Pediatrician of the Year
Steven Kairys, MD, MPH, FAAP
Dr. Kairys serves as Chairman of Pediatrics at Jersey Shore University Medical
Center and Professor of Pediatrics at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.
In addition, he serves as:
• Medical Director and Chairman of the Board of the Pediatric Council on
Research and Education (PCORE)
• Medical Director of the national AAP Quality Improvement and Innovation
Network ( QuIIN)
• Chairperson, New Jersey Council of Childrens’ Hospitals
• Chair of the Nomination and Governance Committee- NICHQ
• A leader for several AAPNJ/NJ PCORE initiatives related to improving pediatric
health outcomes and office-based systems change, including: Medical Home,
child abuse and neglect prevention and lead poisoning prevention
The Children’s Ball tradition of honoring outstanding pediatricians,
legislators and advocates for children and families in New Jersey
continues with another year of exceptional dining and Broadwaycaliber
entertainment.

The evening’s featured entertainment is Joseph Charles John
“Joe” Piscopo, a New Jerseyan comedian, singer and actor best
known for his work on Saturday Night Live where he played a
variety of recurring characters. Joe will take the stage for an
evening of great songs, comedy and lots of surprises.
Assemblywoman Angelini is a member of the Assembly Health and Senior Services
Committee and the Assembly Human Services Committee. In 2012, she was primary
sponsor of 94 bills, many crafted to protect and improve the health and wellbeing of
the State’s children, including:
• Expanding the number of “Safe Havens” for newborns
• Enacting the Jessica Lunsford Act, imposing a mandatory 25 years to life sentence for
aggravated sexual assault against children under 13 years of age
• Introducing the “Anti-Bullying Bill of Rights,” and the “911” legislation
Assemblyman Herb Conaway Jr, MD
Your valued support for Spotlight on Children will help to sustain
important AAP/NJ projects and programs to:
• Provide pediatricians and their patients and families with
greater access to local mental health resources by expanding
the State’s first child psychiatrist consultation project

Dr. Conaway, a leader in the Democratic Majority, is the only member of the Legislature
possessing both a medical and law degree. He was the primary sponsor of more than
190 bills in 2012, most focusing on expanding access to care and medicine and
safeguarding children and families. Actions championed in 2012 include:
• Deliver programs and strategies for preventing child abuse
and neglect to healthcare providers and early intervention
professionals
• Link every child to a Dental Health Home by age one
• Reduce childhood obesity and improve health outcomes by
supporting exclusive breastfeeding rates throughout NJ
• Supporting Medicaid expansion
• Proposing an amendment requiring the State to pay special education costs
• Clarifying statutory exemptions from mandatory immunizations

Professor of Pediatrics and Microbiology at the University of Illinois, College of Medicine
at Rockford and a member of the Division of Allergy, Immunology, and Infectious
Diseases at The Children’s Hospital at St. Peter’s University Hospital.
• An AAP/NJ member for over 15 years • Chair of the AAP/NJ Senior Section
• Dedicated member of the Government Affairs Committee, where he has been instrumental
in advancing the Chapter’s Agenda for Children priorities with the legislature
• Co-Chair of the NJ Immunization Network • Visiting Professor of Pharmacology,
American University of the Caribbean
• Protect greater numbers of children and families against
vaccine-preventable diseases through educational outreach
