There are various sub genus which are to numerous to name here,
but I will mention Laurocerasus as you will of come across this, the
Portuguese laurel (p.lusitanica) with its shiny elliptical leaves and white
fl owers. Also widely grown is the cherry laurel (p.laurocerasus) with its
‘candle’ like small white fl owers in April. Both of these make an ideal
windbreak if grown as a hedge, and the best time for pruning is July or
August time.

cherry which
has been well
shaped and
pruned every
two to three
years, (June
up to the end
of August is
the time for
this).
What a
wonderful sight these trees are in May time. Flowering Cherries,
Plums, Almonds, Peaches are what normally come to mind when we
think of the Prunus genus, but don’t forget the winter fl owering one.
Prunus Autumnalis Subhirlella will bloom late autumn through to spring
(somewhat sporadically if it snows!). For a good colour chose ‘Rosea’
with its dainty delicate pink fl owers.
