1854: Our Lady of Montserrat Parish in <strong>Salinas</strong>, PR opened in the Diocese of<br />

Puerto Rico.<br />

1924: <strong>The</strong> Diocese of Puerto Rico became the Diocese of San Juan. At the same<br />

time, the new Diocese of <strong>Ponce</strong> was erected from the Diocese of San Juan. Our<br />

Lady of Montserrat Parish became a part of the new Diocese of <strong>Ponce</strong>.<br />

1948: Bishop James E. McManus of <strong>Ponce</strong> <strong>and</strong> Bishop James P. Davis of San Juan<br />

co-founded the Catholic University of Santa Maria in <strong>Ponce</strong>, PR.<br />

1950: <strong>The</strong> name of the university was changed to the Catholic University of<br />

Puerto Rico.<br />

1956: Bishop James E. McManus invited the <strong>Piarist</strong>s from our Aragon Province in<br />

Spain to work in the Diocese of <strong>Ponce</strong>. He asked them to minister at Our Lady of<br />

Montserrat Parish in <strong>Salinas</strong> <strong>and</strong> at the Catholic University of Puerto Rico in<br />

<strong>Ponce</strong>.<br />

1956-1961: Some <strong>Piarist</strong>s served the parish community of Our Lady of Montserrat<br />

Parish. <strong>The</strong>y lived in the church rectory.


1956-1961: Some <strong>Piarist</strong>s taught at the Catholic University of Puerto Rico. <strong>The</strong>y<br />

also helped care for the boarding students <strong>and</strong> lived in the students’ residence<br />

halls.<br />

1960 (November 26): <strong>The</strong> <strong>Piarist</strong> community of <strong>Ponce</strong> was canonically<br />

established.<br />

1961 (January 8): All of the <strong>Piarist</strong>s in <strong>Salinas</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Ponce</strong> moved into a new<br />

residence on the university campus.<br />

1991: With the approval of Pope John Paul II, the name of the university was<br />

changed to the Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto Rico.<br />

2002: Pope John Paul II appointed a <strong>Piarist</strong>, Bishop Felix Lazaro, as the Coadjutor<br />

Bishop of <strong>Ponce</strong>.<br />

2003: Bishop Felix Lazaro, Sch.P. became the Bishop of <strong>Ponce</strong>. In this position, he<br />

also serves at the Gr<strong>and</strong> Chancellor of the Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto<br />

Rico.<br />

2007: <strong>The</strong> <strong>Piarist</strong>s decided to end our working relationship with the university <strong>and</strong><br />

to close the community of <strong>Ponce</strong>. <strong>The</strong> two remaining <strong>Piarist</strong>s moved to our<br />

community in Coto Laurel, PR.<br />
