From the Pastor
The custom of a “Jubilee” has its roots in ancient Hebrew law.
Our common, contemporary understanding of a jubilee has
developed into a notion of a time for celebration, joyous remembrance and hopeful planning
for the future. The first official “Jubilee” or “Holy Year” of the church was declared in 1300 by
Pope Boniface VIII.
In the Roman Catholic tradition and understanding, a Holy Year, or Jubilee, is a great religious
event. It is a year of forgiveness and remediation of sins, it is a year of reconciliation between
adversaries, of conversion and receiving the Sacrament of Reconciliation, and consequently,
of solidarity, hope, justice, commitment to serve God with joy and in peace with our brothers
and sisters. A Jubilee year is above all the year of Christ, who brings life and grace to humanity.
What more cause would we ever have greater than that for celebration?!
Each year in the life of Saint Gabriel the Archangel Catholic Church is filled with thousands of
opportunities that offer grace, forgiveness, healing, learning, hopefulness and redemption.
This year just passing and the year to come are prime examples of causes for celebration.
Within our parish community, are numerous initiatives emerging that will positively impact
us for years to come. Upgrades to parish technology, enhancements to our
church building environment, new employee members joining the parish team,
groundbreaking programs happening in our school, and so much more! There
are numerous reasons to celebrate our past achievements. The remarkable advances
taking place within our parish now, and those coming in 2014 and 2015,
will give us additional occasions to celebrate and take rightful pride in what
God can do, when we but listen to him and cooperate with his will. - Rev. John Schwartzlose
As many of you may know, one of my all-time favorite movies is the 1964 classic,
Celebration!
“Becket” starring Richard Burton and Peter O’Toole, which tells the story of St.
Thomas Becket, and his struggles with King Henry II of England. There’s a scene
in this movie which I think so very well describes the true and authentic Christian outlook in a
perfectly encapsulated form.
On the day before Becket is to be ordained the new Archbishop of Canterbury, he decides to sell all
the gold from his residence and give the money to the poor. When he is taken to task for this by his
rival the Bishop of London, Becket cheerily responds, “I’m really enjoying all of this. You know, I’m
beginning to believe he’s not a sad God after all.”
So say we all!
The word gospel literally means “good news”, something we should always remember. God’s coming
to Earth and taking our form is ultimately an act of love; it is incontrovertible proof that God
loves us all and wants to reveal himself, his nature and his intentions to us, his children.
God is fulfilling; he is refreshing, empowering and life-giving. We see him as the perfect parent, the
one who wishes to give us the greatest of all gifts – his divine grace living within us. All of Christ’s
teachings flow from those famous words so beautifully phrased in the third chapter of John’s Gospel,
“for God so loved the world that he sent his only Son so that the world might have life through
him.”
This is indeed proof of God’s loving, joyous nature. Becket was perfectly correct - God is a happy,
overflowing-with-joy God who wants nothing more than to share himself with us. As autumn begins
to take shape all around us, let us remember that we have powerful reason to celebrate. Christ
has come . . . and he comes to bring us life!
2014 St. Gabriel’s Accountability Report on pages 6 & 7

Fr. Jim was as excited as a child on Christmas morning
when he was told we would be celebrating the 50 th anniversary
of his Ordination here at St. Gabriel. So, the
planning and preparation began! We (the planning
committee) didn’t let Fr. Jim in on the planning, but he
knew, whatever happened, it was going to be one of the
biggest celebrations of his life. And I think that he was
not disappointed. I wasn’t surprised in the least that
there was such an outpouring of love and gratitude
from parishioners, family and friends as they turned
out to congratulate Fr. Jim for saying YES all those
years ago.
Fr. Jim helped get some pictures together for the video
that was played at the reception. He explained the
journey that got him to his 50 th anniversary. I could
see, and feel how important being a priest is to him. His
love of God and serving others is unwavering. I was in
total amazement of his memory of all the parishes he
had served before coming to St. Gabriel. He recalled
lots of good memories and even had a few stories to
tell. I loved every minute of it! It was an honor to be a
part of this celebration for a priest who I consider to be
one of the greatest.
-Rhonda Becker
I would like to thank all those who were so generous to
me on my 50th anniversary. A big thanks, too, to Fr.
John and to Tim McGinty, Barbara Harbsmeier, Mary
Lou Gardner and the Stewardship Committee who
worked so hard to make the anniversary party so successful.
Thanks to Pat Lynch who emceed and to everyone
who had any part in the celebration. Everything
was perfect ˗ the anniversary Mass, the food, the photos,
etc. Another big thanks to Rhonda Becker (with
some help from Margaret Reinert) who put together
the photo session. I was totally overwhelmed by the
party and all the generosity. I am so happy in my vocation
to the priesthood, and you added greatly to that
happiness. The priesthood is such a great gift. Please
pray for vocations to the priesthood.
Sincerely,
Fr. Jim
The daughter of a preacher asked her father, “Dad, why do you
bow your head in silence for ten to fifteen seconds before you
begin your sermon?” The preacher was very excited that she
even noticed this and he was very proud of his daughter. He
responded, “Honey, I bow my head and say a silent prayer that
God will help me give a good sermon.” The daughter replied,
“Why doesn’t it work?”
“High School Youth Ministry at St. Gabriel the Archangel is a process, not a program, by which
our high school youth are led to a deeper relationship with Christ, each other and the world
around them.” This very simple sentence is how we introduce Youth Ministry at St. Gabriel.
These are very nice words, but what do they really mean. For nearly twelve years, I have had the privilege to see
these words come to life through the experience and hard work of our youth. But, I have always struggled with
how to really describe what that looks like in practical terms. This past summer, one of our young adults offered
an astounding image of his Youth Ministry experience. During our annual Senior High Retreat, Tanner Thieneman
gave a talk about Stability. During his talk, he said, “When I was writing this, I got tired of using words, so I
started using numbers. I calculated my mileage during my four years in St. Gabriel Youth Ministry.” He included
the drive to and from our weekly meetings, service trips - four trips to Appalachia, two trips to the National
Catholic Youth Conference, and our weekly trips to St. Vincent de Paul in the summer. It was astounding to me
that in his four years, he traveled over 5000 miles while he was a participant. Now that is something to celebrate
on its own, but when you look at our group as a whole, he is one of many who have taken a journey similar
to his. Truthfully, the miles traveled are not as important as what happened on the journey. We have, among
other things, laughed a lot, cried some, played games with homeless men and adults with disabilities, fixed
homes, learned about our faith, befriended people who live on the margins, and, through all of this, strengthened
our relationship with God and each other. We have much to be proud of in our youth. Henry David Thoreau
once said, “Live your beliefs and you can turn the world around.” Our youth are
showing us just how that works.
“A Celebration to Remember!”
2014
Each year, the summer picnic brings together the entire
neighborhood community as well as the Archdiocese of
Louisville to visit, gather, feast, and act like kids
for two nights a year. The picnic is not only a
fundraising opportunity for the church and
school, but it represents a homecoming celebration.
You will always run into somebody that
you know or recognize. With each smile, handshake
or hug, the greetings all around represent
genuine joy and excitement.
We volunteered at the Large Plush Animal
booth on Saturday, August 2, this year. The
game allowed you to guess which number would be
drawn by placing a dime on 100 separate numbers.
There were three sides to the booth and we were busy
all night long. We saw folks try to win their favorite prizes
of colorful dogs, bears, cows, birds and monkeys.
There are also different strategies witnessed. Some only
wagered their favorite number, while others have their
kids pick each time. Other potential players would
glance at the wheel from afar and try to determine
trends. This game of chance crowned many adults and
children as top prize winners. That excitement was so
much fun to watch. We would hoot and holler along
with each winner as they were choosing their reward.
Each smile was contagious! Each winner shared their
celebration with us.
I had a chance to meet some folks during the
night. Pat from Colorado was brought by her
sister-in-law to play games all evening. She
won a cake and a giant fruit basket.
Olivia Boles (pictured) won a purple bear.
Upon guessing the right number, she exclaimed
“I felt like a winner and jumped up
and down!”
At the end of the night, there were no losers to be had
because St. Gabriel Parish will give back to the community
with their stewardship and gifts from the festivities.
Congratulations to everybody who came out to the 2014
summer picnic!
Director
of Music
St. Gabriel Music Ministry is
spearheading a fun new project
this fall that we hope will involve
and energize everyone in
the parish! We will be organizing
St. Gabriel’s first parishwide
lip dub video!
So what exactly is a lip dub? A lip dub is a type of
video that combines lip synching and audio dubbing to
make a music video. This pop culture phenomenon
has become widely popular, and you could most certainly
find hundreds of examples on YouTube. Locally,
Assumption High School created such a video in 2011.
So far as we could find, no other local churches have
tackled a project like this.
So why would St. Gabriel want to do a lip dub?
There are several benefits to this project. One of these
is to visually show off all of our ministries that we have
available in which to become involved, and to do it in
an appealing and fresh manner. Hopefully, we can let
parishioners and others in the faith community see
that St. Gabriel is an evolving church with opportuni˗
What is Lip Dub?
ties for everyone. But the number one reason is FUN!
What an exciting and enjoyable way to come together
as a community and give praise for all that we have
and do here at St. Gabriel!
Who will be involved in the lip dub? A committee is
still forming to manage all aspects of planning the video,
co-chaired by myself and Clint Otis. We hope to
have representation from a wide variety of parish ministries,
including the Youth Ministry, Boy Scouts, Athletics,
Men’s Club, and (obviously!) music. Even more
ministries will be involved in the actual filming, which
we hope will happen this fall. But there is still plenty
of time to become involved! If you are as excited about
this video as we are, we would love to join your enthusiasm
to ours in planning and executing the lip dub
video. Also, if you or someone you know has expertise
in video production and editing, we would like to talk
with you. Simply contact me at lkline@stgabriel.net.
Stay tuned for this and other exciting and fun projects
coming out of Music Ministry in the months to come!
Thank you for a wonderful summer!
This has been my first summer assignment as a seminarian,
and you have made it a very good one. I have
had a blast getting to meet many of you and learning
about all of the ways God is working through you. From
Vacation Bible School to men’s Bible study, from the
picnic to Eucharistic Adoration, from the
finance council to the youth group, I have
been able to experience and participate in
many aspects of the life of the parish.
Accompanying Fr. John and Fr. Jim to administer
the sacrament of Anointing of the
Sick, as well as taking the Eucharist to Glen
Ridge Nursing Home, has helped me learn how a priest
can bring Christ’s healing presence into the midst of
suffering and loneliness. Eating lunch in the cafeteria
with schoolchildren was a vivid experience of the life
and energy that the school brings to the parish. Attending
meetings of the parish council and many parish
committees has helped me to understand the many
practical details that go into managing a parish of this
size. Interviewing the parish staff has helped me to appreciate
the diverse gifts and talents that they have
generously offered to the service of the Church. Assisting
at baptisms and funerals has shown me how the
sacraments and rituals of the Church inject meaning
and God’s grace into the important moments of life.
I have been able to
experience and participate
in many aspects
of the life of the
parish.
Simply spending time in the parish office has given me
a feel for some of the daily rhythms of parish life.
Please remember to pray for me as I return to formation
at St. Meinrad Seminary, as well as for Kirby
and all of our seminarians. Please join me in praying, as
well, that the young men and women of St. Gabriel will
hear and answer God’s call to serve Him as priests, as
religious brothers and sisters, and as holy and
faithful husbands and wives.
I want to thank Fr. John for taking such good
care of Kirby and me this summer and making
sure that we had a good and productive experience.
I also want to thank Fr. Jim, Deacon Stephen,
and the parish staff for all that they do to support
the parish and all they have taught me through their
ministry. St. Gabriel is a parish with a lot going on and a
lot to be proud of, and I am confident that you have
even greater things ahead. Thank you for letting me be
a part of it.
Now that’s “Weird”
Weird. According to Webster it means “Odd; bizarre, fantastic.” But
for 125 children and 95 volunteers this summer, we know it really
means something is special, unique, rare, never seen before, one-ofa-kind…
Weird is what this year’s “Weird Animals” VBS celebrated.
Jesus showed his unconditional love to lepers, outcasts and
criminal s- all folks who were probably considered weird at the
time. The things that Jesus did must have seemed weird to the people
around him. After all, talking to a Samaritan woman? Totally
unheard of. Hanging out with lepers? Gasp! Washing his disciples’
feet? Really?
Weird may not seem like the correct word to use when we talk
about faith or church. It’s not a word that we are used to hearing.
But many of our children know what it is like to feel weird. Left out.
Different. Afraid.
This year, with the help of some “Weird Animals” like Axl the Axolotls
and Milton the star-nosed mole, we celebrated the wonderful
unique and “weird” way that God has created each of us and we
learned:
Even when you're left out....Jesus loves you!
Even when you don’t understand…Jesus loves you!
Even though you’re different…Jesus loves you!
Even though you do wrong…Jesus loves you!
Even when you’re afraid…Jesus loves you!
So I’m weird. Guess what? I like it!
I give thanks and praise to God for
bringing me to Louisville and allowing me this
opportunity to serve our parish as your new
Pastoral Associate. After only 4 short weeks,
St. Gabriel already feels like home because so
many of you, from both the school and parish,
have stepped forward to introduce yourselves
and to offer assistance to help ease the transition.
On that note, I would like to take a moment
to share with you a bit of information about myself. One
of four girls, I was born and raised in Florence, AL. My father,
paternal grandparents, and immediate relatives are from
north Alabama, but my mother and maternal grandparents
are from Bowling Green and Park City, KY (my grandfather
worked at Mammoth Cave). Thus, Kentucky is not foreign to
me as I do have ancestral roots here, so to speak. I attended
undergrad school at Auburn University (War Eagle!!), earning
a professional degree in architecture. After practicing for over
22 years throughout the southeast, I finally succumbed to
God’s call to teach our Catholic faith. I relocated to Memphis,
TN to attend Christian Brothers University, earning a master’s
degree in teaching; followed by teaching religion in the Catholic
school system to elementary, middle, and eventually, high
school. Upon completion of professional-level catechetical
certification from the Diocese of Memphis, I segued into
parish ministry, teaching religious education and sacramental
preparation classes to children and youth as well as adult
CELEBRATE OUR NEWEST MEMBERS
To the Brilliant Community of St. Gabriel,
Thank you all for the wonderful welcome that I have received
here. I feel incredibly honored and blessed to have been welcomed
into such a wonderful family. Most recently, my educational
experience includes teaching Preschool at Sacred Heart
for 6 years. While there, I was given the opportunity to work
with a variety of ages in both the general classroom as well as
teaching art. My education includes a Bachelor of Arts Degree
from Centre College in Studio Art, as well as a Master of Arts
in Teaching from the University of the Cumberlands.
I’m a mother of two gorgeous girls, 8 and 11 years
old, that keep me on my toes with cross country and
volleyball teams. As a hobby, I also teach both children’s
and adult painting classes in St. Matthews at a
paint and sip style studio. Being born and raised in
Louisville, I have a great deal of pride in this community.
My family has been in Kentucky for generations
and I’m proud to say that I have family ties to The Beaumont
Inn in Harrodsburg, which happens to be my favorite place to
visit.
I will be working hard alongside everyone at St. Gabriel to
continue to grow the early childhood program and enrich the
already beautiful environment. Jennifer Schulz and I will be
working to incorporate the “Splash Into Kindergarten” curriculum
into our school day programs. With having a background
in the Arts, one of my goals includes implementing a
fun, educational, and various theme–directed Summer Camp
program, focusing on many areas of the Arts. We are working
towards having camps geared toward visual arts, drama, and
faith formation and RCIA. Currently, I am enrolled in graduate
studies with Saint Meinrad Archabbey, working toward a second
master’s degree in theology with completion anticipated
for the end of 2015. After serving as director of religious education
with my previous two parishes, I accepted Fr. John and
the search committee’s invitation to join St. Gabriel as your
new pastoral associate. And God is not finished with me
yet. Scripture tells us that it was by faith that Abraham
obeyed when he was called to “go out to a place he was to receive
as an inheritance, even though he did not know where
he was to go.” It was by faith that he journeyed to an unknown
place, for he was looking for “the city with foundations,
whose architect and maker is God” (Heb 11:8-10). Now at
mid-life with both parents deceased, God has opened a brand
new door of adventure for me; and even though I cannot see
the road ahead, I am diving in with both feet…Blessings,
Pastoral Associate
I began my employment with St. Gabriel
in July of this year. A native of Louisville, I graduated from
PRP in 2010 and attended Jefferson Community and Technical
College, from which I received several plumbing
certificates. I live in the south end of Louisville near Iroquois
I like science fiction books and computer
music with performances and/or exhibitions at the end of the
camps. Possibly even an Odyssey of the Mind, Helping our
Community, and learning to be “Green” themed camps as well.
Along with the staff, I will work hard to continue the legacy of
success established here at St. Gabriel Child Care with strong
relationships with parents, students, staff, and community
partners. The staff will be working hard continuing to foster a
nurturing and safe environment for children, implementing
the use of instructional technology into the classroom, consistently
implementing the newly adopted curriculum,
and providing exciting and challenging enrichment
opportunities for all of our students.
I am passionate about teaching children to become
individual and forever-learning problem solvers.
The talented Child Care staff will be working towards
teaching the whole child, allowing students to
learn through their mistakes, discovering different
ways to absorb information through experimentation, and
helping them to make good choices all around. During the
course of the year, the staff will continue to work together to
provide opportunities in preparing the students to become
world class citizens with a solid foundation created here at
our school. As Director, my door is always open and I welcome
your input, concerns, and thoughts.
included in this category.
√ Supplies and Services expenses are
down 25.1% to budget, up 11.9% year-overyear.
Expense category includes meeting,
training and technology expenses.
Technology expenses were primarily associated with the classroom IPad program. Approximately $72,000 in IPads were purchased
this budget year; a portion of the cost is offset by school technology fees (see School Tuition Income)
√ Activities include stewardship drive mailings, pamphlets, and stewardship committee costs. Additionally, parish
hospitality expenses, totaling $4,787, are included, and were significantly down to budget and year-over-year.
√ Instructional Supplies include expenses tied to textbooks, project and craft materials that support our curriculum in
√
school and through various children’s and adult ministries.
Depreciation expense is accumulated expenses from all property and fixed assets greater than $1,000 in value that
have not been fully depreciated yet. This fiscal year, two items were added to the depreciation schedule: the Cottage
View Court property and replacement computers for the computer lab.
√ Plants and Grounds expenses were down 16.3% to budget, and flat YOY. Expense reductions were driven by a 32%
reduction in maintenance and building repairs. The maintenance team has been able to handle more repairs in-house.
Additionally, the campus cleaning schedule was reorganized and a new cleaning company was contracted in the
spring, resulting in a $22,082 savings. Grounds keeping expense was up YOY due to the additional snow and ice
removal needed this past winter.
Assessments & Donations are parish assessments which represent a key income source for the Archdiocese. Assessments
totaled 6.5% of income, and are comprised of three components: 1) 4% for the Church, 2) 1.34% for the retired
priests fund and 3) 1.16% for the archdiocesan newspaper, The Record. Next year, total parish assessments will be 6%.
Auxiliary Program expenses are offset by auxiliary program income, and represent expenses tied to various
organizations and ministries within our parish. These organizations include Athletics, PTSO, St. Vincent de Paul and
Cafeteria operations.
Extraordinary and Capital expenses include four campus improvement projects that were budgeted and approved
unanimously by our Finance Council and the Archdiocese:
● This summer, Payne Electric and John Craig Acoustical & Flooring completed Phase 2 of the upgrade of lighting
and installation of new drop ceiling panels in the classrooms and hallway of the parish school building. 2013
Summer Festival profits were used to fund this project, totaling approximately $59,361. A portion of those
expenses are reflected in this fiscal year.
● Two unoccupied homes on Augustine Way, next to our Preschool house, were purchased for $244,919 to allow
for future campus expansion.
● The Maintenance office, located in the school basement next to St. Gabriel Preschool, was renovated to allow
for a third preschool classroom, and 14 additional children, in our programs. The completed project totaled
$3,495. Maintenance relocated to the Multipurpose Building.
● Raymark Construction completed renovation of the brick and masonry joints on the Church and Multipurpose
Building, totaling $96,500. A portion of those expenses are reflected in this fiscal year.
