The Avenue of <strong>the</strong><br />
Volcanoes <strong>and</strong><br />
<strong>the</strong> Devil’s Nose Train<br />
A one week itinerary to discover <strong>the</strong> heart of<br />
<strong>the</strong> central Andes along Humboldt’s ‘Avenue<br />
of <strong>the</strong> Volcanoes’ , <strong>and</strong> its great colonial cities<br />
of Quito <strong>and</strong> Cuenca. Ride ‘<strong>the</strong> most difficult<br />
railway in <strong>the</strong> world’ <strong>and</strong> pause to see <strong>the</strong><br />
Incan ruins of Ingapirca.<br />
Quito<br />
Day 1 You are met on arrival at Quito airport <strong>and</strong> transferred to a<br />
comfortable 3* hotel, your base for 2 nights.<br />
Day 2 BL In <strong>the</strong> morning your guide will meet you at your hotel<br />
<strong>and</strong> take you on a walking tour of <strong>the</strong> Old City. After lunch, visit<br />
<strong>the</strong> Equator at ei<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> unconventional Inti-Ñan museum or <strong>the</strong><br />
Mitad del Mundo <strong>the</strong>me park. (A ride on <strong>the</strong> Pichincha cable car is<br />
an option if time allows <strong>and</strong> conditions are good.)<br />
Avenue of <strong>the</strong> Volcanoes<br />
Day 3 BLD Your guide will collect you from your hotel for <strong>the</strong> drive<br />
down <strong>the</strong> Avenue of <strong>the</strong> Volcanoes.<br />
On your way you visit Cotopaxi NP, exploring <strong>the</strong> Limpiopungo<br />
Lagoon, <strong>and</strong> driving part of <strong>the</strong> way up Cotopaxi. From here you<br />
can walk a fur<strong>the</strong>r 200m to <strong>the</strong> mountain refuge, but take it<br />
slowly–<strong>the</strong> mountain air is thin.<br />
You descend to stay at Hacienda La Ciénega (see p13) for 2 nights.<br />
Day 4 BLD A pleasant day’s touring, visiting <strong>the</strong> villages around<br />
<strong>the</strong> ‘Quilotoa Loop’. Your guide will help you decide whe<strong>the</strong>r to<br />
complete <strong>the</strong> whole loop, or to use part of <strong>the</strong> day for a walk in this<br />
beautiful Andean countryside.<br />
Day 5 BL Continue south this morning along <strong>the</strong> Avenue of <strong>the</strong><br />
Volcanoes to Riobamba, pausing in <strong>the</strong> village of Salasaca to visit a<br />
simple weavers workshop.<br />
Your guide escorts you on a short city tour of Riobamba before<br />
arriving at your hotel in a converted hacienda just out of town.<br />
Pacific coast<br />
Ano<strong>the</strong>r of <strong>Ecuador</strong>’s worlds. Take <strong>the</strong> Ruta del Sol from Guayaquil to sleepy fishing<br />
villages, wild Pacific beaches, whales <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> wildlife of <strong>the</strong> Isla de la Plata, <strong>and</strong><br />
traditional communities with links deep into <strong>the</strong> past.<br />
Day 1 LD You are met on arrival at Guayaquil airport, which has<br />
international <strong>and</strong> domestic connections, or collected from your<br />
hotel in <strong>the</strong> city, by a Spanish speaking driver <strong>and</strong> transferred to<br />
your choice of hotel in <strong>the</strong> Puerto López region at <strong>the</strong> nor<strong>the</strong>rn end<br />
of <strong>the</strong> Ruta del Sol for 4 nights.<br />
With an early start, your driver can include a number of stops en<br />
route. There are small archaeological sites, a nature reserve at Cerro<br />
Blanco, <strong>and</strong> several birding sites. Stop for lunch at Hostería Farallón<br />
Dillon, a quirky nautical <strong>the</strong>me restaurant-cum-antiques barn.<br />
Hotel Atamari offers spacious well appointed cabins set around<br />
a cliff-skirted promontory, with wonderful views for whalewatchers<br />
<strong>and</strong> sunset-gazers. There is a good sized swimming<br />
pool <strong>and</strong> a rocky path descends to a secluded beach at Ayampe.<br />
Mantaraya Lodge is a well-run small hotel set in <strong>the</strong> hills near<br />
Puerto López. Its colourful adobe-style buildings are set around<br />
a lovely pool.<br />
Hostería M<strong>and</strong>ala, right on <strong>the</strong> s<strong>and</strong>s in Puerto López, is a<br />
low-key barefoot eco-style hotel with thatched cabins in welltended<br />
gardens.<br />
Private guided touring • mid-range hotels<br />
Day 2 BLD A full day visit to Machalilla National Park. Visit <strong>the</strong><br />
indigenous village of Agua Blanca (p11), where a guide from<br />
<strong>the</strong> village will show you around <strong>and</strong> introduce you to <strong>the</strong>ir still<br />
traditional way of life. A visit to <strong>the</strong> archaeological museum is also<br />
included. In <strong>the</strong> afternoon visit Los Frailes beach within <strong>the</strong> park.<br />
Day 3 BLD Today you make a full day visit to Isla de la Plata aboard<br />
one of <strong>the</strong> twin-engined motor boats that ply this route. This is a<br />
shared boat excursion. Pelicans <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r sea birds can be seen<br />
during <strong>the</strong> 1½hr crossing; between June <strong>and</strong> September <strong>the</strong>re is a<br />
very good chance of whales <strong>and</strong> dolphins. A local guide joins you<br />
for a tour of <strong>the</strong> isl<strong>and</strong> amid colonies of boobies <strong>and</strong> frigatebirds,<br />
with o<strong>the</strong>r species depending on <strong>the</strong> season.<br />
Day 4 BLD Free day which you might spend by <strong>the</strong> hotel pool, or at<br />
a local beach. Perhaps take a local taxi to visit <strong>the</strong> Presley Norton<br />
archaeological museum <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> small museum of Río Chico. In<br />
season, whale-watching is possible from <strong>the</strong> shore.<br />
Day 5B Morning private transfer with Spanish speaking driver back<br />
to Guayaquil for onward connections in <strong>the</strong> afternoon.<br />
Devil’s Nose Train <strong>and</strong> Ingapirca<br />
Day 6 BL An early start this morning for an exciting ride on <strong>the</strong><br />
Devil’s Nose train, as described in Day 12 of our ‘<strong>Ecuador</strong> Odyssey’,<br />
on page 28. After your train ride you visit <strong>the</strong> Incan site of Ingapirca<br />
<strong>and</strong> travel on to a characterful 3* hotel in Cuenca for a 2 night stay.<br />
Cuenca<br />
Day 7 BL Your guide <strong>and</strong> vehicle are at your comm<strong>and</strong> today for<br />
your choice of exploring Cuenca itself, walking in Cajas national<br />
park, or touring <strong>the</strong> craft villages to <strong>the</strong> south of <strong>the</strong> city.<br />
Day 8 B Your guide takes you to <strong>the</strong> airport for your return flight to<br />
Quito to connect with your international flight home or to continue<br />
your trip, perhaps to <strong>the</strong> Galápagos or <strong>the</strong> Amazon.<br />
