community benefited from the compassionate and lifesaving 

care at Unity and Mercy Hospitals. Whether you 

designated Unity or Mercy Hospital as a beneficiary in 

your will, donated to the expansion of the Emergency 

Departments, attended a special fundraising event, 

volunteered on a committee or provided leadership as 

a Foundation board member, you played a vital role in 

improving the quality of life in our community. That’s what 

the spirit of giving is all about: helping others by sharing 

our gifts of time, talent and treasure. 

Over the past year the Emergency Departments 

completed Phase I of their expansion and remodeling. 

The spaces now have private patient rooms, a new 

control/triage area and new equipment. Phase II is now 

underway to include additional patient rooms, control/ 

triage areas, mental health suites, isolation rooms and 

remodeled waiting areas. This allows for the staff to treat 

more emergency and trauma patients than ever before. 

The Foundation has raised over $475,000 toward this 

expansion and remodeling. 

This annual report is dedicated to you—our donors—who 

believe in our mission of directing philanthropic gifts 

to innovative programs, life-saving equipment, and 

humanitarian funds which make our community healthier 

in body, mind and spirit. Your donations in 2007 did just 

that. These pages will show you some of the ways you

One special group of donors to the Foundation 

was supporting Mercy Hospital before it even 

opened: Mercy Hospital was dedicated in 

February 1965; however, the first Auxilians 

began organizing in support of the Hospital 

in early 1964. 

Mercy Hospital Auxiliary was chartered on July 

14, 1964, eight months before the hospital 

opened its doors. Its objectives, which continue 

today, are to render a cheery and helpful service 

in the hospital, to create good will in the hospital 

and the community and to raise funds for 

special hospital needs. Since those early days, 

the Auxiliary has operated the Mercy Hospital 

Gift Shop and the Coffee Shop to support their 

philanthropic endeavors. 

The Mercy Hospital Auxiliary has donated more 

than $600,000 to the Foundation in support of 

Hospital programs and services since it began 

in 1964. Examples of their significant program 

support include “The Heart of the Community” 

Cardiovascular Capital Campaign, the patient 

emergency fund, the Hospital’s pediatric 

Mercy Hospital Auxiliary Board of Directors

year of existence, it donated $3,376, contributed 

13,314 volunteer hours and voted to sponsor 

nursing students with a scholarship program.

first year and has continued to give generously to 

deserving students in the community ever since.

AUXILIARY + VOLUNTEER SERVICES 

Auxiliary GIVING GIFTS OF TIME & TALENT 

Mercy Hospital 

In 2007 over 550 Mercy Hospital volunteers 

donated 45,037 hours in support of the 

hospital and community. New last year was 

the partnership with Anoka County and District 

15 in placing volunteers to benefit Mercy 

while providing job skills and career building 

experiences for individuals. The Mercy Hospital 

Auxiliary was proud to contribute more than 

$113,000 towards hospital projects and 

programs, as well as $21,000 in scholarships 

to area teens and nursing students. 

Funds for these programs are raised by the 

Auxiliary Coffee Shop and Gift Shop in addition 

to various fundraisers held throughout the 

year. Volunteer Services and the Auxiliary 

support 35 hospital service areas, assisting 

patients, visitors, and staff in areas such as 

the information desk, surgical waiting, and 

emergency department.

Unity Hospital 

United by their commitment to our 

community and to the mission of Unity 

Hospital, the members of the Unity Hospital 

Auxiliary and Volunteer Program have 

generously given their time and talents in 

over 35 different service areas of the hospital. 

In 2007, this group of over 415 dedicated 

women, men and teens contributed over 

46,650 hours of volunteer service. 

In addition, through funds raised by the 

operation of the Unique Gift Shop as well 

as various fundraisers held throughout the 

year, the Unity Hospital Auxiliary was able 

to support the hospital through innovative 

programs and community partnerships. 

In 2007 over $107,000 was given to four 

worthwhile causes: scholarships to Anoka 

Ramsey Community College, scholarships 

to Unity employees for continuing education 

in healthcare, community events and the 

Auxiliary Wish List Program which grant funds 

for hospital equipment and supplies that 

assist in the support and care of patients 

and their families.

Retirement 

After more than 37 

years of service,

Hospitals said 

good-bye to a 

dear friend, Gary 

Alberts. Gary left a 

tremendous legacy 

of accomplishments, 

providing leadership 

for a variety of 

hospital departments 

and functions for 

many years. In 

addition, Gary has 

been the face of 

Mercy and Unity 

Hospitals to our 

communities for 

more than three 

decades. Fortunately 

for us, he will 

continue to serve on 

the board of Mercy 

& Unity Hospitals 

Foundation. 

3M Championship 

The 3M Championship was held 

on July 30-August 5 with the 

Tournament Players Club Twin 

Cities in Blaine serving as 

the tournament venue. This 

year’s event had a full field of 

Champions Tour professional 

golfers – the final leader board 

included winner D. A. Weibring, 

Jay Haas, John Harris, Tom 

Jenkins, Jim Thorpe, Chip Beck 

and Craig Stadler. During the 

Saturday and Sunday Greats of 

Golf Challenge, legends such 

as Chi Chi Rodriguez, Arnold 

Palmer, Lee Trevino and others 

entertained the crowd with their 

skills and showmanship. Over 

115,000 attended the tournament 

this year. 

Mercy & Unity Hospitals 

Foundation was one of the major 

beneficiaries of this year’s event 

and received over $160,000 for 

renovation and expansion of 

the Emergency Departments. 

Other major beneficiaries include 

Abbott Northwestern and United 

Hospitals. The tournament has 

donated over $13 million to charity 

since 1993, making it one of the 

largest contributions to charity for 

a Champions Tour event.

held July 14-20, 2008 at the TPC.

Crystal Ball 2007 

On April 14th, 2007 guests were taken 

“Up, Up & Away” at this year’s Crystal Ball. 

North Country, featuring Elizabeth Keeney, 

former Minnesota Idol winner, provided the 

entertainment. Everyone enjoyed an evening of 

dinner, entertainment, silent and live auctions, 

and special activities. Competition for the live 

auction was at its best and competitive bidding 

for the many items was keen. 

This year’s event proceeds were used to 

enhance the services provided through the 

Mercy and Unity Hospitals’ Emergency 

Departments. At Unity Hospital, the proceeds 

will be used for expansion and renovation of 

the department. At Mercy Hospital, Crystal Ball 

funds will be used to purchase much needed 

equipment and provide environmental changes 

to improve patient privacy. A number of items 

will be purchased to improve the Emergency 

Department experience for our youngest 

patients and visitors at each site. 

Lead sponsors included Emergency Physician 

Professionals Association (EPPA), Connexus 

Energy, Metropolitan Cardiology Consultants, 

Suburban Radiologic Consultants, 3M 

Championship, Abbott Northwestern Hospital, 

Timco Construction, Inc. and more than 45 

other sponsors. 

2007 GOLF 

CLASSIC 

The July 23rd Golf Classic at Bunker 

Hills Golf Course was another huge 

success! Those who played the 

course enjoyed the camaraderie of 

other golfers and the various course 

contests. The funds raised from this 

event were used to help support 

the needs of the Mercy and Unity 

Hospitals’ Emergency Departments 

through the purchasing of equipment 

upgrades, supporting changes to 

improve patient flow, increasing 

staff efficiency and providing 

patient privacy all of which allow for 

better care for the residents in our 

communities. After a day on the 

course, dinner, beverages and awards 

were shared in the clubhouse. 

Attendance this year included 32 

teams of golfers. 

The Classic title sponsor was 

Timco Construction, Inc., who 

has generously served as the 

title sponsor each year since the 

tournament began. Other major 

sponsors included NewMech 

Companies, Inc., Wasche Commercial 

Finishes, Inc. and PSD LLC.

Sue Fischer Golf Tournament 

The 4th Annual Sue 

Fischer Scholarship for 

Nursing Excellence Golf 

Tournament was held 

on September 20, 2007 

at Majestic Oaks Golf 

Club. The Sue Fischer 

Scholarship Endowment 

Fund was established in 

memory of the late Sue 

Fischer in honor of her 

37 years of dedicated 

service to patients at Unity Hospital and the nursing 

profession. Because education was so important to Sue, 

a fund was established in her name in the Mercy & Unity 

Hospitals Foundation. To date, the Foundation and Fischer 

family have awarded eight scholarships to deserving 

students. 

This year there were over 160 golfers and guests who 

participated in this celebration of life. The event raised 

over $35,000 for the endowment fund in support of 

nursing scholarships. 

7th Annual 

Women’s Day 

on the Links 

The 7th Annual Women’s 

Day on the Links was held 

on June 5, 2007 at the 

Tournament Players Club 

(TPC) of the Twin Cities. 

The event had 144 women 

golfers in attendance 

and raised more than 

$40,000.00. 

All proceeds from this 

event were used to support 

the emergency needs of 

patients who have cancer. 

Patients who suffer from 

this debilitating disease 

often are unable to work for 

extended periods of time 

and find themselves in very 

difficult situations. This fund 

has been used to pay for 

rent, medical co-payments, 

prescription medications, 

utility bills and other living 

expenses that patients have. 

2nd Annual 

Madison & Parker 

Thurner Twinkling 

Angels Golf 

Tournament 

The 2nd Annual Madison & Parker 

Thurner Twinkling Angels Golf 

Tournament was held on May 24, 2007, 

at Majestic Oaks Golf Course in Ham 

Lake. 

The Blaine Peewee A Hockey Team “Shoot 

for the Stars” during a U of M Gopher 

Hockey Game. Proceeds from the shoot out 

were donated to the Twinkling Angels fund. 

The Twinkling Angels Fund was established 

by Debbie and Frank Thurner, the parents of 

Madison and Parker Thurner, who on June 4, 

2002, died tragically along with another child 

when the van they were riding in caught fire. 

A large portion of the funds are being used 

to create an endowment which will allow 

Madison and Parker’s legacy to continue 

to help children who are in need in our 

communities forever. 

Debbie and Frank Thurner established this 

fund to provide comfort and support to 

members of our community in numerous 

ways. The fund provides housing assistance 

to families experiencing financial duress 

because of a child’s medical care, comfort 

items for Mercy & Unity Hospitals’ pediatric 

rooms, grave markers for children at 

Morningside Memorial Gardens, scholarships 

for children with burns to attend burn camps 

and public safety items and equipment for 

Anoka County police and fire departments. 

The event was successful with over 180 

golfers and guests in attendance at the 

dinner. After the tournament, and evening of 

activities including a delicious dinner, live and 

silent auctions and awards and prizes. The 

tournament netted more than $75,000 

in proceeds.

Community Giving 

Campaign 

“We help give hope by caring for those in need” 

was the theme for this year’s employee giving 

campaign. 

Employees of the Hospitals were invited to 

consider various giving opportunities. Choices 

included support for the Mercy & Unity Hospitals 

Foundation for our family of clinical programs and 

services, the Caring for Co-Workers Fund and 

scholarship funds. Employees also had the option 

of supporting the United Way or other not-for-profit 

organizations through the campaign. An additional 

option this year was giving a donation to the 35W 

Bridge Fund. 

The 2007 campaign raised more that $112,000 

from 380 donors. 

Holiday Food 

and Toy Drive 

With snow in the air and festive 

holiday trimmings decking the 

halls, the employees, medical 

staff and volunteers again this 

year reached deep into their hearts 

to provide toys, hats and mittens, 

and food for children in need in 

our communities. More than 60 

large boxes of toys and clothing 

and over half a ton of food were 

collected throughout November 

to mid-December. The toy and 

food drives are conducted through 

the Foundation to benefit Southern 

Anoka County Community 

Assistance Program through 

donations from Unity Hospital 

and Toys for Joy through donations 

from Mercy Hospital. These 

charities distribute the toys and 

foods to families in need in 

Anoka County. 

Assisting those in need in our 

communities has been important 

to Mercy and Unity Hospitals’ 

employees, volunteers and 

medical staff. Their generosity 

reflects their caring spirits. 

Take Heart ANOKA COUNTY 

On Thursday night, December 

13, Lindsey Paradise was in 

the stands watching her Fridley 

High School basketball team 

playing a game. A referee 

collapsed on the basketball 

court. At that moment, Lindsey, 

who is 16, had looked away 

from the game when she heard 

her mother gasp and saw the 

official, Dale Wakasugi, 49, on 

the floor, motionless. Suddenly 

the game came to a halt. 

Lindsey flew from the stands 

and slid on her knees right up 

to him,” her twin sister, Alyssa, 

said. “Just by looking at her, 

you could tell she was in a 

zone.” She began administering 

cardio-pulmonary resuscitation 

(CPR) to Dale. After four rounds 

of CPR didn’t work, Lindsey 

had a spectator grab the 

automated external defibrillator 

(AED) hanging on a nearby wall. 

Lindsey, who had just received 

training the previous month on 

how to operate a defibrillator 

through the Fridley Police Youth 

Explorer Program, said that 

instinct took over. Alyssa said 

the gym was so quiet she could 

hear the defibrillator’s voice 

prompts echoing throughout 

the facility. Lindsey and another 

good Samaritan administered 

the shock and Dale regained a 

pulse. “I saw his chest going up 

and down,” Lindsey said. “We 

were talking to him, saying, 

‘Keep breathing, Dale,’ and we 

were trying to comfort him.” 

First responders arrived, taking 

Dale to Unity Hospital and 

then later to Mercy Hospital 

for surgery. The emergency 

medical technician said that it 

was Lindsey’s quick action that 

saved Dale’s life. 

This story is illustrative of a 

new initiative adopted by Mercy 

& Unity Hospitals Foundation 

LOOKING FORWARD TO 2008 

on behalf of our communities. 

Anoka County has been 

chosen as one of four national 

demonstration sites for the 

“Take Heart America” program. 

Each year over 300 people 

suffer from sudden cardiac 

arrest (SCA) in Anoka County 

and the surrounding area. The 

current survival rate for SCA 

is 5%. The goal of this ground 

breaking program is to more 

than quadruple the survival 

rate from sudden cardiac arrest 

by providing widespread CPR 

training and public education, 

placing AEDs and other 

automated CPR devices in the 

community, improving first 

responders’ CPR techniques 

and deployment of devices, 

and optimizing hospital care 

for cardiac arrest patients. The 

goal of Mercy & Unity Hospitals 

Foundation is to help expand 

the “Take Heart America” 

program beyond the confines 

of Anoka County to all of our 

service area and more. We 

want to make Lindsey’s story 

your story too.

Reflections 

on 2007 

It is hard to believe that I have 

already completed my first 

year as director of Planned 

Giving for the Mercy & Unity 

Hospitals Foundation. It has 

been a privilege and an honor 

to serve in this capacity. 

As a member of the 

Foundation staff, I have 

personally witnessed our 

supporter’s donations 

benefiting the community. 

Charitable giving, through a 

planned gift, is very important 

to Mercy and Unity Hospitals. 

Planned gifts provide the 

dollars which allow us to 

maintain quality patient care, 

make capital improvements 

and invest in technology 

advancements. 

My year started with a 

discussion at the Foundation’s 

March board meeting. During 

the meeting, I laid out how 

working with friends and 

donors to the Mercy & Unity 

Hospitals Foundation to 

achieve their legacy goals is 

the most satisfying way to 

raise funds for the hospitals. 

Every planned giving donor 

is exceptional because they 

decide how they want to be 

remembered and what assets 

will be used to achieve their 

philanthropic goals. Whether 

the gift is through a will, trust, 

a beneficiary of a life insurance 

policy, an IRA or a charitable 

gift annuity, including the 

Foundation in these plans will 

enhance the outstanding care 

provided at Mercy and Unity 

Hospitals. 

In May I spoke at the Mercy 

and Unity Auxiliary meetings 

on the importance of preparing 

and executing a will, power 

of attorney and health care 

directive. Although everyone 

has varying needs when it 

comes to estate documents, 

I believe everyone should have 

these three documents in 

their personal papers. If you 

have any questions, please 

give me a call and I would be 

happy to give you a five-minute 

summary of the information I 

shared that day. 

Finally, the later part of the year 

found me working with Julie 

Nelson Gotham on a brochure 

that you will be receiving 

soon, detailing the critical 

investments that Mercy and 

Unity Hospitals have made 

with your charitable support, 

and outlining the benefits of 

making a planned gift. The 

brochure has a self-mailer 

that will allow you to request 

additional information or let 

us know that you have already 

taken steps to include Mercy & 

Unity Hospitals Foundation in 

your estate plans. 

I look forward to another great

when I visit with members of 

the community to discuss a
