CLAYTON COMMUNITY BAND CONCERT TO
BENEFIT HOSPICE OF JEFFERSON COUNTY
“Whitney Houston Tribute”, “Les Misérables”,
“Braveheart” … and more!’ has been selected
as the theme for the Clayton Community Band’s
first concert of its 2013 season, which will be performed
at 7 PM on May 7th at the Clayton Opera
House. Under the direction of Gloria Hvizdos
Musser, the Band, which serves as the Resident
Ensemble of the Clayton Opera House, will present
the concert as a benefit for Hospice of Jefferson
County. A special note to concert-goers: with
a new ticket policy at the Opera House, all seats
for the Community Band concerts will no longer
be general seating, but rather, each person will
purchase a ticket for a specific seat. Ticket prices
remain at $5.00 each, and any student accompanied
by an adult will continue to be admitted free.
However, the students will need tickets for their
specific (free) seats in the Opera House. All concert-goers
will need tickets.
The Clayton Community Band was founded
in the summer of 2004 and its conductor and
instrumentalists represent many walks of life, a
wide range of ages, and come from hometowns
throughout the North Country and beyond. The
Band truly is a ‘family’ of musicians who gather
together each week because of their love of making
music together. In addition, the Clayton
Community Band has consistently reached out
to assist those in need by donating its concert
proceeds to local charitable organizations such as
Hospice.
The Band’s May 7th concert will showcase a
wide variety of musical styles, tempos and emotions.
Familiar to all will be a medley of well-known
tunes made popular by Whitney Houston; another
medley from the show and movie “Les Misérables”;
and music from the Oscar-nominated
film “Braveheart”. Well known selections of Barry
Manilow will be presented, and audience members
will also be able to reminisce as they listen
to Jimmy Webb’s “MacArthur Park”. Incorporating
a Spanish feel, the Band will perform “Spanish
Fever”, which will feature the percussion section
of the Band, and a Spanish March entitled “El
Conquistador”. Also included in the concert program
will be the popular “When I’m Sixty-Four”;
and two very lyrical pieces entitled “Adagio” and
“Ouachita”. Music donated to the Band by one
of its members in honor and memory of Trombonist
and Band member Gerry Adler, entitled
“Finale from Symphony No. 5” by Shostakovich;
the Band’s signature piece - “March St. Lawrence”
- composed by Gloria H. and Willard I. Musser;
and patriotic selections will complete the evening’s
program. Concert-goers of all ages are welcome
to attend the concert.
In addition to the May 7th concert, the
Clayton Community Band’s 2013 concert season
will include the following dates, with all of the
programs being held at 7 PM at the Clayton Opera
House: July 2nd (“A Patriotic Spectacular!”),
August 20th, October 8th and December 3rd (the
Band’s Holiday Concert).
The Clayton Opera house is handicapped-accessible.
People needing extra assistance
Improvisational Quilting Class at TAUNY
Quilters of all levels--including beginners--can
learn the art of improvisational piecing to create
fun, freeform quilt blocks at TAUNY. On Saturday,
May 11, from 9 a.m. to 12 noon, quilter and experienced
sewing arts instructor Alice David (www.
of improvisational piecing, quilting, and finishing/
During the class, at least one block will be
piecing is a perfect “scrap-busting” project,
fun! Participants need only basic sewing skills and
should be able to sew a straight seam.
The cost is $25 for the three-hour class ($20
for TAUNY Friends), plus an $8 materials fee. Materials
fee is waived if you bring your own fabric
backing and batting (call or email TAUNY for detailed
scrap-trading tradition.
Mom,I sound
A noun, a sweet resonance
The earth, the moon, the sun
They shout
Mom
The bearer of life, from within and without,
Mom
All beauty is in her
A woman to whom we all belong
Starting from a seed strewn in the ground
Tiny sprout lifts its head from the dark dirt
Raising its leaves tall in the sun
Passion blooming slowly at first
Then at its height of its life the blossom is full.
But alas, like any living thing, the bloom starts
to wither and it dies.
No matter how hard we try to save it.
Spring St Reading Series
The Adirondack Center for Writing and The Spring
Street Gallery is proud to host a diverse group of writers
for their bi-annual readings series! At 7:30 pm, each
Monday (and one Saturday) in May, a different writer will
host a reading at the Gallery’s space – 110 Spring Street,
Saratoga Springs, NY. From native Saratogian April Bernard
to cookbook author Suvir Saran, and Cambodian
emigrant Bunkong Tuon to graphic novelist Sabrina Jones,
the series will run the gamut of unexpected and exciting
presentations.
The first reading, on May 6th, will be hosted by April
Bernard. Bernard has authored four collections of poetry
and two novels. A winner of a Guggenheim and the coveted
Walt Whitman Award, Ms. Bernard directs the creative
writing program at Skidmore College. Miss Fuller, Ms.
Bernard’s historical novel about nineteenth-century journalist
and feminist Margaret Fuller, appeared in 2012. Her
poems and articles have been published in The New Yorker,
Agni, Ploughshares, and The New York Review of Books.
The following Monday, May 13th, renowned cookbook
author Suvir Saran will take the stage. Saran is the author
of Masala Farm, American Masala, and Indian Home Cooking.
His restaurant, Devi, was the first Indian restaurant in
the US to have earned a Michelin star. Newsweek, the New
York Times, Martha Stewart Living, and Bon Appetit, all
ranked American Masala among the top cookbooks of the
year. Saran splits his time between New York City and his
70-acre farm in Hebron, Washington County.
On May 20th, also at 7:30 pm, Bunkong Tuon will read.
Carried out of Cambodia on jungle trails on his grandmother’s
back during the rule of the Khmer Rouge, Union
College lecturer “B. K.” Tuon writes poems and literary
nonfiction about identity and ethnicity, home and belonging.
His work has appeared in The Massachusetts Review,
The Truth about the Fact: International Journal of Literary
Nonfiction, genre, Khmer Voice in Poetry, and In Our Own
Words: A Generation Defining Itself.
The final reading in the series will be held on Saturday,
May 25th. Alternative cartoonist Sabrina Jones (a two-time
presenter at Spring Street) has authored and illustrated numerous
books and comic strips that celebrate the intersection
of art, politics, and activism. Her most recent book is
a graphic version of Race to Incarcerate. Jones also wrote
and illustrated: Wobblies!: An Illustrated History of the Industrial
Workers of the World; Radical Jesus; and FDR and
the New Deal for Beginners. A frequent contributor to the
esteemed comic book series, World War 3 Illustrated, Ms.
Jones divides her time between Brooklyn and Ballston Spa.
The Spring Street reading series is underwritten by
a project grant from SPAF, or the Saratoga Program for
Arts Funding. SPAF is made possible by the New York
State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor
STOLF’S OLDIES
---STOLF
Ed Sullivan sure loved ventriloquists…well, he
loved acrobats and animal acts too, but heck, Señor
Wences was on the show 18 times over the years.
Along with Sheri Lewis, he’s another one I didn’t
appreciate back in the day…I kept waiting for him
to tell some jokes, but he’d just babble on, saying
things like “OK, Johnny, how are you feeling today,
please?” Of course, today I think his act was marvelous,
and wish I could find more clips. His specialty
was more complicated than simply not moving his
lips…it was real “voice-throwing.”
As Edgar Bergen proved, the technique of “inner
talking” isn’t everything…it’s the skill and strength
of the characterization that makes it work. Charlie
McCarthy even used to kid Edgar about moving his
lips, and that was all part of the fun. It’s the “selling”
of the dummy’s personality that makes it seem like the
voice is coming from where we know it really isn’t. I
mean, if you see 2 people at a distance, and one is
talking, you assume it’s the one moving his lips. Now
Bergen said he could fool dogs into thinking a voice
was coming from the bushes, altho he admitted most
dogs would eventually figure out it was him…and
that’s more than just not moving your lips. Remember
the ventriloquist’s wife who sued for divorce, claiming
he snored on her side of the bed? This was the key to
Wenceslao Moreno’s act.
With one hand, he was working Cecilia the Chicken…in
the other he held a telephone, from which
emanated a distorted, faraway voice. Then there was
Wences’ “hand” puppet Johnny, who sounded muffled
because he’d been “put away” under a table…
and Pablo, the head in a box, who sounded different
depending on whether the box was open or closed.
This gimmick was the result of a train wreck on the
way to Chicago in 1936…and all that was left of Pablo
was the head! Mind you, Wences was doing all these
voices at once, back and forth, at breakneck speed.
Who needed jokes?
And he didn’t have a lisp. “Wenthes” is how it’s
pronounced in the Catalan dialect of Spanish, the
“official” language of Spain. It’s a “soft C,” one followed
by an E or an I. In English, the K sound softens
to a S sound…like the words city, cent, face. Same
thing happens in Mexican Spanish. In Italian, a soft C
sounds like “ch”…and in Catalan, it’s “th”…they call
the city “Barthelona.” If he really had a lisp, like Thindy
Brady, he would have said “Wentheth,” right?
A Gottle of Geer…Sullivan also had British vent
Arthur Worsley on 12 times all told. He was considered
the vent’s vent, but his act was completely different…his
dummy Charlie Brown did all the talking,
loudly berating Worsley for one thing or another…and
loud voices are much harder to do than soft voices.
He’d rant and rave, working himself into a froth, then
deliver his signature line: “By the way, son, how is it
that when I shout, YOU spit in MY face?” It sounds
like kind of a slim gimmick, but Worsley’s routines
were endlessness creative, and his technical skill was
unmatched.
Another great British vent was Ray Alan…he
added to the difficulty by having a dummy, an aristocrat
named Lord Charles, who was perpetually drunk,
so his speech was slurred and mangled. And Lord
Charles fancied he himself a “ventricklist”…hence
the title of this column… with his own cheap little
dummy. But while Lord Charles could say “bottle of
beer”…the B sound being extremely difficult to do…
his dummy would say “gottle of geer,” because Lord
Charles wasn’t a very good ventricklist. How Alan manipulated
both his dummy and his dummy’s dummy
Ventricklism Part 2
is anybody’s guess.
Home, Home on the What?…At the other end
of the spectrum, you had Max Terhune…a competent
enough vent…he’s the one who appeared on an
episode of “I Love Lucy”…but for most of his career
he played a side-kick in B westerns, riding his horse
with his dummy Elmer Sneezeweed on his lap. To
us kids, this made perfect sense…would you give
Elmer his own horse? Another vent with a western
bent that you might remember was Shirley Dinsdale,
and her rather ugly figure Judy Splinters. She began
her career in 1940 at age 14, and won an Emmy for
Outstanding Television Personality in 1949, eventually
leaving show business to become a cardiopulmonary
therapist. But now, let’s move on to…
The Dark Side…Some of us Baby Boomer kids
were afraid of clowns. Not me so much, altho I’ll admit
to finding puppets a little creepy…I mean, it isn’t
really alive, is it? Ventriloquists actually understand
this, which is why dummies look the way they do…
to make them look too human would be unsettling
to many people. Thus the plot device of the dummycome-to-life,
usually for sinister purposes. We have
the 1929 silent film “The Great Gabbo”…who is actually
the vent, his dummy is named Otto. This idea
was used again as one segment of the 1945 horror
anthology “Dead of Night.”
In our day, one of the best was the 1964 film
“Devil Doll.” Demonic dummies were featured in 2
different episodes of “Alfred Hitchcock,” and again
in 2 episodes of “The Twilight Zone,” not counting
Telly Savalas and the Talky Tina doll. Ultimately you
have the 1978 movie “Magic” with Anthony Hopkins
and Fats…and a TV commercial that was supposedly
pulled for frightening children. And in one 1960
episode of “Peter Gunn,” the dummy really did kill the
vent. Seems when the vent lost his voice, he hired a
midget to be the dummy and do the talking for both of
them…well, you can take it from there. But I’d like to
close with another mystery…and that is…
The Mystery of Skinny Dugan…Now I had heard
Charlie McCarthy occasionally mention a friend named
Skinny Dugan. After all, Charlie didn’t pal around with
Mortimer Snerd, who was supposed to be an adult, a
rube befuddled by the Big City…altho in a series of
Dell comic books in the late 1940s, Mortimer was portrayed
as a kid…and when they needed a third character,
there was Skinny Dugan…with a massive shock
of black hair, but otherwise looking pretty normal, not
at all “skinny.”
But there actually was a real Skinny Dugan. He
was a dummy used by vent Fred Maher from 1940
until his death in 1952. His widow sold it to Detroit TV
personality Ted “Sagebrush Shorty” Lloyd, on condition
he not change the dummy’s name. The dummy is
owned today by Jeff Dunham. Apparently, Edgar Bergan
wasn’t concerned with the name being used…
perhaps he was flattered, and at any rate, it wasn’t a
big part of his act.
Trouble is, there was yet another vent with a
different Skinny Dugan. He was a Ted Mack discovery
named Ray Austin, and this Skinny was
a Frank Marshall dummy in the Jerry Mahoney/
Danny O’Day mold. Apart from a clip from 1952
on YouTube, I can find very little on Ray Austin…
but at least I can tell you this: “Skinny Dugan” is
actually old-time dice-players’ slang for a 7…so
I guess in that sense it was considered a generic
term of sorts. Will more Skinny Dugans crawl out
of the woodwork, so to speak? Wouldn’t be surprised.
Till next time, don’t take any wooden nickels…and
rock on!
his band at the Westcott Theater in Syracuse, NY on
05/22/13 with special guests, The African Showboyz
from Ghana, as part of the 2nd leg of the Worlds
Within Tour. The African Showboyz are four brothers
from the northern part of Ghana who fuse a unique
blend of West African rhythm, dance, and raw energy.
100% of the ticketing fees sold through Mickeyhart.net
will go to fund Musical Therapy Research
at UCSF. The show will feature brand new material
from the Mickey Hart Band’s new album Mysterium
Tremendum, as well as selections of Hart’s greatest
hits and Grateful Dead songs.
On Feb 5th, 2013, the Mickey Hart Band has released
a new song, “Jersey Shore,” to benefit Hurricane
Sandy relief efforts. 100% of the proceeds of
“Jersey Shore” go to Clean Ocean Action, who have
organized over 3,800 volunteers since November
2012. To download the song and and read more, go
to http://www.mickeyhart.net/jersey.
The band is currently in the studio working on
the follow up to Mysterium Tremendum. The Worlds
Within Tour has provided great opportunity for the
band to test out new material, including songs cowritten
by Hart and Robert Hunter. “We have traversed
the macro, the stars, the planets, now we
journey into the micro,” says Hart. “This band is
truly a living, breathing organism.”
The Mickey Hart Band recently released three
free live tracks from their 3/6/13 Solana Beach, CA
show including the brand new song, “The Sermon”
featuring lyrics by Robert Hunter. “The Sermon”,
along with Grateful Dead classics “Ramble On Rose”
and “Playing in the Band”, is available at http://www.
mickeyhart.net/download.
Hart commented on the progression of the band
in a recent interview with the Tahoe Daily Tribune.
“We played 100 shows last year and it really tells
when we get on stage,” said Hart. “The band is on
fire. We are ready to play and this is going to be a
great year for us.”
Hart’s latest album entitled Mysterium Tremendum,
his first in five years and follow up to the
2007 Grammy award winning Global Drum Project,
10
was released on April 10th, 2012. With Mysterium
Tremendum, Hart is pushing the boundaries of what
we know as music, creating a genre of his own. “I
have always thought of life, the world at large, as music,”
says Hart. “This work is a representation of that
notion. I have combined sonic images of the formation
of our universe with sounds drawn from musical
instruments. It’s all about the vibrations that make
up the infinite universe. In this case, they began as
light waves and these light waves are still washing
over us. Scientists at Penn State, Lawrence Berkeley
Labs, and Meyer Sound have transformed these light
waves into sound waves. These musical excursions
transport me to wonderful and strange new places
filled with rhythms for a new day. The combination
of music from the whole earth and the sounds of the
planets, the stars, the events that formed our universe
is intoxicating and points toward an awareness
of what music is, could be, and where it comes from.
“On Mysterium Tremendum, Hart joined with long
time Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter. “Hunter is
a bold visionary writer who knows where I am going
with this music,” says Hart. “ He is indispensable
to the weave of this story. The way he writes, the
imagery and mythology, are perfect for this project.
Nobody writes like Robert Hunter.”
The Mickey Hart Band consists of Grammy winning
percussionist and longtime band mate Sikiru
Adepoju, Tony Award winning vocalist Crystal Monee
Hall, singer and multi-instrumentalist Joe Bagale,
drummer Greg Schutte, guitarist Gawain Matthews,
and keyboardist/sound engineer Jonah Sharp. Jam-
Bands.com gave the band’s recent tour stop in NYC
rave reviews stating that “Mickey Hart is nothing
short of a musical genius and it shines through in everything
he does. Whether he’s working with George
Lucas, NASA, or throwing together a unique group of
musicians for a band, its apparent that Mickey isn’t
satisfied doing the same old thing...”.
Originally discovered by Grammy-winning virtuoso,
Babatunde Olatunji, the African Showboyz have
shared the stage with Stevie Wonder, Fela Kuti, Fema
Kuti, Arrested Development, and many others. Watch
GAME CONNOISSEUR
It’s time to make your own game.
---Dr. Anthony Betrus
It was a cold and rainy Sunday in mid-April. By most
measures this was the perfect board-game day. The kids
and I went through the typical options: Monopoly, Life,
Battleship, and about a dozen others. Good sure, but we’d
been there, done that. We needed something new. So we
set out to make our own game using what we had around
the house. This wasn’t our first homemade game. Last
year we took a large piece of scrap cardboard and cutouts
from the recycle bin to make RainbowHeartLand,
a Candyland meets Chutes and Ladders meets HeroClix
mash-up with lots of hearts, lots of superheroes, and lots
of pink. It’s been a big hit in the house, and often is their
first choice to play. In fact we happen to have quite an
extensive collection of HeroClix mini-figures, including
Wonder Woman, Batman, Superman, Green Lantern,
Lex Luthor, Doomsday, Sinestro, and a couple hundred
more (if you are interested, you can find these at a pretty
reasonable price in lots on eBay). So we figured we could
reuse the figures in the new game, and that became the
starting point.
To back up a bit, the week before I had purchased
Super Munchkin (I highly recommend any of the various
Munchkin games) and played it with some friends. We
had a great time, and while the kids are getting a bit older,
they weren’t quite ready for something this complicated,
not to mention that the content is a bit PG-13ish. So I
figured we could make something that captured some of
the best qualities of Munchkin, add in the HeroClix figures,
integrate RainbowHeartLand, and above all give us
something to do on this rainy Sunday.
The closest thing I can equate game making to would
be cooking. And while you might not fancy yourself a
gourmet chef, everybody can “cook,” and everybody can
make a game. For me, when it comes to games, like a
good chef I first take care of the big picture, and then get
great pleasure in the little touches and small details. For
those of you just starting out, you may be a bit fearful
of simply burning the toast (so-to-speak), so I suggest
focusing on the big picture. The most important thing is
to involve your children (or friends) in making the game.
If they make it, they own it. For example, I knew that in
the game we would need “boots of speed,” so I let them
draw the boots on the cards. I knew we would need “treasure
cards,” and again they made these cards. In fact
they made each of the seventy-two cards (18 each in four
categories ranging from easy to extremely hard). I made
the base set of rules, knowing that after the first couple of
playthroughs there would need to be some tweaks (there
always are). The best advice I can give you for making
rules is to keep it simple and elegant, and sometimes it
is better for one person to come up with the base set
of rules, and others to offer advice (too many cooks can
spoil the soup). And focus on your strengths. If you have
an artistic flair, maybe you could have an impromptu
art lesson. Maybe the game is about drawing at its core
(think Pictionary).
In the end you really can’t go wrong. You’ll spend
some quality time with the people you care about, make
something together that you’ll come back to again and
again. My kids love the game, and ask to play it regularly.
From their point of view it doesn’t matter if its chocolate
chip cookies, chicken and biscuits, or a good burger from
the grill, if they have a hand in making it, it will taste all
the better.
APRIL
EVENTS
Sometimes, a much-loved and highly successful
band needs to shake things up a bit to keep things
fresh and interesting for their fans and for themselves,
all the while retaining the signature sonic
hallmarks that have defined their sound.
For their upcoming sixth album, Massachusetts
metal pioneers Killswitch Engage reunited with original
singer Jesse Leach, whose vocals and lyrics on
2002’s landmark Alive or Just Breathing are fan-favorite
qualities and part of what helped put KsE on
the map as one of the most important bands of the
‘00s metal revival. Poll KsE fans and ask which album
they like best and Alive or Just Breathing is usually
right at the top of the list.
Call it coming full circle, returning to their roots
or coming home again. Whatever the case and no
matter what you choose to label it, Leach’s return to
the fold is welcomed and anticipated by all involved,
from the band members themselves to the fans.
Leach is a fitting piece of the KsE puzzle. KsE enjoyed
a decade of success with Leach’s replacement
Howard Jones, who has moved on amicably.
“This change is very exciting,” the band said
upon announcing Leach’s triumphant return. “We
know you’re going to love it. This is truly a new era in
KsE history and it is ready to shred your face off. So,
please help us in welcoming Jesse back into the KsE
family; he is a rare and great talent, a fact that older
KsE fans have known for years. Here is to a killer
new record and a bright future. The five of us cannot
wait to write this record and play shows together and
bring that feeling to our fans. It’s been far too long.”
KsE burst onto the scene with the genre-defining
Alive or Just Breathing, notching a Grammy nomination
in 2005 for the title track from 2004’s goldcertified
The End of Heartache and following up that
landmark album with the Gold-selling As Daylight
Dies and an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live along
with gracing the covers of countless metal and rock
magazines around the world.
Through the ‘00s, KsE adopted a versatile, nonstop
touring schedule. The band’s road history includes
two treks on Ozzfest, stints on Warped Tour
and Taste of Chaos, as they have that rare ability to
straddle the line between the metal and alternative
scenes by touring with Slayer and Mastodon as easily
as My Chemical Romance and Underoath
The band’s DVD Set This World Ablaze also enjoyed
Gold-selling status, proving that KsE have the
metallic Midas touch.
However, KsE have never coasted on the wave
of prior successes, which saw them become one
of the premier, most successful bands to emerge
from the so-called New Wave of American metal.
With Leach back at the vocal helm and behind the
mic and a renewed sense of what they want to accomplish,
what once was is brand new again and
2012 (and beyond) looks to be another exciting
year (and decade) for Killswitch Engage.
Ithaca, NY – The Ithaca Festival is proud to announce
the inaugural, “Heart of the Finger Lakes:
Tasting & Tapas Showcase” welcoming local food
and beverage producers to present tastes of signature
dishes and products Thursday evening May
30th on the streets of downtown Ithaca. The same
evening, as the food fest winds down, reggae
legends Toots & the Maytals return to The State
Theatre on their 50th anniversary tour… a co-presentation
of Dan Smalls Presents and the festival.
The “Heart of the Finger Lakes: Tasting &
Tapas Showcase” welcomes food producers to
create a signature appetizer or tapas sized dish
crafted from locally grown products. Wineries,
breweries, cider makers and other beverage producers
are asked to bring samples of a selection of
their products. Other food producers like bakers,
chocolatiers and dairies are welcomed to apply as
well. Additionally, farm advocacy groups, and other
organizations promoting local food are invited
to table at the event.
Local food producers, artists and musicians,
community residents, and out of town guests will
join together in celebration of the region’s unique
features highlighting much of what makes Tompkins
County exceptional. Musical performances
will take place as a community art project is
launched. To apply as a food or beverage producer,
advocacy group, or learn more visit www.
ithacafestival.org. Contact Emma Hewitt, Program
Director, emma@ithacafestival.org for additional
information.
The night will cap off with a concert by reggae
greats Toots & The Maytals, presented in
collaboration with Dan Smalls Presents and the
State Theatre. Local favorites the Blind Spots, who
recently sold out the Haunt in advance, will open.
The concert brings together three of Ithaca’s most
reliable sources for live entertainment, united to
highlight the city’s most beautiful venue while
bringing beloved artists to our community. All
three organizations are excited about this new and
hopefully yearly venture.
It has been 50 years since the Maytal’s debut
album “Never Grow Old” was released. Since then,
the group, lead by charismatic frontman Toots
Hibbert, has produced countless hits including
“Pressure Drop,” “Reggae Got Soul, “ “Sweet and
Dandy,” “Monkey Man” and “Time Tough.” Credited
with singlehandedly naming an entire musical
genre with 1968 hit “Do the Reggay”, Toots
& the Maytals stands as one of Jamaica’s most
influential groups. Their legendary ska and rocksteady
style features soulful three-part harmonies,
continuing to garner them fans across the globe.
Tickets will cost $26.50 and 29.50 with a very
limited amount of gold circle seating available for
$36.50 and will go on sale Friday, March 15th.
