guns 

of all three RFC aircraft which sent 

streams of explosive and incendiary 

rounds towards it as they attacked 

from various directions. By 3.25am 

the airship was plummeting 

earthwards in fl ames, its vulnerable 

hydrogen gas cells set alight by the 

attackers’ machine guns. 

In recognition of their conspicuous 

gallantry all three RFC pilots were 

awarded the Military Cross and 

Ashby the Military Medal- the 

MC was only awarded to offi cers 

in those days. It is believed the 

authorities decided to offi cially credit 

the Canadian Watkins with the “kill” 

hoping this might inspire additional 

Canadians to rally to fi ght for the 

British Empire. Sadly Watkins and 

Ashby did not survive the war. 

Saundby, later Air Marshall Sir 

Robert Saundby DFC, became Sir 

Arthur “Bomber” Harris’ deputy in 

the Second World War. Holder, later 

Squadron Leader Frank Douglas 

Holder OBE, MC, JP, DL, also 

served in the RAF in the Second

World War and afterwards ran a 

business in Chelmsford, served 

as deputy mayor of the town, 

became the commanding offi cer of 

Chelmsford Squadron Air Training 

Corps and later the President of 

East Essex Wing Air Training Corps. 

Four years before Holder’s death 

in 1978 at the age of 81, I was 

privileged to meet him when he 

presented me with a trophy when 

I was a member of Braintree 

Squadron Air Training Corps.

appeared in the Braintree & 

Witham Times and I still have the 

newspaper cutting. 

The Stow Maries Aerodrome is a 

fascinating place which offers a 

unique insight into the RFC/RAF 

during the First World War and an 

appreciation of the brave airmen 

who defended our country, and 

those who supported them on the 

ground, at a time when fl ight was 

still in its infancy.

Planning 

During the open session a 

resident raised strong objections 

to dwellings – one in particular – 

which are being erected at the rear 

of his premises in Queensway. The 

resident contends that the threestorey 

dwelling in question is being 

erected at the wrong angle so that 

it overlooks his property with some 

of the windows facing directly into 

some of his rooms. He was told that 

he needs to fi nd evidence that the 

overlooking dwelling contravenes 

the plans, and was advised to 

contact the legal department at 

Colchester BC. Councillors will 

investigate the situation to ascertain 

if there has been any breach of the 

plans. They noted that, when they 

had originally examined the plans, 

they had recommended that they 

be refused. 

Litter 

It was reported that an annual 

spring clean of Tiptree had been 

undertaken the previous day 

(Sunday) and that one ton of 

rubbish, including discarded car 

tyres and a mattress, had been 

collected - this in spite of regular 

six-weekly Sunday morning 

litter-picks. Mr Terry Vickery who 

organises the Tiptree litter-picks 

intends to mount a campaign 

to make residents aware of the 

problems of litter and of fl y-tipping 

in the village and to encourage 

them either to deposit their rubbish 

in the bins provided or to take it 

home with them for disposal. He 

is particularly concerned about 

the numbers of ‘doggy bags’, 

complete with contents, which are 

left hanging on shrubbery in various 

locations and which obviously 

present a health hazard. Mr Vickery 

emphasised that the litter situation 

was much more serious on this 

occasion than previously and 

councillors agreed that there has 

been a signifi cant increase in recent 

months. 

Maternity consultation 

It was reported that North East 

Essex NHS is inviting suggestions 

for the improvement of its maternity 

services from members of the 

public. Drop-in sessions have 

therefore been arranged where 

those using, or having used, 

those services may go to offer 

their suggestions; these are: in 

Colchester on April 10 and 17, and 

in Harwich on April 24.

Following last month’s article on neck pain this month we will explore the subject of headaches which according to the statistics 

affect more than 10million people in the UK fortunately for the sufferers most are easily treated. 

Most headaches aren’t serious and 

can be treated with simple lifestyle 

changes such as rest, reducing stress, 

keeping hydrated and eating correctly. 

Osteopathic treatment can also be very 

benefi cial for some types of headache. 

What are headaches? 

There are two classifi cations of 

headaches, primary, as listed below 

and secondary which are due to 

another underlying health problem. 

When patients attend the clinic 

with headache they are thoroughly 

screened to ensure their suitability for 

treatment by taking a detailed medical 

history and conducting a few simple 

tests. Today we’re going to discuss 

some types of Primary Headache that 

we regularly deal with in the clinic. 

Primary Headaches 

Tension headaches 

Tension headaches are probably the 

most common form of headache and are 

caused by muscular and tension over 

the scalp and around the eyes. Common 

sites include the back of the skull where 

the muscles of the neck attach, the 

temple where muscles that move the jaw 

are located, and the forehead. 

It is thought that pain is caused when 

chronic tightness in these muscles 

causes them to tire, obscure blood fl ow, 

or irritates nerves. These headaches 

can be linked to poor vision or incorrect 

prescription glasses, dehydration, 

stress and fatigue. 

Tension headaches may last anywhere 

from 15minutes to a period of weeks or 

months. The pain is often described as 

a band-like tightness or pressure. It may 

be felt at the back of the head, upper 

neck, temples and around the eyes. 

Gentle stretching of the muscles, 

traction and articulation of the neck 

during osteopathic treatment often 

helps to calm the symptoms. 

Migraines 

People describe migraines as an 

intense pounding or throbbing pain on 

one, or both sides of the head. They 

often occur with visual disturbances 

such as blurring, fl oaters and double or 

tunnel vision. In some cases they even 

cause temporary blindness. Tinnitus, 

facial pins and needles and muscular 

weakness can also be experienced. 

Figures suggest that around 15% 

women and 6% men are affected. 

Migraines are what are known as 

vascular headaches, which means 

that they are caused by disturbances 

in blood fl ow. Many patients notice 

strong smells and sounds trigger their 

migraines as well as certain foods and 

drinks, commonly red wine, coffee, 

chocolate and cheeses. 

Most people treat their migraines 

successfully with over-the-counter 

medication and avoiding sounds, smells 

and foods that aggravate them. If 

they’re severe, however, you may need 

stronger migraine-specifi c medication 

that is only available on prescription 

from a doctor. Many patients fi nd that 

Migraine headaches are relieved by 

Osteopathic treatment directed at the 

upper back and neck. 

Cluster headaches 

Cluster headaches are less common than 

migraines and the exact cause is unknown. 

It is suspected to be of similar origin 

to migraine in that a dysfunction in the 

regulation of blood flow leads to symptoms. 

Pain is located around the eyes and 

temples and is usually one sided. 

Cervicogenic Headaches 

The term “Cervicogenic” comes from 

the fact that the pain experienced is 

due to a problem in the cervical portion 

of the spine (the neck). Cervicogenic 

headaches are caused by irritation of 

joints and muscles in the neck. When 

neck muscles spasm they can put 

pressure on nerves that travel to the 

head and radiate pain into the scalp. 

Joints in the top of the neck also share 

a nerve supply with the scalp and can 

cause pain referral. A whiplash injury 

is a common cause of this type of 

headache. 

The classical symptom of a 

cervicogenic headache is pain that 

begins in the neck and progressively 

moves into the head. Those with the 

condition often experience a lowered 

tolerance of pain, making management 

of the pain sometimes diffi cult. Head 

and neck movement, rather than 

offering relief, can often make the 

headache worse. The neck usually 

becomes very tender to the touch 

upon the onset of the headache and 

responds very well to Osteopathic 

treatment.

decided to write to Colchester BC to 

enquire into the legal position and 

the future plans for the house, and 

to invite a Colchester BC offi cer to 

attend a council meeting where/ 

when the matter can be discussed. 

Grove Road playing field 

An alternative plan for the playing 

fi eld extension land was received 

from Colchester BC. Councillors felt 

that the greater area of shrubbery 

in this plan would lead to increased 

maintenance costs and to hiding 

places (dens) for youngsters - for 

questionable activities. They agreed 

to write to Colchester BC insisting 

that they wish to adhere to the 

original plans for the area ie less 

perimeter shrubbery and a greater 

open playing area. 

Spring Show 

Tiptree Garden Club and 

Horticultural Society held their 

Spring Show on Saturday March 

the 24th. 

With the mild weather at the 

beginning of the winter it seemed 

as though the spring fl owers would 

be over before the show, but the 

cold spell after Christmas slowed 

them up and we had a colourful 

display of spring bulbs and shrubs 

and a few exhibits in the vegetable 

section. 

The cup winners were as follows: 

The CHALLENGE CUP for most 

points in the fl ower section was 

won jointly by David Mansfi eld and 

Leigh Arnold. 

The HECKFORD SALVER for 

best fl ower exhibit, with an 

unusual display of daffodils was

was Jane Wells.

Licensing 

A request was received from The 

Anchor public house in Station 

Road for increased opening 

hours - until 1am on Fridays and 

Saturdays. Councillors considered 

this unacceptable especially in 

view of the fact that The Anchor is 

surrounded by housing, and they 

recommended that closing time 

should be 11.30pm in keeping with 

village public house time.

St Luke’s Church 

a) Men’s Supper Club - The last 

meeting of the winter session 

of the Men’s Supper Club, 

attended by 48 men, was held 

on a Tuesday evening recently 

when Mrs Lynne Barker gave 

a fascinating presentation, with 

videos, of the work of the Mission 

Aviation Fellowship (MAF), a 

Christian organisation which, in 

small aeroplanes, fl ies medical and 

educational supplies to remote and 

almost inaccessible parts of the 

world. 

b) Palm Sunday - On Palm Sunday 

(April 1) Parish Communion 

commenced in the church 

extension and, after the distribution 

and blessing of palm crosses, 

the congregation processed into 

church. During the course of the 

service the Passion of our Lord 

according to Mark was read in 

semi-dramatic form by members of 

the congregation. This service was 

followed by a service of Morning 

Worship attended by the children of 

Sunday Club.

were transported to Alaska and 

the Yukon when Mrs Sheila Steer

grains of gold she found while 

prospecting. 

We will welcome Brian D’Arcy RVM 

to our May meeting when he will 

talk about the Crown Jewels and 

Royal Regalia. This meeting will 

take place in St. Luke’s extension 

on May 8th at 7.30pm. 

Further events during the summer 

months include a lunch to celebrate 

the Queen’s Jubilee on June 1st. 

Those members going to see ‘Top 

Hat’ on May 22nd are doing it in 

style having afternoon tea at the 

Waldorf Hotel before going to the 

performance. The coach will leave 

Tiptree at 2pm. 

North Fambridge 

WI are hosting a 2 mile walk on 

June 13th for those needing the 

exercise after all the above events! 

Essex Federation notifi ed us that 

Denman College in Oxfordshire is 

to host an ‘Essex Weekend ‘ on 

April 5th – 7th 2013, when seven 

different courses will be available to 

those attending. 

Obviously there is a limited number 

of places available so early booking 

is advised. The possibility of 

starting a monthly lunch club was 

met with approval and further 

information will be available at our 

next meeting.

Planning 

Councillors recommended 

approval of plans for the demolition 

of existing buildings and the 

construction of four two-bedroomed 

bungalows on the site of the former 

medical centre in Church Road. 

There followed the annual parish 

meeting when the chairman of 

the council and the chairmen of 

committees presented their annual 

reports. 

There followed a meeting of the 

parish council. 

Resignation 

The chairman reported that the 

resignation from the parish council 

of Cllr Terry Worlledge, owing to 

increased outside commitments, 

had been received. 

Co-option 

Mrs Dianne Coe, a former parish 

councillor, expressed an interest 

in being co-opted on to the parish 

council where there is a vacant set. 

Later in the meeting councillors 

agreed unanimously to co-opt Mrs 

Coe on to the council. 

Cemetery Land 

It was reported that Colchester 

BC is prepared to hand over the 

designated land for a cemetery to 

the parish council. 

Councillors were 

urged to press for the borough 

and the developers to meet 

transfer fees. 

Maytree Court 

It was noted that Maytree Court 

needs to be extensively refurbished 

as it no longer meets modern 

accommodation standards. 

Councillors felt that they needed to 

know the intentions of the housing 

authority concerning Maytree Court 

before making their views known on 

the possible future of the premises. 

Refuse bags 

The clerk reported that the cost of 

garden sacks - available from the 

parish offi ce, Mynott Court - has 

increased to £3.50 per sack. 

A year’s supply of both the black 

and the clear plastic bags has now 

been distributed to households in 

part of Tiptree. Distribution in the 

remainder of Tiptree will take place 

during the week of May 1. 

Any household that has not 

received sacks by the end of that 

week should report this to Angel

Prunus 

May Garden Life

There are various sub genus which are to numerous to name here, 

but I will mention Laurocerasus as you will of come across this, the 

Portuguese laurel (p.lusitanica) with its shiny elliptical leaves and white 

fl owers. Also widely grown is the cherry laurel (p.laurocerasus) with its 

‘candle’ like small white fl owers in April. Both of these make an ideal 

windbreak if grown as a hedge, and the best time for pruning is July or 

August time.

years, (June 

up to the end 

of August is 

the time for 

this). 

What a 

wonderful sight these trees are in May time. Flowering Cherries, 

Plums, Almonds, Peaches are what normally come to mind when we 

think of the Prunus genus, but don’t forget the winter fl owering one. 

Prunus Autumnalis Subhirlella will bloom late autumn through to spring 

(somewhat sporadically if it snows!). For a good colour chose ‘Rosea’ 

with its dainty delicate pink fl owers.

Aardvark Birth! 

Colchester Zoo’s group of aardvarks celebrated another birth of a 

healthy offspring on the 20th March 2012! 

Female aardvark, Oq, gave birth to her 7th baby 

at around 11.30am on the 20th March, with 

the baby a good healthy size and continuing to 

develop well alongside the care of mum and its 

keepers! 

Oq and baby are currently housed in the birthing burrow whilst the baby 

grows strong. They will be able to return to the rest of the group within 

approximately a month, when the youngster will be strong enough 

to survive any bumps from the rest of the group who are notoriously 

clumsy. The birthing burrow is off show, but visitors can see Oq and 

her baby via a closed circuit television link to a large screen in the main 

viewing tunnel of the zoo’s Aardvark Burrow. 

This latest birth continues the group’s status as one of the most 

successful breeding groups in Europe and the only successful group 

to breed in the UK. Aardvarks are native to Southern Egypt and South 

Africa living mainly in the sub-Saharan areas. Their habitat is generally 

grasslands and open woodland and their diet consists of Ants, termites, 

fruit and other insects. According to the IUCN Red List Aardvarks 

current status in the wild is vulnerable due to changes in land use and 

intensive crop farming.

Suffolk and Essex Small Animal Welfare (SESAW) is a registered charity devoted 

to the welfare of needy animals. A variety of animals pass through their doors - 

many are abandoned, some are victims of accidents, most need a home. Volunteers 

devote hours looking after them until owners are found. Those who can’t 

be homed are fostered or become permanent SESAW residents. 

Beau is a 5 year old Red Cairn Terrier X. He doesn’t 

like other dogs and would be best as the only pet. Stray 

from the dog pound. 

Brucie is an 18 month old Jack Russell Terrier. Needs 

a quiet home and very gentle handling as he is a bit 

nervous. 

Bobby is a lively 8 year old terrier. He’s looking for an 

experienced, active home where he can get plenty of 

walks and games with balls and toys. Bobby is either 

deaf or very hard of hearing, so he should be walked on 

a long lead. He enjoys being with people and would be 

best as the only pet so that he can get the attention he 

needs. 

Jack is a sweetheart but has lived a fairly sheltered life 

and his new owners must be prepared to socialise him. 

He cannot live with young children.

Life and death gambles of World War One fliers 

By our special correspondent - continued from our April issue 

The gamble that attended every 

mission undertaken by the 

young fl iers of World War One 

is illustrated by the deaths of six 

pilots of 37 Squadron who died 

not in battle but in accidents. 

Three are buried in Stow 

churchyard. 

R.W. Mouritzen died after 

colliding with an obstacle on the 

aerodrome; E.G. Mucklow (who, 

for some reason, enlisted in the 

RFC as C. L. Milburn) crashed 

and E.C.H.R Nicholls died after 

getting into a spin. 

One 37 Squadron fatality, 

Captain A.B.Kynoch, was 

searching for an intruder when 

his plane collided with another, 

from 61 Squadron, on the same 

mission. 

Despite fears the old Stow 

aerodrome might be lost, 

historians successfully argued 

that its old buildings be saved for 

posterity.

most complete example of a 

permanent Great War airfi eld. 

There is tremendous local 

interest, right down to looking 

after church memorials, and this 

site must be preserved for future 

generations”. 

Harry Turner bought Flamberds 

farm in 1914. Part of it was 

requisitioned in 1916. The 

brick buildings, though, 

were not begun until 1918 to 

accommodate the three fl ights 

and headquarters. The fi rst fl iers 

had the tents and wooden sheds 

common to other aerodromes. 

At the southern end of the 

site, alongside the fl ying fi eld, 

were the offi cers’ mess, an 

accommodation block, the pilots’ 

ready rooms, squadron offi ces, 

a water tower, and other ranks’ 

mess hall. Opposite the offi cers’ 

mess were the offi cers’ barrack 

block, the female block, and the 

HQ reception building. 

North of that group, beyond the 

parade ground, were workshops, 

dope shop, transport sheds, 

blacksmith’s shop, mortuary, 

ammunition store and fuel 

store. The generator 

house was on the 

western edge of 

the site, near the 

aerodrome 

entrance, then 

at the junction of 

Martins Lane and 

Strawberry Hall 

Lane. 

Squadron HQ was a 

few miles away at 

Woodham Mortimer, 

with ‘A’ Flight at Rochford, 

and ‘C’ Flight at Goldhanger. 

The aerodrome covered three 

fi elds to the south of Flambierds 

farmhouse plus three on the 

adjoining Old Whitmans; hedge 

removal gave a total of 120 

acres. 

In June 1918 the squadron HQ 

moved onto the aerodrome so 

all three fl ights could be better 

coordinated, and the squadron 

was offi cially classifi ed as a 

night fi ghter unit. The war ended 

famously at 11am on November 

1918 and three months later the 

squadron fl ew to Biggin Hill to be 

disbanded and renumbered 39 

Squadron. 

In the parish churchyard 

Milburn’s memorial is a roughhewn 

granite cross. Mouritzen’s 

was a stone cross on a plinth. 

Nicholls’s grave was fi rst in the 

newly consecrated extension, 

the old churchyard being full. It 

is under the horse chestnut tree. 

Ridley’s grave is to the east of 

that, alongside the path. 

After closure in 1919, it was 

surprising to locals that the 

aerodrome, still largely intact, 

was not re-opened for World 

War Two – but powers-that-be 

decided instead to update the 

aerodrome at Rochford. 

The land returned to agriculture. 

Some of the buildings were 

used to house farm workers, 

others provided storage, chicken 

houses, and workshops.’ 

In 1942 Stow was proposed as a 

possible location for one of six 

Essex airfi elds to accommodate 

the expanding 8th Air Force in 

England. Designated USAAF 

Station number163, it would 

have taken in most, if not all, of 

the World War One aerodrome 

but for some reason the idea was 

dropped.

A lucky escape for Stow! 

Today, it is said to be the 

best example of a permanent 

aerodrome of that period, [A 

survey by the Royal Commission 

on Historical Monuments, made 

in 1997, found that some 20 

buildings survived, some of them 

‘crudely adapted for agricultural 

purposes’. 

The land continued to be farmed 

by the Turner family until the 

death of Hugh Turner in 2004. 

When in 2008 the Turner family 

put the site of the aerodrome and 

its buildings up for sale, Maldon 

District Council, alerted to its 

historical signifi cance, imposed a 

conservation order on it. 

It was bought by Steve Wilson 

and Russell Savory. Since then, 

by a combination of private 

enterprise and the work of a 

dedicated group of volunteers, 

the workshop, smithy, mortuary, 

pilots’ ready rooms and squadron 

offi ces have been restored. The 

latter building houses a museum, 

created by Ivor Dallinger, on 

whose research over many years 

this article is based. 

In 2010 a memorial to the 

men and women of 37 (Home 

Defence) Squadron was erected 

by public subscription on the 

former parade ground, at a cost 

of some £10,000. 

It’s well worth a visit.

Seasonal Recipe

Head Chef at The Hare and Hounds, Layer Breton 

Steve’s English 

Breakfast Salad 

This is a quick and easy 

recipe that looks very 

‘cheffy’ and will impress 

friends at a dinner party. 

This starter is one of our 

main-stay dishes at the 

Hare and Hounds, Layer 

Breton. I had so many complaints 

when we took it off the menu, that 

it had to go straight back on! 

Serves 1 (but can be easily 

multiplied to any number) 

Ingredients 

1 Slice of Toast, cut into a 5-8 cm 

round 

15g Mixed Salad Leaves 

2 Cherry Tomatoes, halved 

4 Cocktail Sausages 

1 Rasher of Smoked bacon, cut 

into 15mm wide strips 

½ Flat Mushroom, thinly sliced 

1 Quail’s Egg 

10g Butter, melted 

Salad Dressing, to dress salad 

Balsamic Glaze, to drizzle 

Method 

Place the oil into a hot frying-pan 

and cook the mini sausages until 

brown all over. 

Remove, keeping warm. Now fry 

the bacon pieces until cooked as 

desired. Remove keeping warm 

with the sausages. 

Meanwhile, halve the tomatoes 

and place under the grill. 

Place the mushroom slices in 

melted butter and also place 

under the grill. Cut a 5 – 8 cm 

circle out of the bread slice and 

toast both sides. 

Just before serving, fry the quail’s 

egg. 

To serve 

Place the toast in the centre of 

a warmed serving plate, top with 

the salad leaves. 

Place alternately around the 

toast, a mini sausage, then a 

grilled tomato half and so on. 

Dress the salad with the dressing, 

top with the mushroom slices and 

bacon pieces. 

Top these with the fried quails 

egg, drizzle with balsamic glaze 

and serve immediately.

Mario and Beryl Casella opened the former Prince of Wales Inn at Inworth 

as a fi ne dining Italian Restaurant on 19th May 2011. They express their 

thanks to all of their customers – occasional and regulars, who have

Contemporary Refurbishment of the former Prince of Wales - and what

those who love good food and ales. 

Given a free hand by the owners 

of this idyllic country pub - Kerry 

and Mark King - at the helm in the 

kitchen is Steve Chase with a wealth 

of experience. He has returned to 

his Colchester home and joined the 

team at the Hare and Hounds, where 

last April he took over as Head Chef. 

“I’ve always been unconventional,” 

says Steve “and think I was born 

full of wanderlust, so I followed 

my heart and did what everyone 

dreams of and travelled for 20-odd 

years, where I cooked in weird 

and wonderful places around the 

world, from top Michelin starred 

restaurants, to make-shift kitchens 

in jungles and deserts with the oil 

industry, and pubs in the UK”. 

“Like all chefs, I’m a bit of a Pirate, 

and have stolen, pillaged and 

plundered recipes, spices and 

ingredients from all over the world, 

in fact everywhere I have been, then 

modifi ed them to fi t where I am, 

trends or environments. That’s not 

to say I haven’t put together my own 

recipes”, he adds quickly. 

We have stepped the food up one 

or two gears and provide restaurant 

quality food in a fantastic pub 

setting. It may be informal, you 

could say high-end casual dining but 

we allow our food to do the talking. 

We believe in the excellence of our 

ingredients, providing honest and 

skilfully prepared food at reasonable 

prices. 

All our products, where possible, 

are free-range, sourced locally and 

shape our menus. Everyone claims 

this, but we do try - all our main 

suppliers are within 30 miles of the 

pub and where possible we use little 

artisan type suppliers (Frank Wright 

Butchers, Colchester; Blackberry 

Bakery, Stanway; Fish from Mersea; 

ice cream and sorbets from Ice 

Impressions, Colchester; preserves 

from Wilkins and Sons, Tiptree - to 

name but a few). 

That’s not to say we limit ourselves 

to local produce. Having found so 

many great products on his travels, 

Steve feels that why not use them 

here and give a spin on some of our 

nation’s dishes, after all England 

has taken many dishes from all over 

the globe and made it their own”. 

Steve does not limit himself to any 

particular style, as you will fi nd 

curries next to fi sh and chips, or our 

coastal beef burgers that contain 

seaweed next to game dishes.

and we use eggs from our own 

chickens for breakfast and you can’t 

get any more local than that!

blossom is out, bees dance around 

and lambs in the fi elds - the days

Emergency plan 

It was noted that Tiptree’s emergency 

plan requires updating. An outline 

of plans, as recommended by 

Colchester BC, will be requested and 

it was suggested councillors take 

part in a paper exercise, with invited 

borough offi cers to advise them. 

Broadband 

The results of a survey in Tiptree 

of broadband speeds indicates that 

these vary greatly within even very 

short distances, but that speeds in 

Tiptree compare favourably with 

those in neighbouring villages. 

Evensong 

An invitation to representatives 

of the parish council to attend a 

special Jubilee Choral Evensong in 

Chelmsford Cathedral on Sunday 

May 27 was received. 

Tea dance 

Tiptree Co-op Community Group

United Reformed Church 

There will be a meeting of the 

Ladies’ Breakfast Club on Saturday

Cake stall 

Tiptree Preschool Playgroup had 

a very successful cake stall last 

Thursday when they raised £118, 

with £118 of draw tickets being sold. 

The committee wish to thank the 

generous public who came and 

bought cakes and draw tickets, 

Barclay’s Bank for the venue for 

the sale and last but not least the 

parents, grandparents and staff 

who made and donated an amazing 

amount of cakes. 

Death of councillor 

Before the start of the Council 

meeting a minute’s silence was kept 

in memory of Cllr Mike Robinson 

who died on Saturday (April 21). 

As a parish councillor for a number 

of years, and latterly as vice-chair, 

Mike Robinson worked tirelessly for 

the Tiptree community and played 

an important role in establishing the 

community centre. 

Tiptree Heath 

The Tiptree Heath community 

warden reported that two pony 

information sessions had been held 

the previous week to demonstrate 

the benefi ts of winter grazing by the 

ponies. 

She said that the ponies have been 

a big draw for members of the 

public who have treated them with 

due respect. 

The ponies will leave The Heath on 

May 1 and will return in September 

for the duration of the winter. Some 

cows will return during May and will 

stay until September. 

The summer wildlife walks have 

begun, the next being an evening 

bird walk on May 15. 

Fundraising as an alternative to 

the Heath Fair is going well, with a 

successful stall outside Tyler’s in 

The Centre. 

The Friends of Tiptree Heath 

(FoTH) will be holding an Auction 

of Promises in St Luke’s extension 

on Saturday May 12, together 

with a Heath Art and Photography 

Exhibition. 

Grove Road playing field 

a) It was decided that the new 

family shelter should be lit and 

should be protected by CCTV 

cameras. 

It was agreed that both equipment 

and costs should be investigated 

and that the advice of Colchester 

Crime Prevention Offi cer Colin Stiff, 

should be sought. 

b) It was decided to link the 

proposed car park with the 

installation of the skatepark. 

Costs for these works and for a 

suitable surface (recycled rubber?) 

for the car park will be investigated.

Park lane land 

There was discussion on the 

maintenance plan for the land, 

particularly in view of the concerns 

of a resident. It was pointed out 

that, depending on soil type, land 

left to itself will quickly become 

overgrown either with birch scrub 

followed by a near-impenetrable 

tangle of oak scrub, or by 

blackthorn. 

Councillors agreed that they 

wished Mr Fred Boot’s plan to 

be left unaltered and will arrange 

a meeting in June to which the 

concerned resident will be invited. 

Councillors acknowledged Mr 

Boot’s long experience and his 

expertise in matters relating to 

conservation, and registered their 

appreciation of his valued work for 

the council over many years. 

Grove Lake site 

A quotation of £300 was accepted 

for the removal of dead wood 

and the removal of overhanging 

branches of three trees which 

overhang a garden in Holly Way 

Tiptree in Bloom 

Perrywood Nurseries have offered 

to donate two tubs fi lled with red, 

white, and blue fl owers to be sited 

in front of the community centre, 

and to provide plants for the 

large container in Church Road. 

Councillors were delighted with 

this generous offer which they 

accepted gladly. It was noted that 

the matter of watering will need to 

be addressed. 

Play area 

It was reported that, contrary 

to a communication received 

from Colchester BC repairs to 

the drainage on the Coriander 

Road play area are considered 

unsatisfactory. The area, it was 

reported, is so uneven, with deep 

holes, that it is a potential hazard. 

A letter will be sent to Colchester, 

with copy to Priti Patel MP, stating 

that immediate work should be 

undertaken or the area closed. 

Trees 

a) A tree for The Centre, to replace 

the one vandalised, is still being 

investigated, problems being 

the small size of aperture, in the 

paving, into which it has to fi t and 

the possibility of there still being 

fragments of roots left deep down. 

b) It was agreed that the Tiptree 

in Bloom memorial tree, now to 

be known also as the Jubilee tree 

should be planted on Windmill 

Green; a councillor and one of the 

council’s workmen will determine 

the exact location.

Tiptree Flower Club 

The May meeting of Tiptree Flower Club will be at St Lukes Church Extn. 

on Thursday 10th May, starting at 7.30 pm. “Modern Contemporary Floristry 

Techniques” is the subject of the evening demonstrated by Sarah Ley- 

Flurrie, who completed a fl oristry course at Writtle College in 2009 and is a 

new demonstrator to the club. 

There will be a well stocked Sales Table for fl ower arrangers and a plant 

stall for all our gardeners, as well as the bookstall for everyone. Tea/coffee 

and biscuits will be served after the demonstration. 

Visitors and new members are always very welcome - Subscriptions now 

due for the year.

St. Luke’s Church, Tiptree. Arts, Crafts and Flower Weekend - Saturday 

10am to 4pm and Sunday Sunday 11am to 4pm (Art & Flowers only). Art

Little Totham 

With a summer of national celebrations looming, the small Essex village 

of Little Totham doesn’t intend to be left out! Displays at the annual fl ower 

festival on June 16th to 18th will illustrate a lifetime’s worth of events to be 

celebrated - marriage, birthdays, family milestones, Mother’s Day, Father’s 

Day etc. The Diamond Jubilee and Olympics will, of course, be included as 

well as Guy Fawkes and VE Day. 

Eleven fl ower arrangers will fi ll All Saints parish church with a sensory 

experience. Visitors can visit 9 village gardens including 2 owned by 

award-winning professionals plus a fi sh expert - a plantsman’s paradise! 

Tickets and maps are obtained from the church where lunches and coffee 

will be available as well as stalls. Cream teas are on sale at one of the 

gardens. The cost is £4 for adults, £3.50 cons, children free, fl oral display 

£2. Tickets valid for the whole weekend. Open: gardens and church Sat
