Course Statement for Grade 12 College Apprenticeship Mathematics
1. Course: MAP4C1
Textbook: Foundations for College Mathematics 12; Pearson
2. Course Content:
This course equips students with the mathematical knowledge and skills they will need in many
college programs. Students will investigate properties of exponential functions and develop skills in
manipulating exponential expressions, solve problems and investigate financial applications involving
compound interest and annuities, and apply mathematics in making informed decisions
accommodations and career choices. Students will solve problems involving the application of
principles of geometry and measurement and solve problems involving trigonometry in triangles.
This course is divided into five broad curriculum areas as follows:
Applications of Trigonometry
Data Management
Applications of Geometry, Measurement
Personal Finance
Mathematical Models
3. Required Materials:
Bring to class every day:
- a pencil, eraser, a ruler, graph paper, scientific calculator
- a notebook or binder with enough paper for notes and class work
- the textbook.
4. Assessment, Learning Skills And Evaluation
Formative Assessment will be ongoing and is intended to provide students with feedback for
improvement.
Learning Skills -Works Independently, Teamwork, Organization, Work Habits, and Initiativewill
be assessed throughout the course. These are not considered in the determination of the
final grade.
Evaluation
Student performance will encompass the following criteria as they relate to a particular task.
The weightings are as follows:
Knowledge / Understanding 35 %
Inquiry & Thinking 15 %
Communication 15 %
Application / Making Connections 35 %.
70% of the final mark will be based on term work: tests, quizzes, assignments.
30% of the final mark will be based on the exam and/or final summative activities
The following table provides a summary description of achievement in each percentage grade
range and corresponding level of achievement:
Percentage
Grade
Range
Achievement
Level
Summary Description
80 - 100% Level 4 A very high to outstanding level of
achievement.
Achievement is above the provincial standard.
70 – 79% Level 3 A high level of achievement. Achievement is
at the provincial standard.
60 – 69% Level 2 A moderate level of achievement.
Achievement is below, but approaching, the
provincial standard.
50 – 59% Level 1 A passable level of achievement.
Achievement is below the provincial standard.
Below 50%
Insufficient achievement of curriculum
expectations.
A credit will not be granted.
5. Absence, Lates and Missed Assignments
Evaluation activities are due on the date or within the time frame specified by the teacher. If a
student misses an evaluation, the missed evaluation will normally be due or completed on the day
of the student’s return to school. Students are expected to submit all assignments within the time
frame specified by the teacher. Teachers will consider extenuating circumstances when
assignments are late. If an assignment is late, 5% may be deducted per school day, up to a
maximum of 50%. Once assignments have been returned to students, any late submissions may
receive a mark of zero.
6. Expectations of the Students
All students are expected to:
Attend regularly.
Participate in lessons.
Follow classroom rules.
Bring all required materials to class.
Complete all work in a neat organized manner.
Be positive, cooperative, and polite.
7. Homework
In order to be successful in any mathematics course, it is expected that students will do all of the
homework assigned by the teacher. If a student encounters difficulty, it is expected that he or she
will seek help from another student or his or her teacher. By making effective use of class time,
students can significantly reduce the time required to do homework.
Please sign this and return it to the teacher as soon as possible. Should you have any questions or
concerns, please contact the teacher at 542-5545.
