SLC Arts Council AnnouncesNew Executive DirectorThe Board of Directors of the St. LawrenceCounty Arts Council has completed an extensivesearch and is pleased to announce that RebekahWilkins-Pepiton has been selected to fill the positionof Executive Director.Ms. Wilkins-Pepiton is a visual artist and artseducator living and working in Canton, New York.She holds an MEd in Art Education from the Universityof Idaho, and completed her BA in photographyat Wayland Baptist University. Beka movedto the North Country during the summer of 2012after serving with the U.S. Peace Corps and livingin Southwest China for two years. Before movingto China, Beka taught high school visual artin Colorado where she developed Pagosa Springs’Fine Arts Magnet Academy. She also worked asPublic Relations & Marketing Director for SquareTop Repertory Theatre, based in the Four CornersRegion.As an artist, Ms. Wilkins-Pepiton works in avariety of mediums: printmaking, photography,mixed media, and graphic design. Her woodcutprints will be a part of The Great BIG Smalls VIIIat Ottawa’s Cube gallery in December 2012. Herwork has been shown in galleries throughout theU.S. Beka’s photography and mixed media workshave appeared in journals and anthologies such asthe Rio Grande Review and Ruminate <strong>Magazine</strong>,as well as on a variety of book jackets. Her bookBroken Cycles, a conversation between her photographyand the poetry of Damon Falke, was publishedby Shechem Press in 2007. She also producedthe relief prints for Shechem Press’ 2008and 2012 Artist Broadsides alongside poems byJoshua Mehigan, Saara Raappana, Kevin Meaux,and Damon Falke. STOLF’S OLDIES---STOLFRemember “quickies” from Rowan and Martin’sLaugh-In? Got some this month, a potpourri ofstrange and wondrous sidelights on Baby Boomerpop culture…The Doors’ bass-player…If you loved their records,and especially if you were forming your ownrock group, you may have noticed that their lineupwasn’t traditional: nobody played bass guitar. Keyboardplayer Ray Manzarek doubled up…playing anorgan with his right hand, and the bass line with hisleft, using a small keyboard instrument from Fendercalled a Rhodes piano bass. It had 19 white keys and13 black, covering 2 and a half octaves. And apartfrom Jim Morrison, these guys were stellar musicians…forexample, “Light My Fire” started out as afolk song, and was converted into what was almosta boss nova beat…why?…because musically theythought it sounded cool…and right they were.Mad magazine…originally, in 1952, it was a comicbook called “Tales Calculated to Drive You Mad.”The stories were parodies of other comics, movies,and TV shows…stuff like “Superduperman,” “LittleOrphan Melvin,” and “Howdy Doodit.” In 1955, after23 comic book issues, it was converted to the magazineformat we all know and love. And it’s still around,now published 6 times a year, just as it was originally,before going monthly in 1954…except now it costs$5.99…cheap!Donkey Kong…why “donkey”? What’s that gotto do with a gorilla? In 1981, Nintendo was tryingto license the Popeye characters for a video game.When that deal fell through, they assigned ShigeruMiyamoto the task of coming up with original characters.Donkey Kong was his version of Bluto…andhe believed that “donkey” in English meant “stupid,”so that Donkey Kong would be seen as “the stupidape.” Wrong…but delightfully so, and the goofy namestuck…even to the extent of becoming a breakfast cereal,remember?Why are there 2 teams in the minor leagueAmerican Hockey League with the same nickname…theNorfolk Admirals and the Milwaukee Admirals?Norfolk came first, at least as an AHL member,as an expansion team in 2000. The Milwaukeeteam dates from 1970, first as an amateur team, thena member of the U.S. Hockey League. They joined theInternational Hockey League in 1977, then the AmericanHockey League when the IHL folded in 2001. Andit was simply decided that, given each team had a legitimateclaim to the nickname, neither would have tochange.Another example of double nicknames wouldbe the Canadian Football League with the OttawaRough Riders (which folded in 1996)…the “EasternRiders”…and the Saskatchewan Roughriders or“Western Riders.” The reason is: before a mergerin 1958, the Eastern and Western divisions of theCFL were actually 2 separate leagues, that didn’tplay each other except for the Grey Cup. Also, theHamilton Tiger-cats resulted from a merger of 2older teams, the Hamilton Tigers and the HamiltonWildcats.Salem, Massachusetts…the town where I wasborn…was the 8th most populous city in the US in1790, with close to 8,000 people. Bear in mind, #1New York City had just 33 thousand…and #3 Bostona mere 18 thousand. (Who was #2? If you said Philadelphia,you get the gold star.) Salem didn’t fall out ofthe top 10 until the 1830 census. And not for nothing,but in 1950, Ogdensburg had more people than Anaheim,California…16,166 versus 14,556. In the nextdecade of course, Anaheim’s population would growto over 100,000…thank you, Mr. Disney.And one thing that makes all Salemites winceis when they hear that witches were burned there.Burning was a medieval form of execution in Europe.Instead, 19 accused “witches,” women and men both,8Quickies...were hung during the Witchcraft Hysteria in 1692. Andone man died while being tortured, crushed by heavystones…”pressed to death” as they recorded at thetime.One of my favorite movie bloopers….in the DirtyHarry movie “Sudden Impact,” Clint Eastwood has apet bulldog. In some scenes it is clearly a male, in others,a female. A bulldog doesn’t have a lot of hair, yousee. If it had been a long-haired dog, well...oh, nevermind…why am I explaining this to you? Sheesh.1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9…10!…That psychedelicnumber counting animation on the early episodes of“Sesame Street” was voiced by none other than GraceSlick, lead singer of the Jefferson Airplane.But did you know that Slick wasn’t the group’soriginal singer of the group? That was Signe Anderson.She was with them for a year, and sang on theirfirst LP “The Jefferson Airplane Arrives” from 1966.She left the group to have a baby, and was replaced byGrace Slick, from the group the Great Society. “Somebodyto Love” and “White Rabbit” were songs theGreat Society performed, and of course became hitswhen recorded by the Jefferson Airplane.Likewise Blood, Sweat and Tears…Al Kooperwas the lead singer on their first LP, subsequentlyreplaced by British-born Canadian David Clayton-Thomas. On their Greatest Hits collection, you canhear Kooper singing on “I Can’t Quit Her.” Alex Chiltonof the Boxtops and Steven Stills were consideredas replacements before Judy Collins recommendedClayton-Thomas. And the whole idea of a jazz-rockgroup with a prominent horn section? It came fromtheir admiration of the Buckinghams’ pop sound…just jazzier.Turkey and Russia…geography buffs recognizethese as the 2 countries that are part of both Europeand Asia…but what country is in both Europe and Africa?That would be Spain. It claims as its sovereignterritory 2 ports on the northern coast of Morocco…Ceuta and Melilla. They are not considered colonies,but an integral part of the Spanish state….and havebeen since the 1500s, long before Morocco gainedindependence from France. Morocco doesn’t see itthat way, but there you go. Such geographical odditiesare known as “enclaves” and there are a lot more ofthem around the world than you’d think…um, whichcountry am I in again?Come to think of it…while it’s not quite the samething, there are 3 localities in the US that you cannotget to by land without first passing through Canada…they are “internationally discontiguous” as you mightsay. Can you find them? Rainy day fun for the wholefamily.Who is Ponsonby Britt? Watch an episodeof “Rocky and Bullwinkle,” “Hoppity Hooper,” or“George of the Jungle,” and you’ll see his name in thecredits as Executive Producer. Except there was nosuch person…it was just an inside joke by Jay Wardand his crew.Who or what is Bibendum…nicknamed Bib? Heis the tubular Michelin man, mascot of the tire companysince 1894. His name comes from a quote from theancient Roman poet Horace: “Nunc est bibendum”…meaning “Now is the time to drink.” It refers to the Michelintire’s ability to perform in rainy weather, “drinking”the water from the road.Buddy Ebsen was Walt Disney’s original choiceto play Davy Crockett…until he saw Fess Parker, andBuddy was denoted to second banana George Russell.And Buddy was also slated to be the Scarecrowin “The Wizard of Oz”…replaced by Ray Bolger whenhe was found to be allergic to the aluminum makeup.Back in Kansas, the Scarecrow was a farm-handnamed Hunk…and oddly enough Ebsen would eventuallyplay a Hunk…Hunking “Hunk” Marriner, sidekickon the 1958 TV series “Northwest Passage”…ithad been Walter Brennan in the movie. BTW, Hunkingis a British surname. Till next time, rocking on!<strong>Fourth</strong> <strong>Coast</strong> <strong>Entertainment</strong> <strong>Magazine</strong> / <strong>January</strong> 2013The Great Chernesky RocksThe Java Barn At SLUByJohn BerbrichDecember 6th, 2012—After nearly eightmonths away, The Great Chernesky galloped backinto Canton on this Thursday night, up from theprison town of Auburn, New York, ready to performto a staunch coterie of die-hard Cherneskyfans who arrived in full force, anxious to singalong to their favorite songs (“American Wolf” and“We Ain’t Wrong”) and urge the acoustic-guitarslingingharmonica-honking singer to a more frenziedperformance. Chernesky was accompaniedby his usual accomplice, art-school dropout PhillyPhillips, who assisted throughout the spectacle bywaving American flags and dancing with variousfemale members of the audience.It was that kind of show. Chernesky played allof his fans’ favorites, like “No Apologies,” “AmericanWolf,” “Women and Whiskey,” and more,including a couple of new songs, “Ghost Town”and something that I think was titled “The GreatOne,” an obvious reference to the singer himself.As I’ve mentioned before, Chernesky plays thehardest-strumming acoustic guitar I’ve ever seenor heard, obliging him to retune after every song.While he twisted the pegs, Philly came out andtold some pretty awful jokes. Dressed in coonskincap, suspenders, jeans, and a blue and goldGreat Chernesky T-shirt, The Great One looked likea wanderer from another land. Twice he leaped offthe stage over the wooden crowd barriers, landingin the audience, scrambling like a madman,singing and strumming. For an odd sort of climax,Chernesky, while singing and playing guitar,reached down inside his jeans and somehow—I’mnot quite sure how he managed this—ripped offhis underwear—the kind of one-piece top-andbottomunderwear that guys wore in 1905—andtossed it out into the crowd, where it was caughtby a vigorously dancing blonde. I thought shemight auction it off to the assembled faithful asan incomparable relic, but actually she returnedthe light-blue undergarment to its rightful ownerdirectly after the show.I was very impressed with the Java Barn. It’spainted all sorts of outrageous colors, and caneasily hold 60 or more dancing, screaming fans.The stage is ample, the sound system first-rate,and the dazzling display of colored lights reallyhelps to set the mood. He didn’t go away in2011-12, but he didn’t winany championships, either.Tony Stewart won his thirdchampionship -- and first insix years -- in 2011, and hisrazor-sharp duel with CarlEdwards provided the 10-race Chase with its alltimeclassic, but Stewart was a throwback, andas many were quick to point out, over seven seasons,the sport had only two champions, Johnson(2006-07-08-09-10) and Stewart (2005, ‘11).In a span of three years, NASCAR has producedan unprecedented achievement -- Johnson’s fifthstraight title -- a memorable championship by oneof the sport’s more popular stars (Stewart), andthe emergence of a new and unexpected superstar.Next, all must adjust to changes because a newcar -- Generation 6, or G6 -- will debut, providingfans with three makes-- Chevy, Ford and Toyota --that are more distinct thanthe largely generic modelsused for most of six seasons.Another change, of course,is the departure of Dodge,which bowed out in spite ofwinning a championship in its final year.Keselowski and Penske Racing will switch to Fordnext season. Perhaps, given that all the cars arechanging, it’s a good time.
