Greetings All!
I don’t believe how fast time
moves. We have just completed
another successful Gun Raffle. A
big thanks to Steve Leathers and the
Gun Raffle Committee. All of
them need to take a big credit for all
the success over the last few years.
I know I am still enjoying the
high from a successful CSSA this
summer. We continue to hear
nothing but praise on the job El
Kahir did with hosting the event. I
want to make sure everyone knows how much their effort was
appreciated.
I attended Grundy Country Shrine Club meeting this month. They
had great attendance and a wonderful meeting. Jerry Christensen
dropped off five bags of pop tabs from his nephew Chris Smith
(clear from Alabama). His sister has been a Shrine patient at the
Minneapolis hospital.
Remember the Fall Ceremonial on November 17 th at the Activities
Center. There is still time for you to get your new candidates signed
up. Director Mike Zinser has a great day planned for all of the new
guys.
Have a great fall and we will see you along the way through the
end of the year.
ILL. SIR JAMES M FRY, PP 1995
NOBLE WAYNE D BRYANT
NOBLE KEITH F ZEIGLER
Faithfully yours,
Hello Nobles and Ladies,
I want to wish everyone with a birthday in
November a Happy Birthday.
Where has the time gone? Parade season is coming
to an end, and that dirty old word is coming. . .winter.
Lady Judy and I attended the last Potentate’s Ball of
this year at Tehama Temple. We had a nice drive
seeing all the color of the leaves on our way to Grand
Island, NE. Our day started out rainy, but it turned out
sunny and warm by the time we got there. We had a
wonderful time at the ball. Potentate Gary Kruse and
Lady Ardie had a very cute skit done to them about
CSSA and how he drives. Everyone laughed and had
a lot of fun.
The Kruzers Car Show was a very good success. I
would like to thank all of the Kruzers who worked the Car Show. There were many nice
cars in all the different classes. The sound of those engines just sends beautiful music to
your ears. Good job!
Please don’t forget about the Fall Ceremonial on November 17 th . Please get your
candidates’ names in.
We are still looking for someone for the Karavan. To help understand what this
entails, see the list below.
1. Design front cover & layout (this changes for each new Potentate).
2. Receive articles through e-mail, regular mail, Karavan mailbox in the office.
This is due by the 15 th of each month.
3. Receive photos, SD Card, or a printed photo which has to be scanned in.
4. Edit each article
5. Do a layout of the newsletter in some type of publishing program.
6. Proofing.
7. Print Karavan copies for mailing.
8. The mailing of the Karavan typically goes out the last Tuesday of the month.
(Currently done through a group that meets at the office to handle.)
9. Most of the editor’s time is concentrated around the 15 th of the month.
10. On the average, I probably spend 10-15 hours a month on each issue.
If you are interested, please contact the Shrine Office.
Veteran’s Day is coming - let’s remember our men and women that have fought for all
of us. Remember to go out and Vote. This is one of the rights they have fought to let us
have.
Let’s have fun, and help our kids
Thank you,
I’m sure many of you already know, but at the October Stated Meeting, I
announced that I will not run for Assistant Rabban next year. It was a hard
decision, and one I thought about for a long time, but I feel I must put my family
first.
I have truly enjoyed working with all of you and I’m sure this is a decision I
will regret for the rest of my life. I also apologize for any inconvenience this
causes for those on the line.
I told Illustrious Sir Larry that I would finish out this year and then I will be
done.
Thank you to everyone for the encouragement and support during my short time on the Divan. It has
truly been appreciated.
Rod Heiden
High Priest & Prophet
Nobles,
In light of Rod Heiden's announcement that he is not running for Assistant
Rabban next year, I would like to tell you that I intend to run for the position
of Assistant Rabban for 2013 and ask for everyone's help and support.
I want to thank Rod for his help and guidance to me this year and wish him
all the best. It has been great working with him and I, for one, will deeply
miss him.
Fraternally,
Doug Strike, Oriental Guide
By next February, El Kahir needs a new Karavan editor. We know there is someone
out there who would be perfect for this role.
If you are interested in taking on this opportunity for El Kahir and the Nobles and
Ladies, please see any of the Divan members, or talk to us.
Thanks,
Noble Keith & Lady Judy Zeigler, Editors

I’m writing this article from my hotel room in Tampa, FL. I’ve just completed
three long days of training, team building, and fellowship at the Annual Shriner’s
Membership Seminar. Noble Floyd Sauter asked me to lead the Membership Team
next year and I eagerly accepted the challenge. I was quickly reminded of the hard
work and frustrations I experienced when I had the position nearly a decade ago,
but those thoughts quickly subsided as I recalled the pleasure I had when
welcoming new Nobles and asking former Nobles to come back into the fold. We
MUST do it again!
It’s no secret that Shriners International numbers are dwindling. When Imperial
Sir Russell Anthony, DVM was at the helm in 1986-87, there were about 880,000
Shriners in North America. Today, there are 309,000. The heydays of Shrinedom
are behind us – for now. I truly believe we are on a rebound and we will see those
days again. We’ve been at 300,000 members before and grew from there. We
CAN do it again!
The ideas I heard from other Shriners were truly inspiring and I KNOW we can make some changes at El Kahir to
make it the premier fraternal attraction in Eastern Iowa. We already are a premier fraternal group…we just need to
work on the attraction. We WILL do it again!
There’s no better time to start than right now, so I will address a few things that may be of interest to the Nobles and
Ladies of El Kahir.
Shriners International has created an app for iPads and iPhones. Go to the app store to get yours.
Ford Motor Company is offering a substantial discount to Shriners on the purchase of a new Ford car or truck.
Go to WWW.SHRINERSVILLAGE.COM for information.
Nationwide and Travelers Insurance offer Shriner discounts. Go to WWW.SHRINERSVILLAGE.COM for information.
Shriners Headquarters has started an email list to better communicate the happenings at headquarters and at
the hospitals. Go to WWW.SHRINERSVILLAGE.COM to sign up.
Save on Hertz and Avis car rentals when you show your dues card. Go to WWW.SHRINERSVILLAGE.COM for
information.
This is just a sampling of what you’re about to see. There are many more exciting things coming soon!
This seminar has gotten me more excited about being a Shriner than I thought possible. We have lots of
opportunities before us – and God presents us with opportunities to overcome any obstacle.
Nobles and Ladies,
Fall has arrived, schools have started and leaves are falling. But, what a glorious
sight when viewing the trees while they are changing colors.
Things are also changing at El Kahir Shrine Center. The Activities Center has been
completely repainted, parking lot resealed and striped - things are starting to look up.
Now, if only we could get our membership back to what it was in the “Good Old
Days”. It can happen, but only with the help of the Nobility. Talk to the Nobles who
have “Demitted” or those who have been “Suspended” - maybe as their friend, you
can convince them to rejoin. It’s worth a try.
It looks like the “Gun Raffle” will be a success again this year, with a few
outstanding Nobles selling many, many, many tickets. We need the funding income
from the “Fundraisers” such as the Gun Raffle to offset the decrease in our membership income. Give it your best
try Nobles, for El Kahir, sell, sell, sell.
In your “Walk-of-Smiles” Unit/ Club donations, think seriously of giving your donation to the “El Kahir Shrine
Operating Budget or El Kahir Shrine Hospital Transportation Fund.” It is seriously needed in both accounts. Thank
you for this consideration.
Remember the “Fall Ceremonial” is on November 17 th (see schedule in this issue). Bring Candidates! Bring
Candidates! See you there!!!
on C.S.S.A 2012 held in August. On completion of his
report, there was considerable discussion on the funds
which Illustrious Sir Fry as Potentate of C.S.S.A. 2012
wanted to withhold as “start-up” funds for the 2013
C.S.S.A. Business Session being held in Cedar Rapids on
March 13-15, 2013. There was discussion by various
Nobles in attendance as to why Illustrious Sir Fry wanted
to withhold a portion of the money for “start-up money”.
Illustrious Sir Fry explained his reasoning for wanting
these funds. Although, Nobles on questioning, agreed all
the funds collected during the C.S.S.A. Ceremonial in
August 2012 were under the control of the Potentate of El
Kahir Shrine, and therefore, all funds should be sent to El
Kahir Shrine and the bank account closed. Illustrious Sir
Fry directed C.S.S.A. Treasurer Noble Norman Wright to
write a check to El Kahir Shrine for the entire amount of
The 2013 "Shrine Bowl Game" is scheduled to be held in Cedar Falls at the UNI Dome on Saturday, July
27th.
Since this game is in the El Kahir area, the Shrine Bowl Board is requesting that El Kahir form a "Shrine
Bowl Club" in order that we can assist in planning and helping with the activities the week prior to the game
and the weekend of the game.
A few Nobles have committed to serve on the" Shrine Bowl Club" but we need up to 10 more Nobles that
will commit to serving. Contact one of the Shrine Bowl Board members listed below if you are interested.
We all joined the Shrine to "Help Kids" and support the Shrine Hospitals. Since this is the purpose of the
Shrine Bowl Game, El Kahir really needs to commit supporting the activities of the game.
We will be having a meeting within the next month or so to organize the Club. The present Shrine Bowl
Game Manager, Jerry Hoffman, will come to Cedar Rapids to help us form the Club. Since the actual game
will be in Cedar Falls we are expecting several Nobles from the Waterloo area, and North, to volunteer to
serve.
Thank you all for your consideration to help,
Well, here it is November already - how times flies.
Don't forget this month that we set our clocks back one hour. It also means we get another hour of sleep - ha ha
ha.
The Staff had their meeting here in Waterloo (in October), and we had a very good turnout. We met at a place
called Doeys Joeys - boy the boys sure can eat a lot of pizza!
Some things are starting to wind down. The Popcorn Truck is not too busy now, but we still have Basket Nights
The Gun Raffle is over with a good turnout.
In November we have our election of officers. I hope you can make it. It is also the government election.
Do you ever stop and think about different things, like why it is called after dark when it is really after light; why
does slow down and slow up mean the same thing; how come we choose from two people to run for president and
over fifty to run for Miss America; why do people constantly return to the refrigerator with the hope that something
new to eat has materialized; and do Congressmen try hard to get re-elected as they would hate to make a living
under the laws they've passed?
Remember, happiness is fundamentally a state of mind--not the body.
Keep the Faith ,
Clyde, the Secretary

Rumor has it the Vintage Auto Unit has its own “Big Shriner”.
Either that, or this big guy has a real small car!!!
Was the water too hot???
This has been a very good year for the Vintage Auto Unit, and I would like to thank all the Nobles in the Vintage
Auto Unit for making this happen.
We had several parades since the last edition of the Karavan. We paraded at Fayette for their city parade, and a
couple of weeks later we went back and paraded at Fayette for the Homecoming parade for Upper Iowa University.
After the parade, several of us went to Ft. Atkinson to the re-enactment at the Fort. Late that afternoon we went on to
Spillville to the Bily Brothers Clock Museum. What a wonderful day we had. We also paraded at Wadena. This
was a fun parade. I think the parade was about six blocks long and that little red car with the big Shriner clocked 18
to 20 blocks! We put on a good show for them, and we are looking forward to next year at Wadena already. Our
last scheduled parade this year will be in Waverly on October 20 th for Wartburg College’s Homecoming.
If you would like to become a member of the Vintage Auto Unit and join in on the fun that we have, please
contact Noble Rob Zimmerly at 319.504.2704, or you can contact any Vintage Auto Noble.
This month’s featured member is Illustrious Sir Dan Bush, PP 2011. He is also a Past President of the Vintage
Auto Unit. Illustrious Sir Dan is the proud owner of “The Drain Doctor” in Waterloo. He has several very nice cars
– Cadillacs, Lincolns, Chryslers, Fords and VW’s. He and his lovely Lady Cindy just recently celebrated their first
anniversary together! We wish them many, many more!
The “Walk of Smiles” will be an important part of the Fall Ceremonial on Saturday, November17 th . At the expense of being
labeled as someone who rambles on and on, here is a brief history of the “Walk of Smiles”. It also is interwoven with some
memories about past circuses and CSSA trips. I do this at the risk of being corrected by some of the “old salts” (a Marine Corps
phrase for old and experienced members).
Years ago, at the Fall Ceremonials, 100% of the “Walk of Smiles” donations that were given by the Units, Clubs and
individuals were directed to the hospitals. The revenue to pay for El Kahir’s administration and facility upkeep and expenses
came primarily from members’ dues, rentals and miscellaneous sources.
Prior to the mid 1960’s, members were involved in an annual horse show to raise funds. Although Potentate Ed Klouda
sponsored an El Kahir Circus in 1961 at the Veteran’s Memorial Coliseum, Potentate George Clifford (in 1967) had the first El
Kahir Shrine Circus at the old ball park. These circuses were so successful that in 1980, a year after the Five Seasons Center was
opened, the annual circus moved to this facility. Also for several years, we had a circus at UNI.
During these years, El Kahir had an Advisory Council with representatives from each Unit. The Advisory Council was
responsible for disbursing these funds to the Units. Initially, funds from the horse shows and circuses were used to pay the
expenses for the members of the various units to travel to the annual CSSA meetings. El Kahir would charter an entire train and
had a unique whistle installed to let the public know that the Shrine was coming. Shrine members, who were engineers and
conductors, staffed the train.
The last chartered train was in1965 or 1966. To say those trips were memorable is a gross understatement. In 1964 or 1965, the
trip to Denver on the train pre-dated Coors beer being sold in Iowa. There may be a few members of the Wrecking Crew, now
called the Directors Staff, who recall feverishly loading cases of Coors beer onto the train. That bottle of Coors beer was a prized
possession in Eastern Iowa.
Several years after the train trips were discontinued, the funds from the circus were then allocated to the individual Units to be
used at their discretion. The allocation was based upon the amount of each Unit’s participation in promoting and working the
circus. I believe that most Units continued to use the circus funds to pay for their members’ trip to the CSSA.
During these years, the money the Units and Clubs raised from other activities, such as parades, they donated close to 100%, if
not all of it to the “Walk of Smiles” for the hospital. However, as expenses continued to rise and membership declined, a portion
of these funds were then diverted to pay for facility upkeep and administrative expenses of the Temple.
Forty and fifty years ago, paying for the expenses of administration and upkeep of El Kahir was not the problem that exists
today. Those circuses were netting in excess of $50,000. In addition, El Kahir had about 3,500 to 4,000 members. That is not the
case today.
As a member of El Kahir, I understand the need and realize the importance of financially supporting El Kahir. In order for El
Kahir to survive, Units, Clubs and individual members have to contribute to the center.
However, the mission of the AAONMS is to help kids, and we do this by supporting the Twin Cities Shriners Hospital for
Children and El Kahir’s Transportation Fund. In past years, Units, Clubs and individuals have generously supported the “world’s
greatest philanthropy”. At this year’s “Walk of Smiles”, once again, please think kindly of our kids and contribute a portion of
your donation to El Kahir’s Transportation Fund and/or to Outreach Clinics for Twin Cities Shriners Hospital for Children. Help
both El Kahir and the Twin Cities Shriners Hospital along with our Transportation Fund.
The hospital has discontinued using the application form for considering new patients. They now use a Patient Information
Form. This will reduce the amount of time from initial contact to appointment. Give this form to a prospective patient. It appears
on the next page. Additional copies are in the office.
There is another organization in El Kahir that has played an important role in the success of the “world’s greatest philanthropy”-
the Ladies Auxiliary. The Twin Cities Shrine Hospital for Children is the only hospital in the Shrine system that has a Ladies
Auxiliary. Over the years this dedicated band of Ladies have sowed, knitted, crocheted and raised money for the TCSHC. Like the
Temple membership, their numbers have declined. Yet during the year, they meet almost every month to donate money, bring
toys, socks, knit and sow.
Their annual dues are only $10. Nobles, ask your wife, daughter, sister, significant other to consider joining. If they don’t have
the time to meet, I am sure the Auxiliary would appreciate the annual dues payment. However, I understand the Ladies also enjoy
the “fellowship” and getting together. They are a great bunch of Ladies.
Memorials: In honor of Betta Nielson - Donation by Shirley Doolen.
Thank you so much for thinking of the Women’s Auxiliary with this wonderful memorial. Please consider a living memorial
or honorarium for your loved ones who already have too much stuff. It is such a gift of loving respect and does so much good.
At age 7, Chad Knapp who has cerebral palsy, attended a Vikings game and was seated in his wheelchair in the end zone.
Randy Moss scored a touchdown, spotted Chad, and gave him the ball. That gesture by Randy changed both Chad’s life as well
as Brad Madson’s, Executive Director of Community Relations for the Minnesota Vikings. When Brad met Chad, he
immediately sensed his maturity and invited him to attend the Vikings Youth Football Coach Clinic. By age 10 and through 40
surgeries, Chad no longer needed his wheelchair, and as a result became an inspiration to his “team”.
Perhaps most telling about this young man is his contribution to his high school wrestling team. Chad desperately wanted to
wrestle and his record shows that although he attained some victories they came by way of receiving forfeit points for his team.
On January 30, 2010 Chad had a series of firsts: his first takedown; his first back points; and with his first period pin he had his
first “win”. After the match his comment was, “This is just the start! Now I gotta’ keep it going”. Chad’s advice is “Never stop
chasing your dreams because nothing is too big if you believe.” At his high school graduation Chad delivered an inspirational
speech emphasizing the key is not always winning but always trying; and he also spoke of friendship and loyalty. Needless to
say, the crowd erupted when this young man was done.
A big thanks to all that have responded to our Bingo game.
There will be no Auxiliary meetings in December or January. Hope to see you all the third Thursday in February, and enjoy a
nice day and better weather.
The El Kahir Oriental Band met on September 30th for their Annual Christmas Gift Exchange and
monthly meeting in the home of Jay and Connie Owens in Traer.
A potluck dinner was served outside with Ilustrious Sir Marlin Mulnix and his Lady Marty, President Jay
Owens and his Lady Connie, Vice President Butch Scott and his Lady Linda, Band Leader Jim Fackler and
his Lady Sharon, Treasurer David Buskohl, new member Marvin Boldt and his Lady Nancy and oh yes, our
High Priest and Prophet Rod Heiden in attendance.
A short business meeting was held with discussion on the upcoming Gun Raffle October 27th, the Fall
Ceremonial November 17th, the Teddy Bear fundraiser December 1st, the Shrine Christmas Dinner December 15th, and the
Shrine Bowl that will be held in July at he UNI Dome. Noble David Buskohl is already a member of the El Kahir Shrine
Football Club. With exceptional information given by High Priest and Prophet Rod Heiden, the business meeting was adjourned
and into the house for the Great El Kahir Oriental Band Christmas Gift Exchange. Fun was had by all and another great season
was called to an end with Noble Band Leader Jim Fackler and his Lady Sharon heading south to Texas in a few short weeks.
I would like to welcome any Noble and his Lady to join the Oriental Band. We have many instruments to play where reading
music is not required. We have plenty of parade costumes, so cost and talent are not required. For seven members, we did bring
home three first place trophies from CSSA, so there is pride in what we do. In parades we ride on a trailer, we always have fun,
but most important we do it “So Crippled Children Can Walk!” Join the Oriental Band. Call ME at 319.269.1775 (cell) or
319.478.2710 (work). (P.S.: Donna Kehoe, get better!)
