canadian club classic 12
Popular in late 19th century gentlemen’s clubs of the U.S. and
Canada, and once known as “Club Whisky,” Canadian Club is
among the most recognized whiskies in the world (the word
“Canadian” was added to the label in 1889, distinguishing
Hiram Walker’s recipe from Scotch, Irish and U.S. whiskies).
Walker pioneered the barrel blending process for Canadian
Club, mixing the components of the final whisky as soon as
they’re distilled and then maturing them as a blended spirit
in barrels. Canadian Club Classic 12 has matured
12 years, with subtle notes of spice and vanilla. It can be
served straight but also blends well in cocktails.
crown royal
Known for its bourbon-like qualities, Crown Royal was first
produced in 1939 by Seagram Co. Ltd., in honor of a Canadian
tour by English King George VI and his wife, Queen Elizabeth.
Crown Royal Black is a dark, robust whisky blended at 90
proof, with Crown Royal’s signature smoothness. It has a deep
oak background with dark, sweet, maple notes and a light
vanilla flavor towards the finish.
Crown Royal Cask No. 16 is a blend of 50 different whiskies,
individually aged, blended and rested for an additional
six months in cognac casks made of oak from France’s Limousin
forest in Cognac. Each bottle is marked “16” to represent its
place of origin (16 is the postal code for the Cognac region).
The cask finishing imparts subtle hints of rich, dried fruit,
creating a balanced yet complex taste.
Crown Royal XR Extra Rare is a limited-edition blend –
some of the extra-aged ryes and bourbons in the blend are
over 100 years old – using the remaining batches of whisky
distilled at Seagram’s Waterloo distillery in Ontario (the distillery
burned down in 1993). It has a full-bodied bouquet with a
creamy, rounded finish.
Seagram’s VO Gold
Another brand in the vaunted Seagram portfolio, Seagram’s
VO Gold is a blend of individually selected whiskies, none
less than eight years old. Made from high-quality grains and
pure Canadian water, Seagram’s VO Gold is rich and robust,
with a golden hue, a full-bodied aroma, and a taste of rye.
Spicebox
Distilled and blended in Montreal, Spicebox whisky got its
name from the Prohibition-era habit of marking whisky crates
as “spices” so they could be safely smuggled into the U.S. It’s
a blend of whiskies aged in bourbon barrels for three to six
years and its lower sugar content contributes to its palette
of spice and mellow sweetness, with notes of cinnamon
and nutmeg.
