The latest patient to receive critical heart surgery at LeBonheur Children’s Hospital
via the Gif t of Life program is 17-year-old Habib Osami, who was accompanied
by his sister, Valbona, 20. They are from Kosova (the old Albania). Habib
had been on a waiting list for some five years.
Being so far from home would be traumatic to most of us, but volunteers from
the Olive Branch Rotary Club, under the leadership of Stephanie Lawson, made
them feel right at home.
The surgery was a tremendous success. Doctors had feared that since Habib was
older, there might be some other damage that would linger. However, this turned
out not to be the case. Doctors say Habib should recover fully.
D6800 clubs urged to use DACdb
DACdb is described as the District and Club database that
now has something for everyone. All District 6800 clubs are
being encouraged to use DACdb, which is free for our clubs
to use. It’s already up, it’s good, and features a robust, high
performance, on-line SQL database, with privacy and security
built in!
IMPRESSIVE GROUP OF DG & ALUMS - While visiting
the Rotary Club of Memphis East, current District
Governor Tommy White (center) visited with two distinguished
Past District Governors from that club.
They are King Rogers, (2008-2009) (left) and Marty
Petrusek (right), (2012-2013).
With DACdb, club secretaries are able to submit their
Monthly Attendance data (or, in a
single mouse click, if they are using
Weekly Attendance module, now with
“bar code” scanning, and BANKED
MakeUps); update their club’s meeting
location and meeting times; maintain their membership roster
(new members, changes, and terminations), and print
name badges or club directories (with members’ photos). Also,
DACdb can print a Rotary Foundation transmittal report
for your annual giving and sustaining member contributions.
In addition, clubs can use the on-line calendar to publish
their meetings, events, and fund raisers, with districtwide
distribution. And, use PMAIL to send personalized
email, individually addressed, to every member in just two
clicks. Also, there is a DUES & INVOICING module for
clubs, with the option for members to pay their dues on-line
with a credit card.
to attend. Take a look for yourself and “like it,” if you will!

When someone asks, “What does your Rotary club do?”
How do you respond?
By Jim Buffington
Inevitably, someone at some time will ask a member of your club just what your Rotary club does - do you support
community activities or organizations, do you sell light bulbs or brooms? And, just as inevitably,
many of us are unable to respond with a satisfactory answer. For that reason, I drew up
the following information a few years ago for the Aberdeen (Mississippi) Rotary Club after one
of our members expressed the belief that we “don’t do anything.” Ours is a small club of 44
members, so larger clubs with more resources of one kind or another probably are involved in
more projects. Your club might want to have the secretary-treasurer or someone else with
knowledge of just what your club is about, draw up a similar document just so the information will be at hand when
the need arises. By the way, this is good information to give prospective or new embers:
“The club promotes education and the future success of our youth annually by giving three scholarships of $500 each to graduating seniors
at Aberdeen High School, Hamilton High School and Oak Hill Academy.
Annual recognition is given to top scholars in ninth through twelfth grades at the above three schools, including certificates of
recognition and brass medals for four‐year recipients.
Also in furtherance of education, each year the club presents personal dictionaries to all third grade students in Aberdeen, Hamilton, and
Oak Hill Academy.
Each year the club sends two or three area high school juniors to the District 6800 Rotary Youth Leadership Conference, an internationally
recognized program that helps prepare youth for leadership roles in the future.
Aberdeen Rotary sponsors and maintains a decorative garden at the intersection of Commerce and Meridian Streets, the main intersection
in downtown Aberdeen, as a community beautification project.
The club gives $1000 or $2000 to The Rotary Foundation each year. These funds help to eliminate polio in the world, provide clean water
for those who live in areas where cholera runs rampant because of the lack of clean water, and many more such beneficial projects.
The club sponsors and staffs Aberdeen’s annual Christmas parade.
Two blood drives per year are sponsored by the Aberdeen club, in conjunction with United Blood Services, as a community project.”
The District 6800 Newsletter strives to includes photos and information about all Rotary clubs in the district.
PLEASE let us know about your club and its activities in order that we can let the other clubs know what you
are doing. Please send your information to jim@jimbuffington.com
