SPECIAL EVENTS - 6 - Crystal Ball 2007 On April 14th, 2007 guests were taken “Up, Up & Away” at this year’s Crystal Ball. North Country, featuring Elizabeth Keeney, former Minnesota Idol winner, provided the entertainment. Everyone enjoyed an evening of dinner, entertainment, silent and live auctions, and special activities. Competition for the live auction was at its best and competitive bidding for the many items was keen. This year’s event proceeds were used to enhance the services provided through the Mercy and Unity Hospitals’ Emergency Departments. At Unity Hospital, the proceeds will be used for expansion and renovation of the department. At Mercy Hospital, Crystal Ball funds will be used to purchase much needed equipment and provide environmental changes to improve patient privacy. A number of items will be purchased to improve the Emergency Department experience for our youngest patients and visitors at each site. Lead sponsors included Emergency Physician Professionals Association (EPPA), Connexus Energy, Metropolitan Cardiology Consultants, Suburban Radiologic Consultants, 3M Championship, Abbott Northwestern Hospital, Timco Construction, Inc. and more than 45 other sponsors. 2007 GOLF CLASSIC The July 23rd Golf Classic at Bunker Hills Golf Course was another huge success! Those who played the course enjoyed the camaraderie of other golfers and the various course contests. The funds raised from this event were used to help support the needs of the Mercy and Unity Hospitals’ Emergency Departments through the purchasing of equipment upgrades, supporting changes to improve patient flow, increasing staff efficiency and providing patient privacy all of which allow for better care for the residents in our communities. After a day on the course, dinner, beverages and awards were shared in the clubhouse. Attendance this year included 32 teams of golfers. The Classic title sponsor was Timco Construction, Inc., who has generously served as the title sponsor each year since the tournament began. Other major sponsors included NewMech Companies, Inc., Wasche Commercial Finishes, Inc. and PSD LLC. “I have a tip that can take five strokes off anyone’s golf game: it’s called an eraser.” ~Arnold Palmer SPECIAL EVENTS - 7 -
SPECIAL EVENTS SPECIAL EVENTS - 8 - 4th Annual Sue Fischer Golf Tournament The 4th Annual Sue Fischer Scholarship for Nursing Excellence Golf Tournament was held on September 20, 2007 at Majestic Oaks Golf Club. The Sue Fischer Scholarship Endowment Fund was established in memory of the late Sue Fischer in honor of her 37 years of dedicated service to patients at Unity Hospital and the nursing profession. Because education was so important to Sue, a fund was established in her name in the Mercy & Unity Hospitals Foundation. To date, the Foundation and Fischer family have awarded eight scholarships to deserving students. This year there were over 160 golfers and guests who participated in this celebration of life. The event raised over $35,000 for the endowment fund in support of nursing scholarships. 7th Annual Women’s Day on the Links The 7th Annual Women’s Day on the Links was held on June 5, 2007 at the Tournament Players Club (TPC) of the Twin Cities. The event had 144 women golfers in attendance and raised more than $40,000.00. All proceeds from this event were used to support the emergency needs of patients who have cancer. Patients who suffer from this debilitating disease often are unable to work for extended periods of time and find themselves in very difficult situations. This fund has been used to pay for rent, medical co-payments, prescription medications, utility bills and other living expenses that patients have. 2nd Annual Madison & Parker Thurner Twinkling Angels Golf Tournament The 2nd Annual Madison & Parker Thurner Twinkling Angels Golf Tournament was held on May 24, 2007, at Majestic Oaks Golf Course in Ham Lake. The Blaine Peewee A Hockey Team “Shoot for the Stars” during a U of M Gopher Hockey Game. Proceeds from the shoot out were donated to the Twinkling Angels fund. The Twinkling Angels Fund was established by Debbie and Frank Thurner, the parents of Madison and Parker Thurner, who on June 4, 2002, died tragically along with another child when the van they were riding in caught fire. A large portion of the funds are being used to create an endowment which will allow Madison and Parker’s legacy to continue to help children who are in need in our communities forever. Debbie and Frank Thurner established this fund to provide comfort and support to members of our community in numerous ways. The fund provides housing assistance to families experiencing financial duress because of a child’s medical care, comfort items for Mercy & Unity Hospitals’ pediatric rooms, grave markers for children at Morningside Memorial Gardens, scholarships for children with burns to attend burn camps and public safety items and equipment for Anoka County police and fire departments. The event was successful with over 180 golfers and guests in attendance at the dinner. After the tournament, and evening of activities including a delicious dinner, live and silent auctions and awards and prizes. The tournament netted more than $75,000 in proceeds.
