The Arts Club Theatre Company relies on your philanthropic support to ensure the strength and vitality of the company. As a non-profit
ARTISTIC MANAGING DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE
MANY AVENUES
The musical comedy Avenue Q takes place in New York on a street that doesn’t
exist, but it represents many avenues that some of us have journeyed; a place
where the musical theatre form meets a slightly skeptic comedic mind. Peter
Jorgensen is the ideal director of this show, with his background and his
encyclopedic knowledge of musical theatre. Peter formed his own company
dedicated to producing musicals (Patrick Street Productions), and founded
and continues to run our Music Theatre Intensive each summer for three
weeks. This summer, the sessions are from July 29 to August 16. It marks the 12 th year that the Arts
Club has presented this program for 14 teenagers keen on learning more about what it takes to be
a music theatre performer: the requirements of singing, movement, and acting. Kayla Dunbar, one
of the graduates of MTI, is in this production. Kayla and others have been seen not only in our own
musicals, but elsewhere in the province, as well as at the Stratford Festival and on Broadway (Kaylee
Harwood). But even after the rigorous three-week course, those who wish to continue the pursuit
of a professional career must continue to train and improve their craft, not to mention audition —
a constant in the life of any performer. In fact, Stephanie Hargreaves, the Arts Club’s Artist Liaison,
is currently arranging auditions for the musicals we are presenting as part of our 50 th Season: Mary
Poppins, Monty Python’s Spamalot, and Red Rock Diner.
This past season at the Granville Island Stage has been one of our most successful, opening with
Master Class, starring the incomparable Gina Chiarelli; continuing with the revival of It’s a Wonderful
Life, one of our most popular seasonal shows; followed by the gang from Atomic Vaudeville with Ride
the Cyclone; and the premiere of M.A.C. Farrant’s adaptation of her memoir My Turquoise Years.
Thank you for being part of our productions this season.
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE
FORTY NINE AND GOING STRONG
Welcome to the final production of our 49 th Season. I think the joy and
irreverence of Avenue Q is a great way to end what has been a wonderful season
of inspiring, entertaining, and thought provoking works on all three of our
stages. We are so proud of the immense talent that was a part of every
production, as evidenced by the 35 Jessie Award nominations. The Jessie Award
celebration is a wonderful event that brings Vancouver’s immensely talented
theatre community to the forefront, and it is always a great reminder of the
diversity of the artistry on all of our stages throughout the city.
I want to take a moment and thank our subscribers and contributors. This season we experienced
incredible growth in numbers and deepened engagement. Our super subscriber program grew once
again, and over the year we had some fun and engaging activities that drew our audiences even
closer to the Arts Club.
Looking ahead to our 50 th anniversary season, we are so excited about our plans and new community
partnerships with institutions such as Emily Carr University of Art and Design and Simon Fraser
University, as well as the Vancouver Public Library and Parks Board. You will be able to read all about
our exciting plans on our soon-to-be-launched, dedicated website.
If our subscription renewals and record number of new subscribers are any indication, our 50 th will
be a banner year in every way. I hope that if you are not yet a subscriber you will consider joining us—
you won’t want to miss a moment.
ABOUT AVENUE Q
Originally conceived as a television series, Avenue Q’s “autobiographical and biographical” comingof-age
parable was developed as a stage production at the 2002 National Music Theatre Conference
at the Eugene O’Neill Theater Center in Waterford, Connecticut. It opened Off-Broadway in March
2003, co-produced by The New Group and the Vineyard Theater. After extending its run four times,
the show transferred to Broadway in July 2003 where it won three Tony Awards, including Best
Musical, won the 2003 Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding New Musical, and received a nomination
for the 2003 Outer Critics Circle Outstanding Off-Broadway Musical award. This success spawned
Las Vegas and West End productions, two national tours, and a variety of international productions.
With 2,534 performances, Avenue Q ranks 23rd on the list of longest running shows in Broadway
history. The show ended its Broadway run on September 13, 2009, and then reopened Off-Broadway
at New World Stages in October 2009.
ABOUT THE CREATORS
ROBERT LOPEZ (Music and Lyrics, Original Concept, Animation Design) won the 2004 Tony Award for
Best Score for Avenue Q, which has been produced in New York, Vegas, London, Stockholm and
Helsinki and on tour! His musical version of Finding Nemo, co-written with wife Kristen Anderson-
Lopez, is currently playing at Walt Disney World. In 2007, he co-wrote songs for a musical episode
of NBC’s television show Scrubs. He and his brother Billy Lopez have written music for Nick Jr’s The
Wonder Pets! and Disney’s Johnny and the Sprites. He is a Yale graduate, 1997 (B.A. in English!).
JEFF MARX (Music and Lyrics, Original Concept) wants to thank the BMI Lehman Engel Musical
Theatre Workshop, which completely changed his life. He joined the free class as a young lawyer,
looking for clients, and ended up leaving law and becoming a songwriter. He met Bobby there, and
they brought almost every song they ever wrote together into the workshop for feedback and critique.
He’s forever in debt to the BMI teachers and classmates and everyone involved with Avenue Q who
has helped turn this fun and dirty little musical romp into such an amazing group achievement.
Thank you!
JEFF WHITTY (Book) won the 2004 Tony Award for Best Book of a Musical for Avenue Q. Plays include
The Further Adventures of
Hedda Gabler, The Hiding
Place, The Plank Project,
Suicide Weather, and Balls.
Theatres presenting his
work include the Atlantic
Theater Company, Oregon
Shakespeare Festival,
South Coast Repertory,
and the Eugene O’Neill
Theater Center. Upcoming:
Tales of the City: The
Musical with music by Jake
Shears and John Garden of
the pop group Scissor
Sisters, as well as Bring It
DIRECTOR’S NOTE
Purpose...
What the hell is my purpose? In writing this
note, I mean...
To educate: The incredible intelligence of Avenue
Q is reflected in how it reaches back through a
century of musical comedy traditions, then both
honours and distorts those very traditions with
irreverence and shameless glee.
To enlighten: Q’s conception was as a sort of
Sesame Street for young adults. Its creators
wanted to explore the kind of life lessons that
don’t get taught in school. It’s this simple
childlike take on a grown up world, and the fine,
fine line between reality and pretend, that gives
Q its beautiful, furry heart.
To enrich: Avenue Q was this edgy, unassuming
Off-Broadway musical that surprised everyone
by transferring to Broadway and beating out
Wicked at the Tony Awards for Best Book (that’s
the script), Best Score (that’s the music and
lyrics), and Best Production. Q proves in the
best way possible that artistic and commercial
success are not mutually exclusive.
To entertain: I can now add muppet-porn to my
resume!
Well the purpose of this note may be irrelevant.
The point is: for these next two hours—you’re
here. Then you’ll head back out into the real
world. So for now, sit back, relax, and enjoy.
A KINKY COMEDY
Young actress Vanda wants to land the lead in
Venus in Fur, a new play based on the infamous
novel that inspired the term “masochism.”
During her charged audition for Thomas, the
demanding writer-director, the role-playing
turns into an erotically charged game, shifting
the power dynamics and blurring the line
between fantasy and reality. Quick-witted and
seductive, this acclaimed comedy was the hit of
ARTS CLUB THEATRE COMPANY STAFF
Founded in 1964, the Arts Club Theatre Company first held performances at the downtown Seymour Stage. When the redevelopment
of Vancouver’s False Creek area began in the late 1970s, the company was given the opportunity to build a theatre on
Granville Island. By the time the Arts Club held the gala opening of the Granville Island Stage in October 1979, the Arts Club
was a fully professional company presenting its 16th season of plays. The company is now in its 48th season.
