Celebrity Speaker
Welcome
from Joanna & Jean
Chris Barrie
To his legion of fans across the world, Chris is best known as Rimmer - the Red
Dwarf character who made love only once in his life. To others he is Hilary, Angelina
Jolie's butler in Tomb Raider; but to many he will forever be remembered as Gordon
Brittas, the most irritating manager in the history of the British leisure centre industry.
Chris has since added more strings to his bow as presenter of Massive Engines,
exploring almost every invention in mechanised transport from trains to airships.
As the proud owner of several classic cars, motorcycles and trucks, it played
perfectly to one of his biggest obsessions.
After moving to London from his native Northern Ireland, Chris started out in the
comedy clubs as an impressionist. It wasn't long before he was picked up by the
producers of Spitting Image, and he went on to provide the voices for a stream of
characters from HRH Prince Charles to Paul Daniels.
Tonight once again, we celebrate the nuclear
stars of the future at what is our third annual UK
Nuclear Skills Awards Evening in Manchester,
organised by the National Skills Academy for
Nuclear and Cogent Sector Skills Council.
We are absolutely delighted to welcome over
300 Nuclear employers, training providers and
key stakeholders to celebrate the success and
high achievement of the learners nominated for
awards.
Every year we are so impressed by all the
entrants’ willingness to learn and their passion
for their chosen trade. Importantly this evening
also both highlights the achievements of all the
learners, as well as the tremendous work of
many people in the Nuclear sector to help to
raise the skills levels within their own
organisations, and for the sector itself.
As usual all the categories have been heavily
contested and the judges had a very hard job.
All the winners and finalists have gone the extra
mile for themselves and their organisations.
We hope that you have an enjoyable evening
with us celebrating the exceptional quality of
vocational learners, who are committed to long
careers in our industry.
These people are the guarantee that we have the
highly skilled workforce we need for the future.
They are supporting the UK’s transition to a low
carbon economy and to a sustainable future for all.
Joanna Woolf,
CEO, Cogent SSC
Jean Llewellyn,
CEO National Skills
Academy for Nuclear.
For live audiences, Chris performs after dinner, as a speaker or in cabaret. He also
hosts awards and lightens up conferences. It's not unknown for him to toss the
audience a curved ball, particularly in relation to those all-important health & safety
issues: "What would you do if faced by a tiger rampaging through your office?"
Finally thanks must go to all our partners for their continued contribution to
setting standards in the industry through close consultation with Cogent
and for their ongoing commitment to the Skills Academy’s vision to ensure
the development of a highly skilled nuclear workforce.
Nuclear Job Contexts set the benchmark
Ben Avaient
Employer: Doosan Babcock
Nuclear Job Contexts continue
to provide an important national
framework for competences, training
industry.
They are families of nuclear job
roles developed by Cogent, with
industry inputs. The Job Contexts are
an aspirational standard organised
around four skills areas:
• Technical Competence
• Compliance
• Business Improvement
• Functional and Behavioural
Each job role within a Job Context sets
Job Contexts developed so far are:
• Nuclear Decommissioning
• Radiation Protection
• Nuclear Process Operations
• Nuclear Maintenance
“we refer to Cogent Job Contexts to
provide a skills benchmark for job roles
across our Working with the Nuclear
Employers Steering Group Cogent
(NESG) Cogent continues to ensure its
skills strategy for the nuclear industry
is focused on the development of a
highly skilled workforce to undertake
decommissioning, processing and new
build activities.”
growth in the nuclear industry, a
priority sector of the economy. Central
to the strategy is the continued
direction from the NESG, which will
continue to work in partnership
with the National Skills Academy for
Nuclear to ensure the very highest
Ben has completed his apprenticeship in Welding. His
employer describes Ben as a focal figure within the
apprentice and craftsman faction at Hinkley Point B. His
employer also highlighted Ben’s dynamic approach
towards safety and quality in the workplace, his
questioning attitude making Ben, even though an
apprentice, an integral part of the Hinkley Point B team.
provide a route to securing skills across
each of these competences.
This strategy is focused on providing
the high level direction on skills for
Kirk Back
Employer: EDF Energy, Hinkley Point B
EDF Energy is the UK’s largest producer of electricity and the largest generator of
low-carbon electricity in Britain. It is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the EDF Group,
one of Europe's largest energy groups.
We produce around one-fifth of the nation's electricity from our nuclear, coal and
gas power stations, as well as combined heat and power plants and wind farms.
The Company provides technical and personal development training at all levels
of the organisation. Our ‘Advanced Apprenticeship’ programme is a 4- year
programme, the first two years being residential at HMS Sultan utilising the VT
Flagship (Babcock) as our provider, who in 2010 were graded 1 (outstanding) by
OFSTED for overall effectiveness of provision.
Kirk has completed his apprenticeship in Control &
Instrumentation Maintenance. In addition to his own
training needs and requirements, Kirk has also been
supporting the training needs of the entire station
by volunteering himself to be a member of the
Curriculum Review Committee, where he has brought
a valuable contribution from the apprentice / new
starter's viewpoint.
The aim of the apprentice programme is to equip technicians with the technical
skills needed to support the maintenance requirements of a nuclear power plant.
We combine this with a comprehensive life skills programme to aid personal
growth and development.
Nuclear National
Apprentice of the Year
Apprenticeships are seen as one of the key
avenues for replenishing and building skills
for the nuclear sector.
All of the regional winners this evening have
been assessed by an independent panel
from each of the areas. Selecting who
should be announced as the UK Nuclear
Apprentice of the Year was a very hard
task. The standard of applications this year
has been extremely high, making the
judging of candidates very difficult. The
Regional winners all demonstrated that
they brought that little bit extra to their
work, they all proved...
To be announced
■ Commitment in their own personal development and
progression through learning
■ Outstanding contributions where they have exceeded
expectations
■ Examples of achievement
■ Potential for a developing career in the nuclear sector
■ Inspirational qualities
The UK Panel recognised, and was extremely encouraged by the level
of commitment and dedication shown by the regional apprentice
winners. The quality of the work they are performing is a credit to the
individuals, their supervisors, mentors and managers and the Training
Providers who have all helped these individual to realise their potential
and achieve the skills and competence to succeed.
Tonight’s winner is a truly exceptional individual who has
demonstrated that they have the skills to succeed, and that they
have the drive and enthusiasm to be an inspiration to existing and
new apprentices.
Nuclear
Bursary Student of the Year
Outstanding
Leadership in Skills
Paul Hughes
Pat Kieran
In addition to working full time in
the nuclear decommissioning sector,
Paul has been studying two Master
of Science (MSc) degrees for the
last 14 months. His employer says
that he is a great ambassador for
undertaking study and translating it
into the work place, his enthusiasm
and willingness to look further, wider,
deeper should be championed,
coupled with him being an excellent role model and
ambassador for the nuclear industry as a whole.
Paul has been a great advocate for the Bursary Award
scheme and has actively promoted the scheme through
supporting the Skills Academy’s questionnaires, by word
of mouth, social networking sites and by recognition of
the bursary’s help in assignments. Indeed, one of Paul’s
discussions on Social Networking Site Linkedin led to the
Technical Director of an environmental consulting company
taking an interest in systems approaches and then signing
up to the module Paul is studying.
Paul says that the bursary has been critical to his studies
– “without it I would not have been able to undertake the
course I have chosen to do. In addition to the much
appreciated financial aid, the emotional support of having
the backing of the Skills Academy gives me confidence in
not only my own abilities and ambitions, but also the
content of my studies also.”
I've been in Caithness since the mid
1970s. I came to Dounreay, from
Liverpool, my home town, as an
Electrical Engineering student in
1976, went home, finished my
degree and came back in 1978 to
stay. I came for the job and the surf,
which now ranks alongside Sunset
Beach but back then I had it to
myself a lot of the time.
In 1980, Annie and I were married, we've had four great
kids and in my spare time I sing in a Gaelic Choir and run
the local branch of the British Science Association. This
latter role complements my Science Engagement
activities, which started in 1990 with a Young Engineers'
Club at Thurso College, where I lectured for 20 years.
I returned to Dounreay in 2002 and DSRL have been
forward-thinking enough to indulge me and allow me to
help build up a network of around 120 registered STEM
ambassadors in the local area from DSRL and other local
Science and Engineering firms.
I was awarded an MBE for Services to Science in the
2010 New Years' Honours as a result of this work over the
years and I am extremely grateful for this latest award,
coming as it does from a panel of my peers in the nuclear
industry. It means a lot to me.
