Gary Weir<br />
Employer: Dounreay Site Restoration Limited<br />
Gary completed his HND in Electrical Engineering and<br />
now works as an Electrical craftsman carrying out various<br />
electrical maintenance activities.<br />
Gary has worked in a variety of locations and off site<br />
placements where his work has always been to a very<br />
high standard. He decided at an early stage that he<br />
wanted to achieve more than his HNC and attended<br />
additional evening classes to achieve additional units<br />
towards his HND.<br />

Gary is also a STEM ambassador and has attended various STEM projects throughout the<br />
area showing school children what can be achieved through the modern apprentice route<br />
by meeting with pupils in an open question and answer session<br />

Foundation Degree Student of the Year<br />
Glen Caldock<br />
Employer: Sellafield Ltd<br />
Glen completed the Foundation Degree in Nuclear Related<br />
Technology, and currently works as a Technical Specialist<br />
working within the Waste Vitrification Plant at Sellafield.<br />
His employer says that Glen’s academic work has been<br />
of a consistently high standard and he has taken on and<br />
progressed challenging technical tasks on the Sellafield<br />
Site. His ability to plan and execute complex technical<br />
tasks has exceeded all prior expectations of Foundation<br />
degree students.<br />
Glen has worked with his peers to raise the profile of<br />
Foundation Degrees within the local community, which has resulted in 200 applicants <strong>for</strong><br />
the 15 places on the course each year. He has also personally encouraged his friends to<br />
apply <strong>for</strong> the course.<br />
