Welcome at ESASO
Ophthalmology is a well-established specialization in all
European countries; and there are educational programmes
in hospitals and universities providing a good educational
level in general ophthalmology.
Master’s degree programmes are usually poorly developed.
As a result, ophthalmology graduates wishing to specialize
further need to find an established practice or clinic
willing to take them on for on-site job training on a day-today
basis. Others prefer fellowship programmes available
in the US, although this option is unavailable to those who
graduated outside the. On this basis, the creation of a
European School of Advanced Studies in Ophthalmology
would seem to respond to an actual need.
To realize this challenging project we looked for the help
of colleagues and support by different universities. The
Università della Svizzera italiana, Lugano Campus encouraged
this initiative by making available funding as well
as human and logistical resources. The choice of Lugano
was considered ideal since USI is a young university in central
Europe, with a high academic level in other subjects.
It also has easy access to an efficient public transport net-
work, including proximity to the international airport
north of Milan. Its good transport connections are a plus
for international students.
Why begin with vitreo-retina? It is probably the most
difficult subspecialty to learn with the highest demand in
many countries. Likewise, the latest advances widen the
treatment options and increase the need for well-trained
specialists. ESASO offers theoretical tuition as well as
practical training. The theoretical curriculum can be
completed at the same university where the surgica practices
are carried out. Those students who finish their
education will receive their corresponding degree from
the university.
A detailed programme has been devised for the first few
years with an expert team of recognized clinical and teaching
experience. The teaching principle in ESASO classes
will be a dynamic combination of in-depth exposition of
topics with direct, hands-on training where the lecturer
shows students how to tackle doubts and problems.
ESASO doesn’t want to limit itself to vitreo-retinal pathology.
It would also like to include other subspecialties such
as cornea and refractive, cataract, glaucoma, uveitis, oculoplasty,
pediatry and strabismus among others. We hope
that ESASO will turn into a centre for the dissemination of
new and effective ophthalmological learning and expertise;
and we believe that our students will contribute to this
transfer of knowledge for the sake of all our patients.
ESASO | A vision of collaboration | Page 2
ESASO provides ophthalmologists with the best postgraduate training based on
state-of-the art science and practical experience on highest international levels for
the benefits of eye care and cure of patients.
According to the directives of the
Convention of Bologna, the basic
training system is proposed by
Universities, while an effective
post-University training is low or
not developed in Europe.

ESASO at the University
of Lugano
ESASO is headquartered at the Università Italiana Svizzera
(Italian University in Switzerland) in the Cantone
Ticino, South of Switzerland. The University was founded
in 1996.
This is hardly a drawback, however; on the contrary, a
young USI is receptive to all sorts of opportunities to
explore and pioneer. It is willing to take on enriching
new initiatives; free to put forward strategies to meet the
challenges confronting modern man: the environment,
the economy, society, and the new technologies.
Combined with its privileged geographic position – USI
acts as a bridge between South and North for academic
training and higher education. The USI is characterised
by steadily rising student numbers, growing success in
research and the international mix of its actors (the highest
proportion in Switzerland), whether students, research and
doctoral assistants, or professors. Today, over 1,500 students
from 35 countries are enrolled at the USI in Lugano.
The Campus buildings host offices for faculty and staff,
classrooms, labs accessible 24/7, a canteen, and several
areas for individual and group study. The Campus is
not only a place for studying, but also one of cultural
exchange.

Fellowships:
General Principles
ESASO has created an academic curriculum consisting
of taught specialisation modules, leading to the degree of
Master of Science in Ophthalmology (MSO), and runs a
Fellowship scheme for eye specialists.
The ESASO Fellowship is an advanced specialist training
programme in which the recipient can acquire a thorough,
in-depth understanding of the specific subject and, accordingly,
proficiency in the exercise of the clinical-surgical
profession.
Aims
The Fellow’s advanced training shall be conducted within
one of the high specialist teaching hospitals or university
centres that have entered a partnership agreement with
ESASO and agreed on a training programme on an ophthal-
mological specialist branch.
The Fellow achieves proficiency in the
execution techniques for all diagnostic
procedures covered by the Fellowship; is
being involved in all clinical/treatment
decisions; and has mastered a good
theoretical knowledge of operating
techniques. In addition, the Fellow has
