o Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response OSHA standard<br />

• Permissible Exposure Levels (PEL)<br />

o Allowable level for a hazardous substance in the “breathing” air in which<br />

employees are exposed<br />

• Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)<br />

o Shields or isolates individuals from chemical, physical, and biologic hazards that<br />

may be encountered at a hazardous substance site<br />

o For example, respirators must be worn when employees are exposed to high<br />

levels of hazardous substances in the air<br />

• Physical Health Hazards<br />

o Includes fires, dangerous reactions, and explosions<br />

• Use of MSDS<br />

o See Hazardous Materials Handling/Material Safety Data Sheets<br />

• Workplace Communication Programs<br />

o OSHA requires all employers to provide information to their employees about the<br />

hazardous materials and chemicals to which they are exposed by means of a<br />

hazard communication program<br />

o Workplace communications programs include labels and other forms of warning,<br />

Material Safety Data Sheets, and information and training<br />

o In addition, it is mandatory that distributors transmit OSHA required information<br />

to employers who purchase their products<br />

24. FOD Prevention<br />

<strong>NCATT</strong> Level 1a<br />

Outcome: A successful education or training outcome for this task/subject will produce an<br />

individual who is extremely limited in the performance task of “FOD Prevention”. The<br />

individual will be able to do simple parts of the task. He or she will need to be told or shown<br />

how to do most of the task. In addition, he or she can name parts, tools and simple facts about the<br />

task. The following is a minimum list of terms and task associated with this subject.<br />

Practice FOD Prevention:<br />

Individuals should be able to explain FOD prevention and accountability with reference to the<br />

following terms:<br />

• FOD (Foreign Object Debris)<br />

o Substance, debris, or article alien to a vehicle or system that has invaded the<br />

product and could cause damage<br />

• FOD (Foreign Object Damage)<br />

o Any damage or incident attributed to a foreign object that can be expressed in<br />
