"CTI NEWSFLASHThe Voice of IndustryJUNE, 2013EAC ESTABLISHES A SECTORALCOMMITTEE IN INDUSTRIALISATIONStrong institutions andcoordination mechanisms forindustrial development are key toenable the region build a strongindustrial base and pursue itsindustrialisation goals at all levelsof integration."The EAC regional integration has entered a phase where industrial development isexpected to be the key component of its cooperation agenda. The EAC has alreadyopened up to free movement of capital, labour and services via the coming into forceof the East African Common Market Protocol on 1 st July 2010. The regulatory frameworksto facilitate free trade among Partner States have been put in place.Strong institutions and coordination mechanisms for industrial development are key toenable the region build a strong industrial base and pursue its industrialisation goals at alllevels of integration. However, it has been observed that the productive capacity of the region is characterisedby low intra-regional trade, food insecurity, growing trade imbalance among EAC PartnerStates as well as between EAC and third countries, and the influx of counterfeit productsand an assortment of imported low-tech products which could otherwise be produced in theregion. The export performance of the region, just as in the case of the African continenthas been low. It is intended that the implementation of the EAC Industrialisation Policy andStrategy will address these challenges facing the region and facilitate transformation of theeconomies of the region into middle-income status within 20 years. The EAC-COMESA-SADC Tripartite Free Trade Area (FTA) is currently being negotiated.
