CTI Newsletter 139:Layout 1 8/13/08 8:49 AM Page 6www.cti.co.tzMonthly Newsletter of the Confederation of Tanzania Industriesthem in order to increasecontribution of the manufacturingsector to the economic growth.“The tendency of African countriesof exporting raw materials instead ofvalue-added products is by and largecontributing to the existence ofpoverty in the African continent,”the president said, adding that valueaddedgoods fetch higher prices inthe domestic and export markets. In that regard, he underscored the needfor a country to have strategies whichare designed to halt the export ofprimary goods step by steady step. Atthe firm level, President Kikwete urgedeach manufacturing firm in Tanzania toset targets for increasing its turnover by10 per cent, as well as growth of exportsby 5 per cent each year.He said these targets are attainable byfirms, partly due to the existence ofvarious preferential tradearrangements under which Tanzaniais qualified to enjoy. Some of thepreferential trade arrangementswhich Tanzanian firms are wellpositionedto take advantage of arewithin the East African Community(EAC), the Southern AfricaDevelopment Community (SADC),United States of America’s AfricaGrowth and Opportunity Act(AGOA) and EBA, the EuropeanUnion’s Everything But Armsarrangement (EBA).President Kikwete recommendedthat local firms should start takingadvantage of the opportunitiesoffered within the EAC markets ifonly because selling to the EACMember States is not as difficult asexporting to EU markets.“Let us take advantage of the markets ofour neighbours before we move on toother markets such as Europe, the US,China, Canada, Japan and India –which are more complicated markets,”President Kikwete counselled.According to the President who isalso the Patron of CTI, Tanzanianfirms will only succeed in theirendeavours if they boost investmentin marketing. In that regard, heurged local companies to stopcomplaining and, instead, seriouslyinvest in aggressive marketing of theirproducts. The PMAYA ceremony which waspreceded by the usual AnnualBusiness Dinner, saw the presidentformally presenting Awards to 13firms which were adjudicatedwinners in different categories of thecompetition.Established by CTI in 2005, theawards are aimed at enhancinghealthy business competition in thecountry’s industrial sector at thenational level.Author: Adrian Njau –PolicySpecialist Sectors (PSS)Winners PMAYA 2008 competition in a group photograph with the Guest of honour, Sponsors and Leaders of CTI during theawards presentation ceremony. The Voice of Industry 6
