Mensa Marvel!
JUNIORS
Year 6 pupil Aahil Jouher has gained the highest possible score after taking a Mensa IQ test.
Aahil said, "I just thought I'd get an average score. When I found out I just thought 'Oh my word'. I was really quite
surprised. I thought I was just like every other ordinary kid."
Aahil’s favourite subjects are maths and science, and he spends his spare time inventing things.
He added: "I want to be a scientist when I grow up. I like inventing things, most of the time they go wrong. I'm building a
small computer at the moment, let's just say it's a work in progress."
His proud father, stroke consultant Dr Jouher Kallingal said: "We decided to send him for the test when he reach 10 and
a half. When we got the results I rang Mensa to ask what it meant and they explained he had got the top score of 162.
We were obviously surprised after the test, he had told us he didn't think it had gone well.
‘The Headmaster was delighted to learn of Aahil’s success. “The School has a long history of academic success stretching
back over 500 years and it is excellent that Aahil has already made his mark in this way. We are all very proud of him.”
Robinwood Remembered
Day 1
Once we got there (we had to walk a mile or two) we were shown our dormitories and made the beds (HORRIBLE)
but lunch was tasty. Then we got to do some activities!
The zip wire, pretty much how you would expect it to be - we rode a zip wire, it was great! Then we made bottle
rockets and launched them using… the power of water and pressure, much cooler than it sounds trust me!
We did an obstacle course, it was embarrassing, I may have been slightly terrible, but fun though!
The giant swing was amazing, then we did archery, I was actually alright at this. Then we played snakes and
ladders using our bows to shoot arrows into the target! Then finally bedtime, and hottie choccie!
Day 2
We woke up and there was only one thing on our minds, breakfast – following that came climbing, caving, lunch,
then Piranha pool! We were locked in a room with a pool full of Piranhas and we only had 40 minutes until they
were released, riddles puzzles padlocks, safes and much more!
Following this was the trapeze - 4 metres high with a bar to catch the trapeze beats them all, apart from the fact I
was terrified I was going to fall off the whole time! We then had the crate challenge, stacking up crates, incredibly
high, while standing up on them (WOW!).
Day 3
Canoeing - time to get wet in a very cold lake - oh no! Then raft building, how bad can it be… what? We have to
jump in? You must be joking!
Then it was Knights Quest - bring it on peasants, you’re no match for the nobles!
It’s time to go home, oh no, another 2 mile walk!
Bye bye Robinwood, we will miss you!
Sports Day
The Junior School were blessed, yet again, with beautiful sunshine for their Sports Day.The children spent the full day at
Lammack enjoying cricket and rounders in the morning and a picnic lunch. The afternoon began with a parade around the
field in front of lots of parents, guardians and friends. The children took part in sprint races, long distance running, long and
triple jumping, cricket, rounders ball and javelin throwing, with them all scoring points for their Houses. Mr Whall also did a
sponsored run with the children in aid of Brian House Childrens' Hospice. The Years 5 and 6 also had a Tug-of-War
competition with Raleigh showing their strength as champions. The Sports day trophy was eventually won, after a closely
fought battle, by Grenville. Thomas Sleigh as House captain received the trophy from Mr Corns.
Cake Mania
The idea of raising money for a charity interested me.
In my Arabic school we were asked to raise as much money as possible for a charity called Kids4Orphans. This charity supported
orphans around the world that have no help and nowhere to live.
On the way back home I told my mum about the charity and that we should do a cake sale in school to raise money. She agreed
it was a good idea and said we should ask Miss Wharmby. So on Monday my sister Nabaa asked Miss Wharmby if we could do a
cake sale and she kindly agreed. After school my sister and I told my mum the good news and
she started making the most wonderful cakes and the results were amazing!
On Wednesday we took all the cakes and our friends’ cakes to the music room and set everything
up ready for the sale. By the end of the day nearly everything had been sold and we raised a lot
of money! The next day we came with even more cakes and they were all sold out! Finally my
mum baked her very best cakes ready for our last cake sale. Almost the whole school came and
we raised a lot more than we expected! We raised £280!
Thank you to all who contributed because without your help we couldn’t have raised any money!
Omar Al-mitwally
Mr Whall thanks you
A massive thank you to all the children who completed their 1km sponsored run alongside me at the Junior School Sports
Day this year, it was a fabulous effort on such a sunny and eventful day. Nearly everyone in Junior School took part and
there was an impressive attitude and camaraderie shown by all who ran. However, a special mention must go to
Mahfooz Valli, Adam Hussain and Cameron Hegg who really stood out with the support and encouragement they offered
others on their way round. Overall, we have raised a phenomenal £964 for Brian House Children’s Hospice! Our top
fundraisers, and t-shirt prize winners, were Amaarah Aslam, Niamh Hamilton, Sebastian White and Laura Lake who
between them raised more than £150! With a few more sponsor forms still to be returned we might even reach the
magic £1000 for running 1000m, well done and thank you all.
I have now completed my first ever marathon, running 27.5 miles across the North Yorkshire Moors in just over 5hrs.
Thank you for all the kind words of support and generous donations, only another 70 or so days of running to go, and the
small matter of a 35 mile race across the Lake District, and then I can finally put my feet up and rest – until the next day
when we are back at school for the start of a new term!
Year 4 Trip to Grassington
On a fairly hot Friday, the day after Queen Elizabeth Grammar School
Junior School sports day, Year 4 set off on a trip to Grassington in
the Yorkshire Dales. The aim of the trip was to study the local area,
in particular the River Wharfe. After a quick toilet trip the 40
children boarded the coach for the long and windy journey.
When the children arrived they set off on the ‘river walk’ equipped
with everything they needed for the day ahead. The half way point
of the walk was marked by an old wobbly bridge above the beautiful
River Wharfe. After a deep breath, the children stepped onto the
bridge with a teacher leading them.
When all the children had safely crossed, they saw the mysterious
hill that would be the venue for the picnic lunch. It was magnificent!
After what seemed like forever everyone arrived at the top of the
hill with red faces and sore legs.
After lunch, the responsible children collected all the litter and set
off back to the centre of Grassington. The walk seemed a lot longer
on the way back. Mr Clare had a little surprise for the long coach
journey back. Forty bags of individually packed Yorkshire Mix from
the local sweet shop. A good day was had by all.
Mia makes a big splash!
JUNIORS
Year 5 swimmer Mia Smith, who swims on average, five times a week, has just been ranked fifth in
Britain for 100m butterfly in her age group.
Her proud mum Gill, Deputy Headteacher at Haslingden High School, said: “She has been swimming since she
was a baby and she first joined a competitive swimming club when she was seven. She started competing in
club galas at eight.
“She is now a member of Pioneer 79 Swimming Club of Accrington and swims three-four nights after school and
every Sunday at 7am.”
Mia, from Helmshore, earned her national position after the Blackpool Rocks meet at Palatine Swimming Pool, which she
entered after having achieved the qualifying times to compete against other young swimmers.
Mia said: “I enjoy swimming very much and felt really proud when I won so many medals at Blackpool and gained PBs in almost
all my events. I have good team mates and love training with them and working towards our competitions.”
Gill said: “By the end of the weekend meet she had won six golds, two silvers and one bronze.
“She competed in 50m, 100m and 200m races swimming different strokes over the two days.
“Mia was up against swimmers from all over the North West region and she ended up winning the top girl prize for her age
group on points. When the rankings came out we found out she was fifth in Britain for 100m butterfly.
“It was an amazing weekend and we are incredibly proud. She has worked so hard. Mia is quite a shy, quiet little girl but when
she dives off the blocks and swims she has a lot of confidence and she wants to win.”
Mia has already potentially qualified to swim for the first time in the Lancashire County
Championships in the 200m backstroke, 50m breaststroke and 200m breaststroke and the
aim there is to gain experience of long course swimming with the future goal of gaining a
place in the regionals.
She is confident swimming all different strokes but her preference is currently for butterfly.
“I knew she was talented because when she was five she completed a sponsored swim and
swam 2,000 metres – that’s 80 lengths of a normal swimming pool,” said Gill.
On top of her national placing, Mia also recently regained her title as Blackburn with Darwen
butterfly champion at the Primary Schools’ Swimming Gala where she competed against older Year 6 pupils.
INFANTS
Fun Learning Together
Year One have really enjoyed their Fun Learning Together sessions and were able to share a variety of activities with their
mums and dads. The children created fairy tale settings, read stories, decorated buns, made patterns with beads, wrote
stories, matched animals to their countries and names, played snakes and ladders, used the bee-bots and completed some
challenging jigsaws. Parents and children alike enjoyed taking part in the activities and had fun completing challenges
together. It was a great opportunity for parents to see how much fun the children have in school! Everybody had a fantastic
time and really enjoyed spending quality time in school with their parents.

Round the World
A fascinating and fun packed time was had by all the Infants on Friday 19 June. In the last few weeks each class has studied a
different country and Friday was the day to share that learning around the Infants. Instead of normal lessons, each class experienced a
little of the work being covered in each classroom. This saw the children making boomerangs in ‘Australia’,
chef hats in ‘Italy’, and Masai masks in ‘Kenya’. They also enjoyed sampling fajitas in ‘Mexico’, designing an
outfit in ‘Antarctica’ and dancing the flamenco in ‘Spain.’
The children said they had thoroughly enjoyed their whistle stop world tour and who knows whether this
will spark an interest in travel in some children. It was a very worthwhile educational experience and lots of

Reception’s adventure to
Thornton Hall Farm
INFANTS
The children were thrilled to explore the countryside in our latest trip to the farm. They marvelled at the baby lambs and
cows, they enjoyed feeding them their breakfast of warm milk. The children saw many animals and even got to hold some
including puppies, guinea pigs and rabbits. Whilst exploring the foxes’ hideout, the Reception children had a race down
the hill to see who could get to the top of the straw-bale pyramid first. What a delight it was for the children to visit the
paddocks and collect their very own hens’ eggs, Miss Cheng and Mrs Dutton even took some home. To finish off our
hectic day the children were able to relax and enjoy the fresh air by riding a ‘Caterpillar’ attached to a quad bike. The
homemade ice cream went down a real treat alongside milking the pretend cow! What a fabulous day out for Reception.
