Pediatrician of the Year<br />
Steven Kairys, MD, MPH, FAAP<br />
Dr. Kairys serves as Chairman of Pediatrics at <strong>Jersey</strong> Shore University Medical<br />
Center and Professor of Pediatrics at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.<br />
In addition, he serves as:<br />
• Medical Director and Chairman of the Board of the Pediatric Council on<br />
Research and Education (PCORE)<br />
• Medical Director of the national AAP Quality Improvement and Innovation<br />
Network ( QuIIN)<br />
• Chairperson, <strong>New</strong> <strong>Jersey</strong> Council of Childrens’ Hospitals<br />
• Chair of the Nomination and Governance Committee- NICHQ<br />
• A leader for several AAPNJ/NJ PCORE initiatives related to improving pediatric<br />
health outcomes and office-based systems change, including: Medical Home,<br />
child abuse and neglect prevention and lead poisoning prevention<br />
The Children’s Ball tradition of honoring outstanding pediatricians,<br />
legislators and advocates for children and families in <strong>New</strong> <strong>Jersey</strong><br />
continues with another year of exceptional dining and Broadwaycaliber<br />
entertainment.<br />
Children’s Advocates of the Year<br />
Assemblywoman Mary Pat Angelini<br />
NJ State Legislative District 11<br />
The evening’s featured entertainment is Joseph Charles John<br />
“Joe” Piscopo, a <strong>New</strong> <strong>Jersey</strong>an comedian, singer and actor best<br />
known for his work on <strong>Saturday</strong> Night Live where he played a<br />
variety of recurring characters. Joe will take the stage for an<br />
evening of great songs, comedy and lots of surprises.<br />
Assemblywoman Angelini is a member of the Assembly Health and Senior Services<br />
Committee and the Assembly Human Services Committee. In <strong>20</strong>12, she was primary<br />
sponsor of 94 bills, many crafted to protect and improve the health and wellbeing of<br />
the State’s children, including:<br />
• Expanding the number of “Safe Havens” for newborns<br />
• Enacting the Jessica Lunsford Act, imposing a mandatory 25 years to life sentence for<br />
aggravated sexual assault against children under 13 years of age<br />
• Introducing the “Anti-Bullying Bill of Rights,” and the “911” legislation<br />
Assemblyman Herb Conaway Jr, MD<br />
Your valued support for Spotlight on Children will help to sustain<br />
important AAP/NJ projects and programs to:<br />
• Provide pediatricians and their patients and families with<br />
greater access to local mental health resources by expanding<br />
the State’s first child psychiatrist consultation project<br />
NJ State Legislative District 7<br />
Dr. Conaway, a leader in the Democratic Majority, is the only member of the Legislature<br />
possessing both a medical and law degree. He was the primary sponsor of more than<br />
190 bills in <strong>20</strong>12, most focusing on expanding access to care and medicine and<br />
safeguarding children and families. Actions championed in <strong>20</strong>12 include:<br />
• Deliver programs and strategies for preventing child abuse<br />
and neglect to healthcare providers and early intervention<br />
professionals<br />
• Link every child to a Dental Health Home by age one<br />
• Reduce childhood obesity and improve health outcomes by<br />
supporting exclusive breastfeeding rates throughout NJ<br />
• Supporting Medicaid expansion<br />
• Proposing an amendment requiring the State to pay special education costs<br />
• Clarifying statutory exemptions from mandatory immunizations<br />
Lawrence Frenkel, MD, FAAP, FACAAI, FPIDS<br />
Professor of Pediatrics and Microbiology at the University of Illinois, College of Medicine<br />
at Rockford and a member of the Division of Allergy, Immunology, and Infectious<br />
Diseases at The Children’s Hospital at St. Peter’s University Hospital.<br />
• An AAP/NJ member for over 15 years • Chair of the AAP/NJ Senior Section<br />
• Dedicated member of the Government Affairs Committee, where he has been instrumental<br />
in advancing the <strong>Chapter</strong>’s Agenda for Children priorities with the legislature<br />
