how were you introduced to wine?
The first experience I had with wine was in 1970-71 in California.
My brother and sister-in-law lived in Sacramento and my wife and I
travelled with them to Napa Valley and the Sebastiani winery. This was
before a modern tasting room was built; we tasted wine around wooden
tasting barrels. It was very low-key and from then on we were hooked.
What are your favorite varietals and why?
We really enjoy California wines – the quality and the fruit-forward
varietals are well-represented. I enjoy Cabernet Sauvignon and
Petite Sirah.
What do you enjoy most about the merriam merlot?
Initially when I tasted it, it was very subtle. I let the bottle sit open for
two to three hours prior to dinner, then tried it again. It showed a little
more fruit and the bold reds were beginning to manifest on the palate.
The tannins and fruits were starting to balance. I took half of the bottle
and put it in a decanter. The Merlot has a good backbone and character
from Cabernet and Cabernet Franc grapes; it has a nice, intense color.
We enjoyed it first with pork pie, which was an interesting combination.
I finished the rest of it with a steak. It went well with both meals.
Would you buy this wine again? Why?
I would indeed buy it again. The wine I tasted was a 2005 vintage so
it had some age to it, it’s mellowed and settled a bit. It’s a nice red wine
for the value. I think it’d be an excellent go-to red wine for any meat,
vegetable or pasta dish. It’s not a heavy wine so you can drink it with a
lot of dishes. It’s very drinkable.
What are some of your interests other than wine?
I’m an avid woodworker and furniture maker, and I do some silversmithing
and metalworking. We also travel and have visited wine regions in
California, Italy and South America. We really enjoy California wines
and we spend a lot of time in Napa. We’re planning a trip to southeast
Washington this spring to visit wineries there for a week.
