A Wonderful Time at Rockin’ Rogers Days!
Thank you to all the volunteers who gave their me, donated their resources and showed Christ’s love to the community
during this fun event. We appreciate everyone who decorated the float, walked in the parade, cheered us on
from the sidelines and worked in or patronized the food booth. This year, we sold pork chops on a sck at the booth
and ice cream cups along the parade route, with proceeds helping the ministries of Word of Peace. Thank you for
another successful year at Rockin’ Rogers Days!

The Growing Season
Every day, at least twice a day, I drive by a corn field on my way to and from the church. All of a
sudden one day, I noced that the corn was really starng to come up. It’s amazing how that corn
has been growing there every day, seemingly unnoced, and now I can see it growing.
Faith and its growth are surely amazing as well. As Jesus said in one of our recent gospel readings,
“The kingdom of God is as if someone would scaer seed on the ground, and would sleep and rise
night and day, and the seed would sprout and grow, he does not know how.” (Mark 4:26-27) Seeds are scaered and seemingly
buried—Word and sacrament, prayers, tesmony, family tradions, church community tradions. But aer the appointed me,
faith and life burst forth.
You may have seen the recent findings of the Pew Research Center which says that since 2007, the number of Americans who
idenfy themselves as Chrisan has declined by 7.8%. But interesng enough, that same study also found that there has been a
0% change in internet searches regarding religion during that same me period. This suggests to me that there are hidden
seeds of faith sll waing to grow. We cannot lose hope in the seeds of faith planted in our children and grandchildren and
those who have been through church school, confirmaon, and so forth.
This fall Pastor Keith and I are looking forward to some excing new sermon series and small group opportunies which will be
announced later this summer. It is our hope that seeds of faith will connue to be planted through these opportunies and that
faith and life connues to burst forth.

Word of Peace Presents:
Word of Peace presents a producon of the Broadway musical, Godspell, on August
20-23, under the direcon of Rogers High School Theatre Director, Hope
Murray, and Minister of Worship & Music at Word of Peace, Michael Sahlen.
Godspell brings the gospel of Mahew to life. Jesus gathers a group of followers
and, through song and dance, teaches them some of the best-loved parables. The
show becomes more serious towards the end of the second act, as Jesus is betrayed
by Judas and crucified. But don’t worry… there’s a happy ending!
Audions will take place at Word of Peace on Tuesday, July 7 at 6:30pm in the
choir room. Actors must be of high school age or older and should prepare a song
to sing and be ready to move. Rehearsals will be held on weekday evenings.

signing up for the Habitat For Humanity
Summer 2015 Project!
Word of Peace will be sending volunteers
to help build a home in Robbinsdale during
the weeks of July 6 AND July 13. Join us for some fun
while helping a family receive a new home. Volunteers must
be 16 or older and no prior experience or special talent is
needed. Just a big heart and willingness to parcipate. You
pick the day(s) you want to volunteer.

CROSS Corner
Some of our neighbors and
friends find it hard to just put a
meal on the table or have a lile
extra for snacks or fresh produce
during the summer months, and
many kids have just one meal a
day. Please give what you can, when you can. Even $5, $10,
or $20 can make a difference to someone in need.
As school supplies become available this month, please consider
purchasing some extra supplies for a child in need. Calculators
and backpacks are needed most, but ALL supplies
are needed at this me.
VOLUNTEERS are sll needed to help out at the Rogers
Farmers Market. Please call CROSS to volunteer or find out
more.
GENERAL NEEDS: Oatmeal and other hot cereals; granulated,
brown, and powdered sugar.

Mission Jamaica 2016
Come to an informaonal meeng on July 13
or August 10 at 7:20pm and learn about joining
the team from Zion Lutheran Church in
Buffalo on their mission trip to Jamaica on
February 20-27, 2016. The team divides up to
build a home, provide care at a special needs
orphanage, and provide mobile medical clinics.

“God’s Work. Our Hands.”
Service Weekend
This year, Word of Peace will parcipate in a “God’s Work. Our Hands.”
service weekend on Saturday, September 12 through Monday, September
14. This is an opportunity to celebrate who we are as the Evangelical Lutheran
Church in America — one church, freed in Christ to serve and love
our neighbor.
The idea for the “God’s Work. Our Hands.” service weekend is this: ELCA
members are called to put their faith into acon by engaging in service
acvies in their neighborhood and surrounding community. We will be
arranging a number of family-friendly and ability-friendly opportunies to
serve at the church and in our community over the course of the weekend.
Some acvies include:
Car wash
Card-making for veterans
Volunteering at CROSS Food Shelf
Vising & singing at assisted living facilies
Working on projects for surrounding cies
Preparing bags for the Bag of Hope project
We will celebrate with a Sunday lunch on September 13 and conclude the
service event on Monday, September 14 with a special ice cream social.

2016 Travel Opportunies with
Lutheran Partners in Global Ministry
“Exploring Your Faith through Interfaith Dialog
& Service: The Intersecons of Chrisanity
with Hinduism, Islam, and Sikhism in India”
(February 2016) On this first-of-its-kind
trip for LPGM you will visit LPGM’s partners in
the north of India (Church of North India) as
well as the south (Arcot Lutheran Church). This
trip is ideal for pastors, lay leaders, and others
interested in exploring these world faiths in a
Chrisan seng. On your three stops
(Amritsar, Delhi, Tiruvannamali) you will have
opportunies to learn from church leaders,
interact with others through service, and visit
the central sites of these faiths. All of this will
be framed in the context of understanding
these tradions as a way to strengthen our
own Chrisan faith.
“Explore India – For Families” (July 2016) Mission
travel as a family teaches us about other
cultures, and provides opportunies to serve
others in Christ’s name and forge lasng rela-
onships as we explore our own faith and
deepen our own connecons as families. LPGM
will be leading its first family-centric trip to
visit their partner schools and boarding homes
in south India. Limited space is sll available
and we suggest that you consider this trip for
students ages 12 or older.

I enjoy reading quotes from wise people. They make me think about a bigger
picture. They make me think about more than myself. They make me
forget, if only for a moment, my pey problems and issues. Over and over
I read that people who help others are happier than those who don’t.
Helping others takes our minds off of our troubles (which we all have and
always will have).
I receive some of my health care at the VA campus in Saint Cloud. If you
ever want to forget your own troubles, go there and look around. It will
only take a moment for you to see that there is always someone who has
it worse than you do.
Helping others can come in many forms. Time, talent and money are three
of the ways to lend a hand. Word of Peace has many ways to get involved
and to make a difference: in your church, in your community, in someone

Youth Ministry

There will be a Commissioning Service on Sunday, July 12 at
10am for the youth and adult leaders who will be aending the
Naonal Youth Gathering in Detroit. Come pray for us as we prepare
for our trip!
MS: MSM.AM – July 5 at 10am in the Youth Room and outside.
Come for food, devoons and games. Friends are always welcome!
MS/HS: Valleyfair—Wednesday, August 12. Cost is $35, includes
admission and bus transportaon. All youth must provide a signed
and completed Word of Peace Health & Registraon form (located
on the wall outside the Youth Ministry Office). A sign-up sheet will
be posted on the Youth bullen board beginning Sunday, July 26.

Group: July's Topic is Privacy in the
Digital Age—Wednesday, July 15 at
10am at the new Senior Center. Books

for 8 different global topics. This monthly
foreign policy discussion lasts roughly an
hour as we discuss an important global
topic through readings, videos, local expert
presentaons and group discussions.
