<strong>The</strong> Pines & <strong>The</strong> Preserve


<strong>The</strong> <strong>Minnesota</strong> <strong>Section</strong> Junior <strong>PGA</strong> had its 18 th Annual <strong>Minnesota</strong><br />

versus Wisconsin Cup Matches at StoneRidge Golf Club in<br />

Stillwater, MN on June 28-29, <strong>2015</strong>. This is a two-day Ryder Cup<br />

type-event that consists <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> first day being four-ball matches and<br />

<strong>the</strong> second day is single match play. Each section has a team<br />

containing 12 boys and 12 girls who represent <strong>the</strong>ir section in <strong>the</strong><br />

event. A point is awarded for every match won outright and half a<br />

point to each team for ties.<br />

After <strong>the</strong> first day <strong>of</strong> four-ball match play, Wisconsin scored 7.5<br />

points leading <strong>Minnesota</strong> who had 4.5. <strong>The</strong> second day was close,<br />

but eventually Wisconsin pulled out <strong>the</strong> victory 23-13 combining<br />

<strong>the</strong> two day scores. Wisconsin holds <strong>the</strong> lead in <strong>the</strong> all-time series<br />

12-6 after this year’s win.<br />

<strong>Minnesota</strong> Junior Championship qualifying is finished with a<br />

total <strong>of</strong> seven qualifiers leading up to <strong>the</strong> Championship event at<br />

Giant’s Ridge in Biwabik, MN on <strong>July</strong> 15-16, <strong>2015</strong>.<br />

Coon Rapids, MN—<strong>The</strong> <strong>Minnesota</strong> Golf Hall <strong>of</strong> Fame announced <strong>the</strong> <strong>2015</strong> Class <strong>of</strong> Hall <strong>of</strong> Fame inductees:<br />

Gloria Bjork Brandness, Dan Croonquist, Alissa (Herron) Super, and Dick Haugen. Members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> group will<br />

be inducted into <strong>the</strong> <strong>Minnesota</strong> Golf Hall <strong>of</strong> Fame at various allied golf association events throughout <strong>the</strong><br />

year. Established in 1987, <strong>the</strong> <strong>Minnesota</strong> Golf Hall <strong>of</strong> Fame recognizes <strong>Minnesota</strong>ns for <strong>the</strong>ir outstanding<br />

contributions to <strong>the</strong> game.<br />

Gloria Bjork Brandness<br />

Born and raised in St. Paul, Minn., Gloria Bjork Brandness started playing golf at Keller Golf Course and<br />

during <strong>the</strong> 1950’s was a force in <strong>Minnesota</strong> Women’s public golf winning <strong>the</strong> <strong>Minnesota</strong> Women’s State<br />

Public Links four times and finishing runner-up two o<strong>the</strong>r times. Brandness also won <strong>the</strong> <strong>Minnesota</strong><br />

Women’s Amateur in 1956.<br />

Dan Croonquist<br />

Born and raised in Moundsview, Minn., Dan Croonquist began winning championships at an early age by<br />

winning <strong>the</strong> 1975 State High School Championship. Following High School, Croonquist continued his winning<br />

ways at Arizona State University by winning <strong>the</strong> 1979 PAC-10 Championship and earning All-America honors.<br />

Returning home from college, Croonquist won <strong>the</strong> <strong>Minnesota</strong> Golf Champions and <strong>Minnesota</strong> State Open in<br />

1979 and <strong>the</strong> Open again in 1980. Croonquist also finished runner-up in <strong>the</strong> State Open twice and finished in<br />

<strong>the</strong> top ten for ten consecutive years.<br />

After a short stint as a pr<strong>of</strong>essional, Croonquist returned to <strong>the</strong> amateur ranks and won <strong>the</strong> 1990 <strong>Minnesota</strong><br />

State Amateur.<br />

Alissa (Herron) Super<br />

Born into a family <strong>of</strong> talented golfers, Alissa Super won her first state title in 1990 at <strong>the</strong> <strong>Minnesota</strong> Junior<br />

Girls’ State Championship. She is a three-time women’s state amateur champion, having won <strong>the</strong> <strong>Minnesota</strong><br />

Women’s State Amateur three consecutive years, from 1996 to 1998, a two-time <strong>Minnesota</strong> Women’s State<br />

Match Play champion, winning in 1994 and 2000, and was twice honored as <strong>the</strong> MGA Women’s Player <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Year, in 1998 and 1999. At 26, Super captured her lone national title, advancing through match play at <strong>the</strong><br />

1999 U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur at Cherokee Town & Country Club, outside Atlanta, Ga. She beat <strong>the</strong> 50-<br />

year-old veteran Carol Semple Thompson, 3 and 2 in <strong>the</strong> first round, and never looked back, eventually<br />

meeting Leland Beckel in <strong>the</strong> finals, and winning 1-up.<br />

Dick Haugen<br />

During his twenty-four year tenure as club manager at North Oaks Golf Club, Dick Haugen left an impression<br />

on everyone he met. Haugen dedicated himself to his club and its membership and helped provide excellent<br />

customer service daily. Outside <strong>of</strong> his duties at North Oaks, Haugen was also active in <strong>the</strong> Upper Midwest<br />

Club Managers Association <strong>of</strong> America and served on <strong>the</strong>ir Board <strong>of</strong> Directors for ten years including two<br />

terms as President in 2000 and 2011.<br />

Haugen also volunteered for <strong>the</strong> <strong>Minnesota</strong> Golf Association for over twenty years, serving on several<br />

committees including <strong>the</strong> Rebholz Award and Government Relations committee, and also volunteered as a<br />

Tournament <strong>of</strong>ficial.


May 13, <strong>2015</strong> (Coon Rapids, MN) – <strong>The</strong> <strong>Minnesota</strong> <strong>Section</strong> <strong>PGA</strong> Foundation announced today that ten programs<br />

have been selected to receive grants for player development through <strong>the</strong> George Waters Memorial Grant<br />

Program. <strong>The</strong> George Waters Memorial Grant Program was established to help worthy <strong>PGA</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essionals and<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r golf related Player Development or Golf in School programs fur<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong>ir goals in player development with<br />

an emphasis on junior golf, disabled golfers or Special Olympics athletes. <strong>The</strong> Program was developed from <strong>the</strong><br />

gracious support <strong>of</strong> <strong>PGA</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essional George Waters. Waters, owner <strong>of</strong> George’s Driving Range and a <strong>PGA</strong><br />

Member for more than 50 years, enjoyed teaching <strong>the</strong> game <strong>of</strong> golf to all interested including juniors. <strong>The</strong> ten<br />

programs selected to receive support in <strong>2015</strong> include:<br />

“Golf in <strong>the</strong> Schools” Program – Chisago Lakes Golf Course (Third Grant)<br />

<strong>The</strong> “Golf in <strong>the</strong> Schools” program is designed to introduce every third through fifth grade student in <strong>the</strong> Chisago<br />

Lakes School District to <strong>the</strong> game <strong>of</strong> golf. <strong>The</strong> program will include three class sessions during school and a field<br />

trip to <strong>the</strong> golf course.<br />

Wild Marsh Golf Club – City <strong>of</strong> Buffalo Junior Golf Program (Third Grant)<br />

<strong>The</strong> program is a joint effort between Wild Marsh Golf Club, Buffalo Heights Golf Course and <strong>the</strong> city <strong>of</strong> Buffalo,<br />

MN to introduce children ages 7-12 to <strong>the</strong> game.<br />

Northwest Junior Golf League – Bunker Hills GC and Rush Creek GC (Second Grant)<br />

Program will be conducted at four facilities, Bunker Hills GC, Cedar Creek GC, Riverwood National GC, and Rush<br />

Creek GC and will bring junior golfers ages 8-14 toge<strong>the</strong>r for on-course instruction and competitions.<br />

<strong>The</strong> First Tee Saint Paul – Highland Friendship Club Golf Program (Second Grant)<br />

<strong>The</strong> golf program was established to expand <strong>the</strong> First Tee’s relationship in providing golf opportunities to<br />

individuals with disabilities ranging from teenagers to adults. <strong>The</strong> Highland Friendship Club has more than 250<br />

members with disabilities that will have <strong>the</strong> opportunity to be part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> program.<br />

Ramsey County First Tee Saint Paul Scholarships<br />

<strong>The</strong> program was established to provide scholarships to underprivileged youths to attend <strong>the</strong> First Tee Saint<br />

Paul’s First Tee program in Saint Paul.<br />

“Golf in <strong>the</strong> Schools” Program – Wilson Golf Group and Mahtomedi Schools<br />

<strong>The</strong> “Golf in <strong>the</strong> Schools” program is designed to introduce every third through fifth grade student in <strong>the</strong><br />

Mahtomedi School District to <strong>the</strong> game <strong>of</strong> golf. <strong>The</strong> program includes class sessions during school using SNAG<br />

golf equipment.<br />

“Golf in <strong>the</strong> Schools” Program – Braemar Golf Dome & Edina High School<br />

<strong>The</strong> “Golf in <strong>the</strong> Schools” program is designed to introduce High School students in <strong>the</strong> Edina School District to<br />

<strong>the</strong> game <strong>of</strong> golf. <strong>The</strong> program includes class sessions during school at <strong>the</strong> Braemar Golf Dome.<br />

“Swing Fore it Golf Camp” Program – Rush Creek Golf Club<br />

<strong>The</strong> “Swing Fore it Golf Camp” is designed to introduce Special Olympic athletes to <strong>the</strong> game <strong>of</strong> golf. <strong>The</strong> weekly<br />

program introduces athletes beginning to learn golf as well as those that already know <strong>the</strong> game.<br />

“Courage Kenny” Adaptive Golf Program – Three Rivers Park District<br />

<strong>The</strong> “Courage Kenny” golf program helps introduce <strong>the</strong> game <strong>of</strong> golf to individuals with physical challenges that<br />

include amputees, spinal and brain injuries and a variety <strong>of</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r diseases and physical challenges.


<strong>The</strong> <strong>Minnesota</strong> <strong>Section</strong> <strong>PGA</strong> is pleased to say that eight junior golfers have been chosen to receive <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>2015</strong> Valspar <strong>Section</strong> <strong>PGA</strong> Foundation Junior Golf Scholarship. This award is given to those who<br />

display excellence and exceed expectation in <strong>the</strong> criterion <strong>of</strong> high school grades, class rank, ACT/SAT,<br />

and extracurricular activities. <strong>The</strong> recipients <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>2015</strong> Valspar Scholarship include: Caroline<br />

Andrews <strong>of</strong> Ham Lake, MN, Nate Bormann <strong>of</strong> Perham, MN, Elle Carlson <strong>of</strong> Sioux Falls, SD, Thomas<br />

Clark <strong>of</strong> Edina, MN, Will Holmgren <strong>of</strong> Corcoran, MN, Mat<strong>the</strong>w Kratz <strong>of</strong> Apple Valley, MN, Samantha<br />

Lee <strong>of</strong> Plymouth, MN, and Maxwell Redetzke <strong>of</strong> Lakeville, MN.<br />

Will Holmgren Mat<strong>the</strong>w Kratz Samantha Lee Maxwell Redetzke<br />

Beginning in <strong>the</strong> fall, <strong>the</strong>se eight junior golfers will be receiving scholarships <strong>of</strong> $4,000.00 to apply<br />

towards <strong>the</strong>ir college tuition over <strong>the</strong> course <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> next four years. <strong>The</strong> scholarships are presented by<br />

Valspar, <strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>ficial sponsor <strong>of</strong> <strong>Minnesota</strong> <strong>Section</strong> <strong>PGA</strong> Junior Golf and <strong>Minnesota</strong> <strong>Section</strong> <strong>PGA</strong><br />

Foundation. Since 1995, <strong>the</strong> <strong>Minnesota</strong> <strong>Section</strong> <strong>PGA</strong> Foundation has awarded over $300,000 in<br />

scholarship funds.
