Dear Colleagues,
Welcome to Melbourne for the 2012
WAZA Conference.
We are proud and honored to be hosting
the 67th World Association of Zoos and
Aquariums Annual Conference (WAZA)
in the month of our 150th birthday.
Melbourne is an interesting and
culturally diverse city. The laneways
and restaurant culture ensure good
food and excellent coffee experiences.
The City faces onto the Yarra River
providing ample opportunity for walks
and exercise. The social program of the
conference will make the most of the
region with a visit to the Healesville
Sanctuary and a Yarra Valley winery.
The Gala Dinner at Crown Casino will add
a touch of glamour to proceedings.
The overarching theme of the 67th
WAZA is ‘Fighting Extinction.’ The future
of zoos is dependent on our ability to
tackle the extinction crisis and to deliver
measurable conservation outcomes.
WAZA is the unifying organisation for
the world zoo and aquarium community.
It has more than 300 members
including leading zoos and aquariums,
regional and national associations of
zoos and aquariums, as well as some
affiliate organisations from around
the world. Together, we are ‘United for
Conservation’.
Fighting Extinction of threatened
species is a global effort and zoos and
aquariums around the world can and
do play a key role in creating reserve
populations of endangered species. Zoos
and aquariums also do important and
effective work in helping to reduce the
human threats to wildlife in its natural
environment.
Zoos Victoria welcomes the opportunity
to share and debate the challenges
and opportunities faced in Fighting
Extinction. Zoos Victoria has committed
to ensuring that “No Victorian,
terrestrial, vertebrate species will
become extinct on our watch”.
This commitment spans breeding and
recovery programs and encouraging
conservation action from our visitors as
they connect with our amazing animals.
We look forward to sharing these
connections with you.
Extinction is not an inevitable outcome.
Extinction can be defeated if we
work together and stand “United for
Conservation.”
I welcome all WAZA delegates to
Melbourne and to Zoos Victoria for the
67th conference. We will share in an
inspiring and intellectually challenging
professional program, but I’m also
confident that we will engage in a
stimulating social and cultural program
in the context of Melbourne Zoo’s 150th
Anniversary celebrations.
67TH ANNUAL CONFERENCE OF WAZA 3

INFORMATION
ABOUT THE CITY
OF MELBOURNE
Melbourne is very much about
lifestyle. It is no huge surprise
to residents that their city has
recently been ranked as the
world’s most liveable city.
4 67TH ANNUAL CONFERENCE OF WAZA
Melburnians love the city’s vibrant energy,
restaurants, fashion boutiques, caféfilled
laneways, cool bars, unbeatable
galleries, spacious parks and village-like
inner suburbs, each with its own special
character. Melbourne is a young city and
as such it never sits still. Modern, cuttingedge
designs add to the fascinating mix
of heritage architecture and ensure the
skyline is constantly changing.
Each year Melbourne plays host to
tens of thousands of interstate and
overseas visitors who come to see the
Australian Open Tennis Championships,
the Australian Grand Prix, the Australian
500CC Motorcycle Grand Prix, Spring
Racing Carnival, the Australian Football
League Grand Final and many more
special events.
The inner City of Melbourne municipality
covers 37.6 sq km and has a residential
population of around 98,860 (as of 2011).
On an average day, around 805,000
people use the city, and Melbourne
hosts over a million international visitors
each year.
All of these residents, workers, shoppers
and travellers can take a break in one of
the around 145,000 cafe or restaurant
seats, or walk through some of its 471
hectares of parkland.
They can visit Melbourne’s tallest
building, the 300m high Eureka Tower,
or its oldest building, the Mitre Tavern,
built in 1837.
The entire Melbourne metropolitan area
covers 7,694 sq km and has a population
of around 4.1 million.
Melbourne’s population is made up
of many groups of people of all ages
and from many different cultures. City
residents include young professionals,
international students and older couples
looking to enjoy everything the city has
to offer now that the kids have grown up
and left home.
The City of Melbourne respectfully
acknowledges that it is located on the
traditional land of the Kulin Nation.
This special place is now known by its
European name of Melbourne.
Today, Melbourne is one of the great
multicultural cities of the world and
is a significant meeting place. For the
Wurundjeri, Boonerwrung, Taungurong,
Djajawurrung and the Wathaurung which
make up the Kulin Nation, Melbourne
has always been an important meeting
place and location for events of social,
educational, sporting and cultural
significance.

Melburnians love the city’s vibrant energy,
restaurants, fashion boutiques, café-filled
laneways, cool bars, unbeatable galleries,
spacious parks and village-like inner suburbs,
each with its own special character.
67TH ANNUAL CONFERENCE OF WAZA 5

MELBOURNE
ZOO
In October 2012 Melbourne
Zoo will celebrate its 150th
anniversary as a zoo on the
present Royal Park site. This
makes us the oldest zoo in
Australia and part of the unique
alumni of zoos throughout the
world over 150 years old.
6 67TH ANNUAL CONFERENCE OF WAZA

Today’s modern zoo has come a long
way from our humble beginnings as an
Acclimatisation Society, with a charter to
introduce and acclimatise animals to the
newly established colony of Victoria.
The initial layout of the 55 acre
Melbourne Zoo was based on the designs
of London Zoo. We started life in a large
dry paddock surrounded by a meagre
fence and a jumble of eclectic animals
both domestic and wild. Some of the first
species on display were pheasants, quail,
monkeys and several native Australian
mammals. ‘Pesky camels’ were part of
our initial collection and were often used
on expeditions into Australia’s
‘untamed interior’.
Melbourne Zoo today is a modern,
conservation focused zoo with over 282
different species delighting nearly 1.2
million visitors each year. Melbourne Zoo
is also part of the Zoos Victoria family
that includes Healesville Sanctuary, a
native Australian wildlife and cultural zoo
set in a beautiful natural bush setting; and
Werribee Open Range Zoo which provides
open-range and up close adventures
featuring grassland animals of Africa,
North America, Asia and Australia.
As an urban zoo surrounded by
Royal Park, the largest park space in
Melbourne, we are minutes from a
thriving modern city with a current
population of just over 4 million.
Melbourne was recently voted the
world’s most liveable city in the
Economist Intelligence Unit’s latest
survey and the relationship between the
city population and Melbourne Zoo is
close. Melbournians are extremely proud
of ‘their’ zoo.
Zoos Victoria’s vision is to become the
world’s leading zoo-based conservation
organisation by embracing the challenge
to engage visitors in conservation and
enable them to take actions that directly
benefit wildlife. We are delivering
conservation outcomes through our
three zoos and committed to fighting
animal extinctions locally and abroad,
prioritising our efforts to saving native
species living within our own backyard.
We have a commitment to ensure that no
Victorian terrestrial vertebrate species
will go extinct on our watch.
We are applying our specialist skills in
the captive holding and management
of threatened species; working closely
with partners to ensure success in the
wild; and using our unique position
to influence behaviour changes
within communities in support of wild
populations and habitats.
Much has changed in 150 years at
Melbourne Zoo; however the dedication
of staff, care of our animals and the
passion of our visitors has remained
constant. The Zoo is still about animals
and the connections between people and
those animals.
Shopping Tour & Lunch
Tour departs at 10.00am and concludes
at 1.00pm with lunch at Caboose
Canteen in Federation Square.
Dress: casual, flat shoes recommended.
Melbourne is a shopping mecca, but often
it is difficult to find some of the spots
locals love! And what better way to do it
on an indulgent exploration of the city
on foot. The Lanes and Arcades tour is
the best way to see the creative designer
corners of the city in a limited time.
Enjoy a casual stroll, with a passionate
guide, through the back streets, and
beautiful historic lanes and arcades of
Melbourne city, discovering some of their
architectural highlights, street art, and
historical tales. Like many worldly cities
there are fabulous malls, and department
stores, but the unique city feel does not
always come through.
This tour is about seeing the smaller
independent retailers proudly selling
local Melbourne product. Hiding in
basements or seemingly private buildings
are many of the country’s emerging
creative talents, where one off pieces are
not uncommon.
Melbourne is thriving with small
businesses, and you will be amazed at
what they offer - fashion, food, art, music,
chocolate, accessories, vintage and more.
Includes morning tea & lunch. The walk is
approx 2 km & heels are not advised.
