Increasing Flooded Suction 

Pump Station Capacity 

One of the strongest After Market Retrofit areas is upgrading the capacity of an 

underground pump station that also includes new piping layouts. If precise 

pump station dimensions can be given to Smith & Loveless’ After Market 

Division, they can help you upgrade not only Smith & Loveless pump stations, 

but also other manufacturer’s pump stations. By replacing only the pumps and 

piping, this can be a major savings to a city or municipality.

Avoid leakage of sewage into the pump 

station. Close the pump suction and 

discharge isolation valves when 

connecting and removing the test gauge. 

DANGER: Failure to close the 

pump suction and discharge 

isolation valves during 

connection and removal of the 

test gauge could result in 

serious bodily injury or death. 

If there is any question about the valve 

being fully operational, DO NOT attempt 

this test until the valves are repaired. 

Once you have removed the plugs, push a 

screw driver through the hole as the gauge 

port may be plugged with debris. Some 

water will flow out of the port, but it will 

cease in a few seconds. If it does not 

cease, put the plug back in immediately 

and resolve your valve problems. 

Using a reliable pressure gauge, take the following 

3 pressure readings:

Determining Flow 

Measure the wet well to find the volume of liquid between “on” and “off” levels. 

“On” and “Off” levels may be determined by measuring down from the top of the wet well with a tape 

measure during a pumping cycle, or, for underground pump stations, by using the clear plastic tubing 

attached to the standby pump’s priming petcock, as described in the station initial operating instructions 

for setting the level control system. If the station is fitted with a reliable wet well level gauge, it may be 

used to obtain this measurement.

Replacing Volute Gaskets 

Note how many volute gaskets you remove when taking 

apart your rotating assembly. You will need to reinstall the 

same number and thickness to prevent rubbing during 

pump operation. Before turning your pump back to full 

operation, bump the motor to see if you hear any rubbing 

and to check for correct motor rotation. If there is rubbing, 

you will need to add more volute gaskets. If the rotation is 

incorrect, rewire it for correct rotation.

Air Compressors. We sell two replacement Bubbler Air Compressors, the 

9L25C and the 9L25. The 9L25C is the smaller of the two units and the

With the summer 

heat, it is important to 

make sure the 

louvers are open. 

Failure to do so can 

cause excessive 

heat buildup inside the station. This triggers 

your ventilation blower to operate more 

frequently to lower the temperature inside the 

station, thus shortening the life of your 

ventilation blower. Additionally, excess heat 

causes premature motor life and frequently 

leads to nuisance tripping of the overload coils. 

So check to make sure your louvers are open 

today.

The new 1L443H Smith & Loveless Float Check Valve diameter and length were 

completely changed in 1999 to the new design 1L443H for better overall Float 

Check Valve Assembly performance. The Float Check Valve is used on all Smith 

& Loveless Vacuum Primed Pump Stations just preceding the Vacuum Pumps.

Is Your Pump Really Pumping? 

The Pump Flow Sensor is a cost effective way to keep you advised. 

This Kit Includes Everything For A 2-Pump Station

No matter what angle your check valve 

is, the Smith & Loveless Pump Flow 

Sensor bolts on and adjusts to that 

angle. It senses even the smallest check 

valve arm deflections, preventing many 

false pump failure alarms. 

Many pump stations don’t have a sensor 

installed to verify whether the pump is actually 

pumping when it is called to pump. The Smith & 

Loveless Pump Flow Sensor alerts the 

operator if the pump is not pumping. This 

serves as a early warning signal, in advance of 

the pump running totally dry. The mounting 

bracket was designed to mount on any 

manufacturer’s check valve arm. 

The Smith & Loveless Pump Flow Sensor 

detects even the smallest check valve arm 

deflections. If your pump is called to pump and 

the check valve doesn’t open, it sends a signal 

back to the control panel of pump failure. 

Because it can actually sense the smallest 

flows, it prevents many false pump failure 

alarms other types of sensors send out 

because they can’t accurately sense the check 

valve deflection on low flows.

installed, low flows can really be a problem. If 

you have a low flow pump that creates problems 

for your SCADA System, consider the Smith & 

Loveless Pump Sensor Retrofit Kit. It senses 

even the lowest flows. With many check valve 

whisker type limit switches, check valve 

deflection on low flows of 80 GPM or less 

present problems — especially with 4” piping – 

because the check valve movement is very 

minimal. The new Smith & Loveless Pump 

Sensor detects even the slightest deflection in 

the check valve.
