called ‘Fir Bobs’ because they lived close to<br />

Storeton Pine Woods.<br />

The Storeton quarries, which provided jobs for<br />

the villagers, transported the stone to<br />

Bromborough Pool docks via a tram track which<br />

ran round the outskirts of the parish of Bebington.<br />

The track was built in 1838. On the 1844 Tithe<br />

Map it is shown as Plot 250 R’way (Sir Wm.<br />

Stanley owner and occupier). The sandstone<br />

from these quarries was used in many famous<br />

buildings, as far away as the United States of<br />

America.<br />

When James and Sarah moved <strong>her</strong>e, most of the work in the village was<br />

connected with farming or quarrying. Perhaps t<strong>her</strong>e was a chance of work<br />

for James (hence the move), although we did find Thomas (his elder half<br />

brot<strong>her</strong>) and his wife Emma living <strong>her</strong>e in 1856 when their son Thomas was<br />

born.
