Immersible Wastewater Pump
Why Use Submersibles?
See Video of
I-SERIES Running
Under Water!
Spurred by concerns over the potential of pump station
flooding—whether a dry-pit resides in a flood plain or experiences
the ill-effects of failed mechanical seals and valves—many
cities, engineers and developers often specify submersible
pumps for dry-pit environments. At first glance, the logic seems
reasonable: a “submersible” should theoretically run in the rare
event of a dry-pit flooding. Yet, submersible pumps are specifically
designed for wet pits, hence their name. More than that, the
surrounding wastewater keeps the submerged pump motor
properly cooled in order to maintain reasonable performance.
When submersibles operate in a dry-pit application, they require
extra fixtures and retooling in order to compensate for the lack
of cooling when not submerged—in this case nearly 99.9
percent of the time. This begs the question,
“Why use a ‘submersible’ in a ‘dry’ application?”
When submersibles are applied in dry-pits, the biggest problem
becomes how to keep the submersible pump motor cooled.
The popular method of cooling a dry-pit submersible is applying
a cooling jacket. However, inherent problems in cooling jackets
arise because some require circulating a small volume of the
raw wastewater through the jacket. Sewage particles can
periodically clog the passages in the jacket and prevent it from
cooling the motor properly.
If not properly cooled, heat build-up can cause a variety of
scenarios that may not provide the necessary protection from
flooding. First, overheating can unknowingly and adversely affect
the pump’s moisture detectors. The dry-pit submersible pump
may not run when actually submerged in a flood—the moisture
detectors could fault it out and the pump fails to operate.
Another heat build-up factor concerns the watertight grommets,
located on top of the motor in many submersibles. In nonsubmerged
conditions, the grommets may actually begin to
dry rot, allowing the possibility of water to enter the motor and
cause damage. When the motor fails, the pumps will likely require
major overhaul because of the excessive wear. Not only is this
costly, it also requires downtime while it is pulled out of service
and sent to a service shop for rebuilding. Most service and
maintenance procedures on submersibles cannot be performed
in the field — especially with the exterior cooling jacket that is
required for dry-pits.
I-SERIES Immersible Pumps offer superior
benefits compared to dry-pit submersibles.
I-Series
Immersible Wastewater Pump
Why Use Submersibles? (cont.)
Again the question comes to mind, “Why use a
‘submersible’ in a ‘dry’ application?” In reality, submersibles
are not the most reliable or cost-effective option for
protecting dry-pit applications from flooding events.
Essentially, a dry-pit submersible runs in its optimal
design conditions only 0.1 percent of the time—when it
floods. And that is no guarantee either!
When considering flood protection for dry-pit applications,
specifiers should also consider the life cycle costs
associated with dry-pit submersibles. Dry-pit
submersibles have regular and periodic premiums: service
contracts, overhauls, foreign parts, typically shorter
service life and lower pump efficiencies than other kinds
of pumps. These out-of-pocket expenditures can prove
to be very costly.
I-SERIES Immersible Pumps.
Smith & Loveless is pleased to present a sensible alternative, the Smith & Loveless I-SERIES Immersible Pump.
Unlike a submersible, the I-SERIES Immersible Pump runs optimally 100 percent of the time in dry-pit applications
while providing the base protection necessary for flood events. Incorporating the Smith & Loveless TEFC motor and
specially designed end bell seals at the top and bottom of the motor housing, I-SERIES Pumps allow up to three (3)
weeks of immersion in 30 feet of wastewater. Smith & Loveless’ design moves the grommet away from the top of the
motor where the heat rises, allowing a fan to continuously cool the motor during operation. Additionally, I-SERIES
employs a special motor conduit box located on the side, eliminating expensive terminal boards typically located in
submersibles.
I-SERIES is the latest innovation in the venerable Smith & Loveless Pump line, which is renown for long life-cycles,
ease of maintenance, high pump efficiencies, fewer required parts and minimal maintenance procedures. Operators
can easily perform service like changing the mechanical seal themselves. (The Seal is also known for its impressive
durability and low replacement cost).
Not only are I-SERIES Pumps manufactured in the U.S., but so are its parts—this is unlike many foreign submersibles,
which may have lead times of many weeks or even months. Like other S&L Pumps, flow and head increases for I-
SERIES pumps can be easily accomplished with a mere impeller change.
Specifiers faced with concerns about flood plains and/or mechanical seal or valve failures, should consider pumps
engineered specifically for the task. Weigh the benefits gained with Smith & Loveless I-SERIES Immersible Pumps
verses the drawbacks of incorporating submersibles in dry-pit applications. Not only do I-SERIES Immersible
Pumps present superior life-cycle benefits, but they offer the base protection required in rare flood events. Customers
can count on the experience and excellence gained by Smith & Loveless in tens of thousands of pump installations
and nearly 60 years of engineering and manufacturing. (For more on the operation of I-SERIES Pumps, request
bulletins 630 & 631).
Rising water level trips second float
down. Smith & Loveless
recommends the shutdown option
because at some point, usually
within 24 to 48 hours, the pump
station will need to be dewatered.
By using the pump shutdown
option, it allows the operator to
evaluate whether the cause is
catastrophic, such as a collapsed
suction or discharge pipe, or check
Flooding Immerses Pump Motors
While the Pumps are immersed in the dry-pit, I-SERIES TM Immersible Pump special end bell seals prevent
leakage into the motors for up to 3 weeks up to 30’ of water, protecting the motors from major damage.
Note: Many engineers will specify suction valving, which manually allows field technicians to use the
I-SERIES TM pump to dewater the dry-pit. This saves manhours and additional onsite equipment costs. In
addition, the industry trend is progressing toward “pump around vaults and connections,” which the
I-SERIES TM Pump supports. Consult Smith & Loveless or its local representative for additional assistance.
Replacing Volute Gaskets
Note how many volute gaskets you remove when taking
apart your rotating assembly. You will need to reinstall the
same number and thickness to prevent rubbing during pump
operation. Before turning your pump back to full operation,
bump the motor to see if you hear any rubbing and to check
for correct motor rotation. If there is rubbing, you will need
to add more volute gaskets. If the rotation is incorrect, rewire
it for correct rotation.
Double Mechanical Seal
Replacement Parts Kit
Just like its single seal little brother, the DAMTITE ®
Double Mechanical Seal was designed to have the
longest seal life of any in the industry. Used on
Smith & Loveless flooded suction pumps found on
Custom Series and CAPSULAR ® Underground
Pump Stations, it comes in three sizes, which is
dependent upon the shaft size.
Humidistat
The Smith &
Loveless
Humidistat is
crucial for
controlling the
humidity in your
underground pump
station. You easily
4L215
set the level of
desired humidity
with the convenient dial switch and
the 4L215 Humidistat will operate the
dehumidifier. Depending upon the
reading of the pump station’s
humidity level in relation to the
humidity setting you turn the dial, the
humidistat will control the humidity
level in your pump station. It handles
Sonic Start Priming System
— eliminates electrodes & electrode cleaning
The Sonic Start Priming System is stateof-the-art
prime sensing technology. Using
frequency differential, the Sonic Start
Prime Sensing System dramatically changes
the way Smith & Loveless’ Vacuum Primed
Pumps sense prime. Even with grease
buildup on the Sonic Start probe, it still
continues to accurately monitor the frequency
and detect frequency changes. Additionally,
the Sonic Start does not require routine
cleaning like the electrodes.
Is Your Pump Really Pumping?
The Pump Flow Sensor is a cost effective way to keep you advised.
This Kit Includes Everything For A 2-Pump Station
H87A376
No matter what angle your check valve
is, the Smith & Loveless Pump Flow
Sensor bolts on and adjusts to that
angle. It senses even the smallest check
valve arm deflections, preventing many
false pump failure alarms.
Many pump stations don’t have a sensor
installed to verify whether the pump is actually
pumping when it is called to pump. The Smith &
Loveless Pump Flow Sensor alerts the
operator if the pump is not pumping. This
serves as a early warning signal, in advance of
the pump running totally dry. The mounting
bracket was designed to mount on any
manufacturer’s check valve arm.
The Smith & Loveless Pump Flow Sensor
detects even the smallest check valve arm
deflections. If your pump is called to pump and
the check valve doesn’t open, it sends a signal
back to the control panel of pump failure.
Because it can actually sense the smallest
flows, it prevents many false pump failure
alarms other types of sensors send out
because they can’t accurately sense the check
valve deflection on low flows.
S&L PUMP FLOW SENSOR RETROFIT KIT
(Replaces whisker switch)
PART # DESCRIPTION
H87A376 S&L Pump Flow Sensor Retrofit Kit
for Relay Logic
For those who already have a pump flow sensor
installed, low flows can really be a problem. If
you have a low flow pump that creates problems
for your SCADA System, consider the Smith &
Loveless Pump Sensor Retrofit Kit. It senses
even the lowest flows. With many check valve
whisker type limit switches, check valve
deflection on low flows of 80 GPM or less
present problems — especially with 4” piping –
because the check valve movement is very
minimal. The new Smith & Loveless Pump
Sensor detects even the slightest deflection in
the check valve.
Includes: (1) step-by-step 3-D illustrated Installation
Open
Season
With the summer
heat, it is important to
make sure the
louvers are open.
Failure to do so can
cause excessive
heat buildup inside the station. This triggers
your ventilation blower to operate more
frequently to lower the temperature inside the
station, thus shortening the life of your
ventilation blower. Additionally, excess heat
causes premature motor life and frequently
leads to nuisance tripping of the overload coils.
So check to make sure your louvers are open
today.
