Celebrity Speaker Welcome from Joanna & Jean Chris Barrie To his legion of fans across the world, Chris is best known as Rimmer - the Red Dwarf character who made love only once in his life. To others he is Hilary, Angelina Jolie's butler in Tomb Raider; but to many he will forever be remembered as Gordon Brittas, the most irritating manager in the history of the British leisure centre industry. Chris has since added more strings to his bow as presenter of Massive Engines, exploring almost every invention in mechanised transport from trains to airships. As the proud owner of several classic cars, motorcycles and trucks, it played perfectly to one of his biggest obsessions. After moving to London from his native Northern Ireland, Chris started out in the comedy clubs as an impressionist. It wasn't long before he was picked up by the producers of Spitting Image, and he went on to provide the voices for a stream of characters from HRH Prince Charles to Paul Daniels. Tonight once again, we celebrate the nuclear stars of the future at what is our third annual UK Nuclear Skills Awards Evening in Manchester, organised by the National Skills Academy for Nuclear and Cogent Sector Skills Council. We are absolutely delighted to welcome over 300 Nuclear employers, training providers and key stakeholders to celebrate the success and high achievement of the learners nominated for awards. Every year we are so impressed by all the entrants’ willingness to learn and their passion for their chosen trade. Importantly this evening also both highlights the achievements of all the learners, as well as the tremendous work of many people in the Nuclear sector to help to raise the skills levels within their own organisations, and for the sector itself. As usual all the categories have been heavily contested and the judges had a very hard job. All the winners and finalists have gone the extra mile for themselves and their organisations. We hope that you have an enjoyable evening with us celebrating the exceptional quality of vocational learners, who are committed to long careers in our industry. These people are the guarantee that we have the highly skilled workforce we need for the future. They are supporting the UK’s transition to a low carbon economy and to a sustainable future for all. He also hosts awards and lightens up conferences. It's not unknown for him to toss the audience a curved ball, particularly in relation to those all-important health & safety issues: "What would you do if faced by a tiger rampaging through your office?"
