Increasing Flooded Suction
Pump Station Capacity
One of the strongest After Market Retrofit areas is upgrading the capacity of an
underground pump station that also includes new piping layouts. If precise
pump station dimensions can be given to Smith & Loveless’ After Market
Division, they can help you upgrade not only Smith & Loveless pump stations,
but also other manufacturer’s pump stations. By replacing only the pumps and
piping, this can be a major savings to a city or municipality.
Below you will see a few sample pump station layouts. The next time you need
to upgrade, just call Smith & Loveless’ local Representative or the After Market
Division. They will find a retrofit possibility for you.
Tap “B”
Avoid leakage of sewage into the pump
station. Close the pump suction and
discharge isolation valves when
connecting and removing the test gauge.
DANGER: Failure to close the
pump suction and discharge
isolation valves during
connection and removal of the
test gauge could result in
serious bodily injury or death.
If there is any question about the valve
being fully operational, DO NOT attempt
this test until the valves are repaired.
Once you have removed the plugs, push a
screw driver through the hole as the gauge
port may be plugged with debris. Some
water will flow out of the port, but it will
cease in a few seconds. If it does not
cease, put the plug back in immediately
and resolve your valve problems.
Using a reliable pressure gauge, take the following
3 pressure readings:
READING #1:
At tap on pump discharge nozzle (A) with pump
“on”:
_______ psi x 2.31 = ___________ Ft.
READING #2:
At tap on pump discharge nozzle (A) with the
pump “off”:
_______ psi x 2.31 = ___________ Ft.
READING #3:
At tap on top of the discharge check valve (B) with
pump “off”:
_______ psi x 2.31 = ___________ Ft.
Now determine your Static and Total
Dynamic Head.
STATIC HEAD (Ft) =
TOTAL DYNAMIC HEAD (TDH) =
Determining Flow
Measure the wet well to find the volume of liquid between “on” and “off” levels.
“On” and “Off” levels may be determined by measuring down from the top of the wet well with a tape
measure during a pumping cycle, or, for underground pump stations, by using the clear plastic tubing
attached to the standby pump’s priming petcock, as described in the station initial operating instructions
for setting the level control system. If the station is fitted with a reliable wet well level gauge, it may be
used to obtain this measurement.
On Level
Off Level
H = ___
If the wet well is CYLINDRICAL, multiply the
height of the operating range (in feet) times the
diameter of the wet well (in feet) squared, times
0.785 times 7.48 to get the operating volume in
gallons.
H x D 2 x 0.785 x 7.48 = Operating Vol. (gal.)
If the wet well is RECTANGULAR, multiply the
length of the wet well (in feet) times its width (in
feet) times the height of the operating range (in
feet) times 7.48 to get the operating volume in
gallons.
L x W x H x 7.48 = Operating Vol. (gal.)
CYLINDRICAL Operating Volume =
RECTANGULAR Operating Volume =
_____ x _____ x _____ x 7.48 = _____ Gal.
(Height) (Diameter) (Volume) (Length) (Width) (Height)
(Volume)
NOTE: If the wet well is irregular in shape or if the fillet slope in the bottom extends into the operating
range, it will be necessary to modify the volume calculation to get the actual operating volume.
Time the operating cycle of one pump (Try to do this during a period of fairly constant flow into the wet well.)
Pump “On” = _______ Seconds/60 = _______ Minutes (Time to pump the wet well Down)
Pump “Off” = _______ Seconds/60 = _______ Minutes (Time for wet well to refill)
Calculate the Pumping Rate (Using Operating Volume in gallons and times in minutes)
Operating Volume divided by “On” time gives the pumping rate, not counting the inflow to the Wet Well.
Operating Volume divided by “Off” time gives the inflow rate, so add them together.
Pumping Rate (GPM) = [Operating Volume / “On” Time] + [Operating Volume / “Off” Time]
Replacing Volute Gaskets
Note how many volute gaskets you remove when taking
apart your rotating assembly. You will need to reinstall the
same number and thickness to prevent rubbing during
pump operation. Before turning your pump back to full
operation, bump the motor to see if you hear any rubbing
and to check for correct motor rotation. If there is rubbing,
you will need to add more volute gaskets. If the rotation is
incorrect, rewire it for correct rotation.
Double Mechanical Seal
Replacement Parts Kit
Just like its single seal little brother, the DAMTITE ®
Double Mechanical Seal was designed to have the
longest seal life of any in the industry. Used on
Smith & Loveless flooded suction pumps found on
Custom Series and CAPSULAR ® Underground
Pump Stations, it comes in three sizes, which is
dependent upon the shaft size.
PARTS TIP: Replace the Seal Housing Gasket or Quad
Ring (see below), Volute Gasket (see pg 19) and Impeller Bolt
(see pg 8) whenever a rotating assembly is removed.
Pump Station
Humidistat
The Smith & Loveless
Humidistat is crucial
for controlling the
humidity in your
underground pump
station. You easily set
the level of desired
humidity with the
convenient dial switch
4L215
and the 4L215
Humidistat will
operate the dehumidifier. Depending
upon the reading of the pump station’s
humidity level in relation to the humidity
setting you turn the dial, the humidistat
will control the humidity level in your
pump station. It handles relative humidity
0 to 70%.
Each time the mechanical seal is replaced, S&L recommends
the Seal Housing Gasket or Quad Ring also be replaced.
PARTS TIP: Determining whether to use the flat
Gasket or the Quad Ring. The older Seal Housing
has a flat surface and uses the flat Gasket for both
the Single and Double seal. The newer Seal
Housing has a groove and it can use either the flat Gasket or
the Quad Ring; however, Smith & Loveless recommends the
Quad Ring.
Is Your Pump Really Pumping?
The Pump Flow Sensor is a cost effective way to keep
you advised if your pump is really pumping.
The Smith & Loveless Pump Flow Sensor detects even
the smallest check valve arm deflections. If your pump is called
to pump and the check valve doesn’t open, it sends a signal
back to the control panel of pump failure. For more information
see page 23 of this catalog.
Sonic Start Priming System
— eliminates electrodes & electrode cleaning
The Sonic Start Priming System is stateof-the-art
prime sensing technology. Using
frequency differential, the Sonic Start
Prime Sensing System dramatically changes
the way Smith & Loveless’ Vacuum Primed
Pumps sense prime. Even with grease
buildup on the Sonic Start probe, it still
continues to accurately monitor the frequency
and detect frequency changes. Additionally,
the Sonic Start does not require routine
cleaning like the electrodes.
For Smith & Loveless’ state-of-the-art prime
sensing system, order Sonic Start Kit
H87A391A or H87A391B seen below. All of
the kits and individual components on these
Seal Replacement Parts Kit
The Smith & Loveless DAMTITE ® Single Mechanical Seal is used
on all Smith & Loveless vacuum primed pumps found on the Classic
Recessed and Wet Well Mounted Pump Station, FORMULA X ® and
PISTA ® Turbo Grit Pump.
Specifically designed by Smith & Loveless for the Smith & Loveless
pump. With more than 60,000 seals in service today, Senior R&D
Engineer Frank Weis originally designed the seal to last more than
7 years and it has been proven to have one of the longest life-cycles
of any mechanical seal in the industry. It is also easy to change with
commonly found tools 3 wedges, a hammer and a socket wrench.
Don’t be caught without a spare seal. Order one today!
PARTS TIP: It is recommended to replace the Seal Housing Gasket
or Quad Ring (see below) and the Volute Gasket (see pg 19 )
whenever a rotating assembly is removed.
has a flat surface and uses the flat Gasket for both
the Single and Double seal. The newer Seal
Hood Fixes
Thousands of Smith & Loveless’
Classic Wet Well Mounted Pump
Stations have now been installed in
the field for more than 15 years.
If your hinges are starting to tear loose or have already torn loose from the lip of the
fiberglass hood, you can now fix it without having to buy an entirely new hood. The new
Continuous Hinge/Backing Bar Retrofit Kit (seen above) installs right over the old
holes - dramatically extending the life of your hood.
The new S&L Continuous Hinge/Backing Bar Retrofit Kit is the
ideal way to extend the life of your hood lip where the hinge bolts to it.
This solid extruded aluminum backing bar runs the full length of the
hood, providing support for the new solid stainless steel continuous
hinges. These rugged, heavy-duty hinges mount to the base side
plate and the lip of the hood.
The Continuous Hinge/Backing Bar Retrofit Kit comes in a 49” length
and 62” length. The only thing you need to know is the length of your
hood lip that your existing hinges are now installed. Many of Smith &
Loveless’ Representatives also provide installation services of these
Retrofit Kits. Call today to find out more.
The 49” Kit includes: a 49” backing bar, two continuous hinges, mounting
hardware and step-by-step 3-D illustrated installation instructions.
The 62” Kit includes: a 62” backing bar, three continuous hinges, mounting
hardware and step-by-step 3-D installation instructions.
Over this time, some of the hoods
have been damaged in one form or
another at the hinge area. The
Continuous Hinge/Backing Bar
Retrofit Kit can bring your 15+ year
old hood back to life for a fraction of
the cost of a replacement hood. The
backing bar installs along the full
length of the fiberglass hood lip. It
fully covers the old hinge points and
adds all of the structural support
required for the rugged, stainless
steel continuous hinges.
Check out the fiberglass around your
hood’s hinges. If it is beginning to
show its age, your hood might be a
good candidate for a Continuous
Hinge/Backing Bar Retrofit Kit seen
on this page.
60-Day Money Back Offer
Smith & Loveless is so confident in the new X-PELLER ® impeller, that
it is offering a 60-day money back offer* on its retrofit X-PELLER ® .
The fully trimmable X-PELLER ® was specifically designed for low
flow pumping conditions (0 to 500 GPM) in 4” vacuum primed and 4”
flooded suction pumps. In numerous field tests, it was successfully
proven that the X-PELLER ® effectively expels high volumes of
trash, including stringy materials, and rags due to its mono-port
design. Retrofit with confidence by using the X-PELLER ® 60-day
money back offer*.
X-PELLER ® Impeller. Call the factory to select the specific size when
* 60-day money back X-PELLER ®
Open
Season
With the summer
heat, it is important to
make sure the
louvers are open.
Failure to do so can
cause excessive
heat buildup inside the station. This triggers
your ventilation blower to operate more
frequently to lower the temperature inside the
station, thus shortening the life of your
ventilation blower. Additionally, excess heat
causes premature motor life and frequently
leads to nuisance tripping of the overload coils.
So check to make sure your louvers are open
today.
The sun, while being the
center of our universe, can
create problems for some of
today’s modern technology.
Unfortunately, most outdoor
equipment is designed with
no consideration as to its
direction in relation to the sun.
The sun can make it difficult
to read any Control Panel’s
MMI or HMI. The Shade
Aide is an effective instant
shade — no matter which
direction the sun is shining or
time of day.
Ideal for any HMI display with
a frame size of up to 7” high x
9.5” wide.
Another benefit is the fact the
Shade Aide offers a
protective cover for the
screen. Display screens are
not cheap.
Finally, we all know there are
times when locking out a
screen for one reason or
another is desired. The
Shade Aide is lockable.
Just one more great feature.
Is Your Pump Really Pumping?
The Pump Flow Sensor is a cost effective way to keep you advised.
This Kit Includes Everything For A 2-Pump Station
H87A376
No matter what angle your check valve
is, the Smith & Loveless Pump Flow
Sensor bolts on and adjusts to that
angle. It senses even the smallest check
valve arm deflections, preventing many
false pump failure alarms.
Many pump stations don’t have a sensor
installed to verify whether the pump is actually
pumping when it is called to pump. The Smith &
Loveless Pump Flow Sensor alerts the
operator if the pump is not pumping. This
serves as a early warning signal, in advance of
the pump running totally dry. The mounting
bracket was designed to mount on any
manufacturer’s check valve arm.
The Smith & Loveless Pump Flow Sensor
detects even the smallest check valve arm
deflections. If your pump is called to pump and
the check valve doesn’t open, it sends a signal
back to the control panel of pump failure.
Because it can actually sense the smallest
flows, it prevents many false pump failure
alarms other types of sensors send out
because they can’t accurately sense the check
valve deflection on low flows.
S&L PUMP FLOW SENSOR RETROFIT KIT
(Replaces whisker switch)
PART # DESCRIPTION
H87A376 S&L Pump Flow Sensor Retrofit Kit
for Relay Logic
For those who already have a pump flow sensor
installed, low flows can really be a problem. If
you have a low flow pump that creates problems
for your SCADA System, consider the Smith &
Loveless Pump Sensor Retrofit Kit. It senses
even the lowest flows. With many check valve
whisker type limit switches, check valve
deflection on low flows of 80 GPM or less
present problems — especially with 4” piping –
because the check valve movement is very
minimal. The new Smith & Loveless Pump
Sensor detects even the slightest deflection in
the check valve.
