Address the challenges
of climate change
for tomorrow

Time for a change
Without any doubt, climate change is one of the greatest challenges facing the world today, with the threat of global
warming caused by the increasing concentration of greenhouse gases (GHG) in the atmosphere.
The intergovernmental panel on climate change has predicted that if the current trends in emissions continue
during this century, the earth's surface air temperature will increase from around 2 to 6 degrees centigrade.
A GHG gas is basically an atmospheric gas able to absorb
terrestrial infrared.
The most significant ones are:
- Water vapour (H 2
O),
- Carbone dioxyde (CO 2
),
- Methane (CH 4
),
- Nitrous oxide (N 2
O),
- Halogenated hydrocarbons (C x
H y
F z
Cl t
).
72% of the total GHG emitted is carbon dioxide (CO 2
), 18% methane and 9% nitrous oxide. Carbon dioxide emissions
therefore are the most important cause of global warming. They have not only dramatically increased
within the last 50 years, but they are still increasing by almost 3% each year.
High up on the political and corporate agenda, CO 2
management is no longer an option.
Carbon footprint is the total set of all greenhouse gas emissions caused directly
or indirectly by an individual, organisation, product, event, etc. GHG emissions are
converted into tons of CO 2
equivalent, allowing for a common denominator and thus
making equitable measurements and comparisons possible.
Reducing your energy dependence: a strategic decision
Fossil forms of energy are the main sources of GHG emissions generated by human activity.
85% of the world’s primary energy comes from fossil resources (petroleum, coal, gas).
These are finite resources, and prices are rising as they are depleted.

Limiting the overall impact of your activities
To reduce the environmental impact of our design-build and solutions activitie, we are striving to manage more
effectively the CO 2
emissions of our technologies, enhance energy and chemical efficiency as well as develop
innovative water and wastewater solutions.
Our team of experts in water treatment and carbon analysis can help you assess the carbon footprint of the
different alternatives for your water or wastewater treatment needs, pointing possible reduction options and their
related cost and benefits.
Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies opted for total carbon cost analysis, a method adopted by municipalities,
industries and organizations worldwide.
Assessing your Carbon footprint
Multiplying the activity data with the
relevant emission factors, established by
public and private databases*.
There might be slight differences from one
database to the other but all results have the
same order of magnitude.
* ADEME, EPA, ICE, Ecolnvent, IPCC, NGA, ELCD.
Σ n A i
* EF i
i=1
Where :
"i" is the perimeter
(usually construction and operation during the life
time of the product)
"A i" is the activity data
(kW.h of natural gas, tons of steel, tons.km of
freight, etc.)
"EF i"
is the emission factor
(Eg: 2.77 tons of CO 2
-e / tons of steel)
Total carbon cost
analysis allows us to
calculate all direct
and indirect carbon
emissions caused by
the manufacturing
of the technologies
we offer and the
plants we design and
build, as well as their
operation over a
complete life cycle.
to a sustainable project
Conducting total carbon cost analysis allows us to offer an effective
and recognized approach to environmental management by
Identifying clearly your carbon emission sources
