2008 season preview
TM
A mix of youth,
experience in ’08
Washburn will have combination of
veterans and youth for upcoming season
Coming off their fourth winning season in a row, something which has not been
accomplished at Washburn in more than 100 years, the Ichabods find themselves entering
the 2008 season with a solid mixture of returning lettermen and youthful depth
with 43 returning lettermen and 17 starters from an 8-4 team from one year ago which
reached the NCAA Playoffs.
In 2008, the Ichabods will embark on a schedule which features a Football Sub-
Championships Series opponent in Missouri State after taking on Colorado Mines to
open the season before beginning the MIAA slate on Sept. 13 at Fort Hays State.
The Drive for Five
It has been more than 100 years since the
Ichabod football program has rolled off five
straight seasons of winning football. Since
Craig Schurig took over the program prior
to the 2002 season, the Ichabods have gone
40-29 with two NCAA Playoff appearances
and the 2005 MIAA title. The Ichabods
have not had five straight winning seasons
since the 1903 to 1907 seasons.
“We feel our program is to the point
where we can continue to build on success
from the previous seasons with outstanding
veteran players and the influx of new
talent,” Schurig said. “Winning creates
winning and that is what our coaching staff
and players have been striving for is to continue
to improve each season.”
The Ichabods reached the NCAA Playoffs
for the second time in the last three
seasons falling at West Texas A&M.
This season the Ichabods are slated to
return 43 lettermen in fall camp along with
17 starters. Add to the mix of back-to-back
top-flight recruiting classes the competition
for playing time is as strong as it has
been at Washburn.
“We are going to have a great fall camp,”
Schurig said. “We have a good core group
of returners, but they are going to be pushed
by some of the new players for playing time
this season.”
The Offense
The Ichabods return seven starters on offense
from last season and one more who
returns after missing the 2007 season with
an injury.
“We really feel this could be one of the
best offenses we’ve had in six seasons.”
Schurig said. “We really want to keep an
uptempo offense and control the ball and
clock keeping the opponent’s defense on
the field.”
Quarterback
Who’s Back: Sophomore quarterback
Jake Iverson is the only one of the
four quarterbacks on the roster who have
game experience. The other two are redshirt
freshmen Cameron Kasel and Dane Simoneau
who will compete for time as Iverson
enters fall camp with the starting nod.
Iverson completed two of six passes while
playing understudy to Washburn’s all-time
passing leader Jordan Brill.
Who’s New: The last name isn’t new
but the first is as Jared Brill joins the Ichabods
this fall after watching his brother rewrite
the Washburn record books leading
the Ichabods to two NCAA Playoffs and the 2005 MIAA title.
Notable: Iverson is aiming to become the first sophomore quarterback
to start the season under center since Jordan Brill did in
2005.
Quotable: “Our quarterbacks worked hard in the spring and
each of them push the others,” Schurig said. “As a coaching staff we
are confident in Jake, Cameron or Dane leading the offense.”
Running Back
Who’s Back: Senior Brandon Walker rushed for 760 yards en
route to MIAA second team honors as well as the Ichabods’ Offensive
Player of the Year in 2007. Also back is sophomore Terrance
Lowe who rushed for 177 yards in the regular season final against
Southwest Baptist last year.
Who’s New: After redshirting in 2007, Justin Cooper will also
push for carries this season.
Notable: Brandon Walker, has played wide receiver, quarterback
and running back at Washburn averaged 17.1 yards per reception
last season with 23 catches and three touchdowns.
Quotable: “We have depth at running back,” Schurig said. “With
the quality of running backs we have we need to run hard and we
plan to rotate Brandon, Terrance and Justin throughout the season
to keep everyone fresh. We also want to get more production out of
our fullbacks.”
Quotable: “Our tight ends are used for more than just pass receptions,”
Schurig said. “We use them in our blocking schemes and
split them out as wide receivers too. We are always looking for ways
to utilize their skills to help the team.”
Offensive Line
Who’s Back: Going from the most experienced player groupings
on offense last season, the Ichabod offensive line for 2008 is
the youngest group this season. With only one senior listed in the
personnel chart in Andy Kavanaugh, the offensive line will have to
quickly gel entering the season. Junior center Grant Hajek returns
after starting all 12 games last season. Sophomore Ty Lewis returns
at left guard after playing in six games last season. Fellow sophomore
Thadd Taylor played both center and guard during spring ball
and making the switch from the defensive to the offensive line is
junior Ben Bianchino. Bianchino started 11 games on the defensive
line in 2007.
Notable: The Ichabod offensive line has produced a 1,000-yard
rusher in five of the six seasons under offensive coordinator and offensive
line coach Brian Miller.
Quotable: “We have some talent returning this season on the
offensive line,” Schurig said. “But there is a possibility of someone
coming in and taking playing time from one of the returning players.
This group will compete throughout fall camp for playing time.”
WASHBURN UNIVERSITY
Wide Receivers
Who’s Back: The Ichabods will have six receivers on the personnel
chart who saw action last season. Juniors Brad Cole and
Drameagon Powers are listed as starters entering the fall and they
will be rotated with senior Trent Stepps and junior Joe Hastings
along with sophomores Brody Schuler and Lloyd Bias.
Notable: The Ichabods return seven of the eight receivers who
caught passes last season.
Quotable: “This is as deep as we have been at receiver in a while,”
Schurig said. “This group will provide big-play potential and consistent
clutch play for our offense.
Tight End
Who’s Back: Sophomore Cameron Knox is the only tight end
who saw action last year. Ryan Mertz, a 6-7, 210 pound tight end,
is a converted wide receiver who will provide a big target on vertical
and over the middle routes for the Ichabods. Sophomore Seth Homolka
is a strong blocker as a converted fullback who will be used in
the passing game and as a blocker in the run schemes.
Notable: Tight end position players caught nine passes for the
Ichabods last season for 142 yards.
The Defense
Last season, the Ichabods led the MIAA in turnover margin
creating a league-high 39 turnovers with a school-record tying 23
interceptions.
“Our defense has talent, experience and depth,” Schurig said.
“Our front seven from the defensive line and linebackers from top
to bottom are as good as any other in the conference.”
Defensive Line
Who’s Back: Three of the four starters on the defensive line are
seniors with Mitch Birt and Eric Lawrence at the ends and D.J.
Frommothelydo at a tackle. At the other tackle is junior Brandon
Jackson. Lawrence had a team-high 14.5 tackles for loss with 5.5
sacks having started 34 games at Washburn. Birt has recorded 62
tackles at Washburn and Frommothelydo emerged as a run-stopper
last season. Also looking for time in the rotation will be senior Martell
Underwood, junior Ben Muir and redshirt freshmen Dakota
Palan-Johnson, Victor Butler and Cory Walker.
Who’s New: Senior Byron Smith, a transfer who started three
games at Arizona as the No. 5 ranked junior college defensive lineman
will join the Ichabods this fall.

2008 Season Preview
TM
Notable: The Ichabod returning defensive linemen have 51
combined starts entering this season.
Quotable: “Our depth on the defensive line in returning starters
and back ups will be a positive for us and the new players we have
will have an impact immediately for us,” Schurig said.
Linebackers
Who’s Back: Simply put: everyone. Of the top eight listed on
the Ichabod personnel chart, seven played at least 10 games last season
listing two seniors in Bruce Ringwood and Jake Righter. A 2008
Lindy’s Magazine preseason All-American pick in Zach Watkins
led the Ichabods and the MIAA in tackles last season with 143 including
64 solo stops. Ringwood recorded 88 tackles while starting
10 of 12 games. At the outside linebackers position, junior Michael
Wilhoite returns to one spot while sophomore Ray Trice slides into
the other after playing in all 12 games last season. Wilhoite had 58
tackles with three interceptions including one returned for a touchdown
in the NCAA Playoff game and Trice recorded 31 tackles
with 5.5 for loss playing in all 12 games. Making the move up from
free safety to outside linebacker is Marty Pfannenstiel who played
in 11 games as a true freshman with five tackles.
Who’s New: Jahmil Taylor, a 6-1, 205 redshirt freshman who
will push for time in the rotation following a great spring camp
along with Righter who played on special teams primarily in 2007.
Notable: A linebacker has led the Ichabods in tackles five of
the six seasons under defensive coordinator Chris Brown and the
Ichabods’ 4-4 system. The lone year someone other than a linebacker
led the team in stops was in 2002 when a free safety led the team
in tackles.
Quotable: “This defense is built for linebackers,” Schurig said.
“We expect continued success out of our group this season and look
for them to improve on last season’s outstanding year as this could
be the best overall group we’ve had.”
Defensive Secondary
Who’s Back: Xavier Beckford who started six games playing in
10 last season will help to anchor the cornerbacks. Beckford had 20
tackles and two interceptions. At the other corner shows Jake Forck
who played in 11 games last season. At free safety is sophomore
Casey Curran who played in eight games as a freshman is listed as
the starter entering camp, but he will be pushed by junior Marcus
Shanahan who saw action in nine games.
Who’s New: Junior transfer Alex Harbison will push for playing
time after joining the Ichabods from Diablo Valley where he had
four interceptions in two seasons. Redshirt freshman Terry Grimmett,
a converted wide receiver and Freddie Lavan will push the
starters for playing time as will true freshman Pierre Desir, who is
Michael Wilhoite
Ben Bianchino
Mitch Birt
the only freshman listed on the depth chart entering fall camp.
Notable: Last season, Ichabod defensive backs recorded 14 of
the 23 interceptions for Washburn.
Quotable: “We’re confident in our defensive backs to be able to
shutdown our opponent’s best receivers each week,” Schurig said.
“They are fast and physical on the outside and our free safeties have
good anticipation in their coverages.”
Special Teams
Who’s Back: Sophomore placekicker Andrew Knight is the
only returning kicker for the Ichabods this season. Knight hit 32 of
34 point after touchdown attempts. Fellow sophomore Austin Hills
is slated to handle the punting duties and will look to continue last
season’s success as the Ichabods led the nation in opponent punt
return net yardage. In the kick return game, Terrance Lowe, Brandon
Walker and Lloyd Bias all returned kicks and Casey Curran
solidified himself as the team’s punt returner after averaging 10.8
yards per return.
Who’s New: True freshman Garrett Cummings will push for
the kickoff and placekicking duties. Normally an incoming placekicker
has to adjust to a one-inch kicking tee for college football
instead of the two-inch tee which is used in high school, but Cummings
spent his senior season at Silver Lake kicking from the college
regulation tee.
Notable: The Ichabods led the MIAA in net punting with a
38.2 average.
Quotable: “Our return teams will be solid as always and we
are looking for more consistent production from our kicking game
when called upon,” Schurig said.
The MIAA
This season, the Ichabods will face a new MIAA opponent in
Nebraska-Omaha in the regular season finale on Nov. 8 in Yager
Stadium. The Mavericks are joining the MIAA and taking the place
of Southwest Baptist in the football schedule while the Bearcats
will play as an independent NCAA Division II member this season.
SBU will still compete as an MIAA school in the other sports the
school sponsors.
The Mavericks are rejoining a conference set up much like the
Central States Intercollegiate Athletic Conference when fellow
MIAA schools Washburn, Pittsburg State, Missouri Southern,
Missouri Western, Fort Hays State and Emporia State made up
much of the CSIC.
However in football, the Ichabods have not played the Mavericks,
who went 10-1 last season falling in the second round of the NCAA
Playoffs after receiving a first round bye, since the 1973 season when
the Ichabods fell 13-7 on Sept. 29.
The Story Behind Mr. Ichabod
The name “Ichabod” was derived from the first name
of Ichabod Washburn, an early benefactor of the university.
Ichabod Washburn was born in Kingston, Mass., on
Aug. 11, 1798.
In 1831, he began what was his life
work - and the pride of Worchester, Mass.,
- when he essayed the drawing of wire. He
was co-founder of Washburn and Moen
Manufacturing (later American
Steel and Wire).
His own lack of formal education
made him acutely aware of
its importance. When approached
by the residents of Topeka to help
save the ailing Lincoln College, Ichabod
Washburn responded with a $25,000
gift. In May, 1869, Lincoln College
was renamed Washburn College
in recognition of his outstanding
contribution.
Until 1938, there was no
graphic representation or any particular characteristics
associated with the mascot. During the 1937-38 school
year, the editors of the KAW yearbook decided that such
items were important to the university and began to
accept suggestions for a design of Mr. Ichabod. The
adopted design was drawn by Bradbury Thompson
(BA ’34).
The following ex planatory material
ac companied the first representation of an
Ichabod in the KAW: “He has courage and
enthusiasm as shown by his
brisk walk. He is democratic
and courteous, for he tips his
hat as he passes. Sincere in his
search for truth and knowledge,
he studiously carries a book under
his arm. His friendly smile makes
you like him. He is neatly dressed
and he fits well into his generation
… but adopts himself with equal
ease to any change in life.
WASHBURN UNIVERSITY
Recruiting in-state priority No. 1
for the Ichabod coaching staff
The 2008 Washburn Ichabod roster features 39 homegrown Kansans. In only
his seventh season as the Ichabods’ head coach, Craig Schurig has put a premium
on recruiting the best players in Kansas.
“Our first recruiting priority will always
be in Kansas. We should and will do the
best job contacting the best players in
Kansas and recruit them to Washburn.
For high school seniors, we want to be
their first choice for college based on
our program and the University.”
