Annual Christmas Tree for Downtown Square
The 2011 Christmas Tree was chosen from the property of a generous city resident who was
willing to part with their tree to be placed on Central Square in downtown Youngstown. Diamond
Steel donated their time and equipment to assist the city forester in removing the tree. The city
forester also decorated the tree in preparation for the city’s annual tree lighting which was held
December 3.
The forestry program which is a division of the Park department, not only handles the removal of
the annual Christmas tree but is also responsible for the maintenance of city owned trees on
residential streets and in the city parks. The forester was successful in removing 146 trees and
pruned 160 trees from city property this past year. The tree work completed qualified the city for a
Tree City USA designation through the Arbor Day Foundation. The 7th Ward Citizens Coalition
along with the Boulevard Block Watch and the Treez Please organizations assisted in acquiring this
designation by planting 36 trees in the city.
Programs - Summer Day Camp
Every year the Department of Parks & Recreation sponsors an eight week
Summer Day Camp program at six park sites which enabled over 700
children from the community the opportunity to experience recreation that
any child would enjoy. This year from June15 through August 10th, the
campers participated in weekly sports tournaments which included baseball,
basketball, football and volleyball. A double dutch jump rope tournament
was also held. Winners in the events were given basketballs, frisbees, water
bottles, backpacks and school supplies for prizes. Field trips to Chuck E
Cheese, Youngstown Skating Rink, Mahoning Valley Bowling Lanes and
Wagon Trails Animal Park were enjoyed by many. Also, the children were
given the opportunity to swim at North Side Pool, experience track and
field day, an end of the season picnic and a trip to the Great Lakes Science
Center. The program also had special guests, Heart Reach Ministries and
the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, talk to the children about citizenship
and stewardship. The American Red Cross of the Mahoning Valley also
visited the park sites to educate the children on the topic of safety at home
which included CPR techniques. Other educational aspects of the program
involved a cultural arts unit entitled “Welcome to Mexico” which taught the
campers the history and customs of Mexico and an African American
cultural study featuring Lebron James’s life and career as a pro basketball
player.
Annual Report 2011 12
Arts and craft sessions were also a part of the
program and free breakfast and lunch was
served daily to the children through a grant
from the Ohio Department of Education.
The entire program is supervised by an
experienced and trained staff who embrace
the opportunity to mentor and make a
difference in the lives of the children of the
community who participate.
Children are our most precious possession,
the slogan of the Park department, is
significant to this program and it’s success.
