The Great Name Change Game
It's been an interesting journey from Pulse to wholenote
One reader, very eru;ly on, said "... you will probably get
many, many letters from readers telling you how wonderful
PULSE is." True enough! And we did.
"... Your excellent "ImPulse" and "SimPulse"
magazine" (Brian Wilson, (Chris Dawes) and "Re-
North York); "What a good Pulse" (Ruth Budd) and
idea! (Pulse, that is.)" (Patty "Plus" and "Pulsate" (a real
Llossa, New fork); "I crowd favourite). .
appreciate it & enjoy it very But then the tide started
much." (Elena, Etobicoke); to turn. None of the x-Pulse
"... most useful, entertaining names was as simply musical
... constantly growing and as the original. What about .
improving magazine:" (Fred future readers who'd never
Kurban, North York); "a heard of Pulse?
tremendous.asset in assessing We decided the new
what is playing ...." (Steve name would have to stand on
Living, Borough of York); " its own.
the source for concert
That very day it
information." (Douglas arrived: ..."My suggestion is:
Schalin, Toronto);
The Whole Note. You could
"entertaining and informative do whimsical things with the
" (Mohsen Boctor· and Nadia graphics. (Joy GorrkJn,
Lebar Boctor, Etobicoke) Toronto)
Many of the early letters We started rolling it
recommended staying with round our mouths (along
some variation of "pUlse". with "Keynotes" and
Inclined that way ourselves "Acora" and "Courante".)
at first, we considered Slept on. it.
April is exploding with music,
even by Toronto standards.
Take 3pm Sunday April6for
example. Is there a category for
simultaneous downtbeats in the
Guiness Book of World
Records?
(That particular day, by the way
sets a Pulsejwholenote record
for most concerts on one day.)
All this to say, om approach in
these concert notes is even more
scattergun and haphazard than
usual.
YOUTH SERVES
April 5 East York Symphony,
and violinist, Timothy Haig,
winner of this year's Kiwanis
Youth Competition, perform
Ravel's Tzigane, (a work
performed by .Jacques
Israelievitch at his 1967 Paris
debut recital). Also on the
program is Samuel Barber's
wonderful Adagio for Strings.
DUCK!
Was it bassoon or oboe that
once got defined as an ill-wind
that nobody blows good?
Whichever, if yoW' favourite
character in Peter & the Wolf
was the duck, you should
hightail it to Gary Arms~ong
Woodwinds' Canadian Oboe
Festival April 5 & 6.
It includes a concert featuring
many of the best oboe players in
Canada as well as leading
UNIQUE
The Canadian Music
Competitions occupy a unique
place in the Canadian music
scene.
Started in 1959 as the Quebec'
Music Competitions, they have
spread across the country, filling
a need for a music competition
that could prepare students for
and propel them into
' international' competition.
According to Gabriel Leung,
music director of the
· competitions, the list of alumni
of the competitions reads like a
who's who of Canadian
musicians and includes Louis
Lortie, Ofra Harnoy, Angela
Cheng and Martin Beaver.
A non-profit organization,
staffed by volunteers, "the
Competitions" receives
donations from corporations
,
5
such as Yamaha Canada and
also generate funds from selling
tickets to concerts like the
Sunday MatineeJin Missi~uga
Quite a range too.
PILGRIM
One of the most
unusual is St. James'
Cathedral's A
Pilgrim in 1ime, described by its
producers as "a new work about
history, community, faith and
journey".
The production staff are
theatre pros specializing in
community-based theatre. As
such their commitment is to the ·
piece as art and to- helping
community participants in reach
their own potential.
The production will thus 'be
shaped, to an unusual degree, by
its participants' skllls and
interests. Pilgrim in 1ime runs
three days only. .
Canadian Stage Company's
current fnustheat 'venture is
Stephen Sondheim and James
Lapine's recent musical, ,Passion,
described in their promo as "a
compelling· tale of love's
reckless, relentless, fury, and its
power to shatter or redeem."
Whew'.
Passion runs April 7 to May
lOr(by which time, everyone
will no doubt be exhausted!).
On the community front,
Robert Wright and George
Forrest's adaptation of Borodin,
Scarborough Choral Society,
plays April 11-13 and 17 -19.
THE BAND STAND,' APRH.l991
Some of you will remember that last issue we mused on the
place of concert bands in 'our nusicallives, and wondered out
loud if there was enough interest out there for us to make. a
''concert band page" a pennanent niche in this p~blication.
wen here's a sf4rt. .
Eight flute-players in sea.rch of a band.
The new Festival Winq Orchestra is up and running, members
wrote, with an adequate and still growing Complement of
musicians. The band rehearses Tuesday nights at 7:30 at
Newtonbrooke Secondary School and could still lise some new ·
members. Since the initiators of the project were eight fluteplayers
and a conductor, it sounds as if "flutists/flautists ne·ed .
not apply". Interested? Phone Shelley at 416-491-1683 .
April 20 at Etobicoke Collegiate the Etobicoke Community
Concert Band joins forces with an interesting group, the
G.T.A Teachers Wind Ensemble, whose players are or have
all been instrumental music teachers!
The great thing about this group is that it is a wind
ensemble, not a band -- only one instrument to a part, which
translates, in miniature, into the clean, crisp sound. you get
·only with the· very best bands. · ·
The conductor is Bobby Herriott, well known conductor
· · and trumpet player. Among his players are John Liddle,
conductor of the Etobicoke Co~munity Concert Band, Gino
Falconi, conductor of th~ Royal Regiment Band and music
co-ordinator of the Toronto Board of Education and Paul
Miner, president of the Canadian Band Association, Ontario
Chapter. Come and hear new and exciting band repertoire at
