ARTISTIC MANAGING DIRECTOR’S MESSAGECOUPLESAs we celebrate our 50 th anniversary with the opening of the GranvilleIsland Stage season with Venus in Fur, this two-person play reminds meof the many two-handers we have done at our theatres over the years. Some of the most memorable performances have shone in the focusedattention of a play with only two actors. The first was at our SeymourStreet Arts Club in 1966; The Owl and the Pussycat by Bill Manhoff, directed by Otto Lowy, with John Sparks and Linda Sorensen. Otto, John, and Linda were stalwarts in the early Arts Club days. Otto in particular directed 15productions, starting in the first season and carrying on until 1974, when he directed the10 th anniversary production of Seymour Street’s opening show, Light Up the Sky by MossHart. In 1975 I directed three two-handers: Sleuth by Antony Shafer, with Owen Foran and DavidSchurmann; The Sea Horse by James Irwin, with Bob Haley and Janet Wright; and the musicalI Do! I Do! by Jones and Schmidt, with Ruth Nichol and Dean Regan. These three productionswere re-mounted several times over the years, as well as going out on our local tours. Theactors in those shows were important in the 1970s in helping establish the Arts Club as animportant alternate theatre in the city. The summer of 1978 saw the production of one of the most memorable of two-handers:Same Time, Next Year starring Ruth Nichol and Jackson Davies. Produced at the PlayhouseTheatre as a fundraiser for the new theatre that was to open in 1979 on Granville Island, itproved to be a big hit helping the Granville Island Stage open debt-free. In the 1980s therewere several stunning two-handers including The Gin Game by D.L. Coburn, with ShirleyBroderick and Robert Clothier, directed byNorman Browning (1982), The Mystery ofIrma Vep by Charles Ludlam, with JohnMoffat and Morris Panych, directed by LarryLillo (1987), and Danny and the Deep BlueSea by John Patrick Shanley, with Jay Brazeauand Suzanne Ristic, directed by KathrynShaw (1988). All took place at the SeymourStreet Arts Club.We celebrate these actors and directors aswe are in the presence of Lindsey Angell andVince Gale carrying on the tradition offocusing their talents on a play that onlyneeds two actors. Enjoy their performances.Bill MillerdArtistic Managing Directorartisticdirector@artsclub.comOne appetizer per voucher with purchase of entree.Maximum value $11.00 Expires November 30, 20136

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S MESSAGEWelcome to the first production on the Granville Island Stage of our 50 thAnniversary Season. As part of our celebrations we have asked leadersfrom the arts and our city to write a little bit about what is on their mindin the context of our milestone season. Here is an excerpt of a piecewritten by Jim Wright, General Director of the Vancouver Opera. The fullpiece is available on our web site (www.artsclub.com) as will many moresubmissions throughout the year.Howard R. JangExecutive Directorhjang@artsclub.comI often wonder if “major” arts organizations such as opera companies, symphony orchestras, and important regional theatres would be possibleto build from scratch today. Since the mid-20 th century, there have beenso many changes in what we believe to be possible and how we live ourlives. I send up praise for the thousands of women who worked tirelesslyto establish companies, guilds, women’s committees, and galas acrossour continent—women who stuffed envelopes and made sandwiches, but also wrote checks, badgered others to write checks, too, and harassedbusinesses into supporting their cause. They all willed these great organizations intoexistence! Would we be able to harness such a priceless volunteer workforce like that today?Another concern expressed by cultural leaders across North America is over the nextgeneration of professional leadership. Who will follow the founders and builders? Willyounger professionals have the patience to stay with companies for the long haul and providesustainable leadership? Will we develop more Bill Millerds in the future? These are real and pressing concerns for not-for-profit arts organizations and theiraudiences. One could wallow in doubt and pessimism; one could rail against the youngergeneration and its lack of patience; one could hold out hope that one’s institution will lastat least long enough for one’s own retirement! But that’s the easy path. Any of us who havewatched theatre companies, symphonies, ballet companies, and opera companies come tolife, grow and thrive; any of us who have witnessed the miracle of artistic creation, the energyof artists, the dedication of unpaid and paid disciples of the arts, cannot help but beoptimistic. Yes, the world has changed since the mid-20th century; yes, our volunteers, audiences, and artists have different wants and needs now; yes, we must find ways to engagefuture volunteer and professional leaders. And we will. Because performing art—thechemistry between creator and recipient—has always been with us and is essential to us ashuman beings. Thanks to the thousands of volunteers and professionals who have made ittheir mission over the decades to provide their communities with strong organizations,Arts Club Theatre Company Websitedesigned and hosted bymore people than ever before can participate inthe arts in theatres large and small, in tents, onthe sidewalks, in the parks, on the beach. Wewill—we must—find ways to continue thisimportant work for another 50 years, and 50more after that....E-Commerce Solutions 604.831.5097www.worldexposure.comJames W. DIRECTORS’ NOTESA NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR AND ASSISTANT DIRECTOR“Pleasure alone makes existence worthwhile. A pleasure-seeker has a difficult time partingfrom life.”Leopold von Sacher-Masoch, Venus in FursMany of us spend a lot of time thinking about sex. Safe to say, the next 90 minutes is notgoing to detract you from that. And, most likely, it’ll make you laugh as well. However, Venus in Fur might also make you think about gender, power, and desire. The playis based on Leopold von Sacher-Masoch’s 1870s erotica novel Venus in Furs, which was notonly decried as completely scandalous during its time, but also inaugurated the term Sado-Masochism. As such, David Ives’ adaptation, which features a witty play-within-a-playscenario, provides an insightful exploration of, and challenge to, the history of sex, oftraditional power struggles, of the hierarchies at the core of modern theatre, and of taboodesires—asking ultimately how much of our lives may actually be ‘a little S&M’... How muchof our lives is governed by desire? How does our desire for commodities mirror our desire for sex and romance? Can weproperly negotiate power relationships? What are the boundaries between subject andobject? What do we find titillating? And what is perversion?~David Mackay and Fannina Waubert de PuiseauM.J.
