What is the City Truancy Court?
At City Truancy Court, parents are
held accountable in a Court of law for
their children’s truancy.
What is truancy?
Truancy occurs when a child is absent
from school without a legitimate,
verifiable reason such as illness,
doctor’s appointment, funeral, etc.
Why was I referred to City Truancy
Court?
Because your child has more than 10
unexcused/undocumented absences
for reasons other than those listed
above. In order for an absence to be
excused, documentation must be
provided to the school.
Children under age 16 must attend
school – it’s the law.
What happens at Court?
At your first Court appearance the
Judge will explain the Truancy
Ordinance and the possible
Your child is expected to attend the
first Court appearance. Thereafter,
your child’s appearance will be on an
as needed basis.
If you fail to appear, a warrant for your
arrest will be issued.
What is the Truancy Ordinance?
It says that a parent, guardian, or
other person who has control or
custody of a child between the ages of
7 and 16 must have that child enrolled
and attending school daily.
To knowingly permit a child to be
absent from school, without a
legitimate, documented excuse, is
against the law.
Any person convicted of a violation of
this law can be fined $25.00 for each
day the child is truant.
Can I be fined because my child
has been truant?
Yes. The law allows the City of St.
Louis to assess a fine of $25.00 a day
for each occurrence. For example, if
Am I entitled to an attorney?
Yes. At any time, you may hire a
private attorney who can represent
you at any court appearance.
The City Truancy Court is a joint effort of
the following agencies to reduce truancy:
• Family Court – 22 nd Circuit
• St. Louis Police Department
• St. Louis Public Schools
It is the parent’s responsibility to
bring up-to-date attendance and
progress report or report card to
each Court date.
