<strong>Part</strong>-<strong>Time</strong> <strong>Nursing</strong> <strong>Program</strong> Application Guide – Winter 2013PROGRAM OVERVIEWThank you for your interest in the <strong>Part</strong>‐<strong>Time</strong> <strong>Nursing</strong> program at <strong>Mt</strong>. <strong>Hood</strong> <strong>Community</strong> <strong>College</strong> (<strong>MHCC</strong>). Pleasenote: Students applying for the <strong>Part</strong>‐<strong>Time</strong> program may not apply for the full‐time program.The <strong>Nursing</strong> program is both exciting and challenging, offering graduates the opportunities for employment in avariety of settings and for a lifelong career that is personally fulfilling. The program demands may pose uniquepersonal as well as academic challenges. Most students have multiple responsibilities in addition to going toschool (i.e., marriage, family, job). Success in the program takes a firm commitment, and the nursing facultymembers are here to help you succeed. <strong>Nursing</strong> is a demanding field and admission to nursing schools is a verycompetitive process. We strongly suggest you prepare well by visiting with nurses in various settings, meetingwith an advisor in order to help you with your career plans, and by reading through the application materialsthoroughly. <strong>Program</strong> information meeting dates/times can be found at www.mhcc.edu/nursing. All applicantsare highly encouraged to attend one of the hour‐long sessions before seeking academic advising or applying forthe program.This part‐time program will start Winter term 2013 and is designed to accommodate individuals with work andfamily responsibilities, who wish to pursue <strong>Nursing</strong>, but cannot attend the program full time due to personalcommitments and responsibilities. With the <strong>Part</strong>‐<strong>Time</strong> <strong>Nursing</strong> <strong>Program</strong>, the <strong>Nursing</strong> student will complete theAssociate of Applied Science Degree in <strong>Nursing</strong> in nine (9) quarters rather than the traditional seven (7) quarters,with no quarter break (i.e. summer break). The admission criteria (described below) will be the same for boththe <strong>Part</strong>‐<strong>Time</strong> <strong>Nursing</strong> <strong>Program</strong> and the Full‐<strong>Time</strong> <strong>Nursing</strong> <strong>Program</strong>.About the <strong>Program</strong>• <strong>Mt</strong>. <strong>Hood</strong> <strong>Community</strong> <strong>College</strong> (<strong>MHCC</strong>) is a member of the Oregon Consortium for <strong>Nursing</strong> Education(OCNE) and offers a competency‐based curriculum jointly developed by nursing faculties from theeight community colleges and Oregon Health Sciences University (OHSU) consortium partners. Thecore competencies address the need for nurses to be skilled in clinical judgment and critical thinking;evidence‐based practice; relationship‐centered care; interdisciplinary collaboration; assistingindividuals and families in self‐care practices for promotion of health and management of chronicand acute illness; end‐of‐life care; and teaching, delegation, leadership and supervision of caregivers.• Acceptance to the program allows for co‐admission to <strong>MHCC</strong> and OHSU nursing programs. Theprogram is designed as four years of full‐time study, with the first year devoted toprerequisite/preparatory courses (45‐credit hours minimum) required for admission to the restricted<strong>Nursing</strong> program. Successful completion of the second and third years leads to an Associate ofApplied Science (AAS) degree offered by <strong>MHCC</strong>. The OCNE curriculum continues for four additionalquarters leading to a Bachelor of Science degree in <strong>Nursing</strong> (BS,N) offered by OHSU.• The first five quarters after admission to the <strong>MHCC</strong> <strong>Nursing</strong> program are identical for the associateand bachelor's degree courses. Quarter six offers students the ability to complete the AAS degree at<strong>MHCC</strong> and provides the educational eligibility for the National Council Licensure Examination forRegistered Nurses (NCLEX‐RN) licensure testing or can be used to begin the coursework for the BS,N.The latter option allows for transferring to OHSU without any additional competitive applicationprocess. Students complete coursework for the bachelor’s degree in nursing and then becomeeligible for the NCLEX‐RN licensure exam. Students who complete the AAS degree at <strong>MHCC</strong> and passthe NCLEX‐RN exam also have the option to complete the upper division nursing courses for thebachelor’s degree in a distance‐education format with clinical experiences completed locally.(Statistics may be completed at <strong>MHCC</strong> and 15 credit hours of upper division (300 and above) nonnursingcourses must be completed through other colleges or universities.) You do not needto submit a transcript for courses taken at <strong>MHCC</strong>.o Transcripts are considered official if they are issued directly by the school or college, are mailed ordelivered in an unopened envelope and are recently dated. If <strong>MHCC</strong> holds your official transcript fromanother college for a recent admission requirement, you do not need to submit another one unless newcoursework has been completed. However, in some cases, it may be necessary to provide an updatedtranscript or verification of non‐attendance from that college. You do not need to submit a transcriptfor courses taken at <strong>MHCC</strong>. Transfer coursework from foreign Institutions must be evaluated by the application deadline by an outsidecredential evaluation service. The evaluation company must be either AACRAO Foreign Education CredentialService (www.aacrao.org) or a member of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services(NACES). For a list of NACES memberships, please refer to their website at www.naces.org. The evaluationmust be a course‐by‐course evaluation with an official copy submitted to the AR&R Office. The courseworkmust qualify as a post‐secondary level, have comparable <strong>MHCC</strong> accreditation status and be parallel incontent to <strong>MHCC</strong> coursework. The outside evaluation must also be completed for secondary level educationfor any evaluation of that coursework toward <strong>MHCC</strong> admission requirements. Non‐accredited college transcripts will not be considered in the evaluation of your application nor can theybe considered toward any degree requirements. If an applicant has taken an equivalent course elsewhere which has a course number, title, or credit hour(s)different from the <strong>MHCC</strong> course, the applicant is strongly encouraged to contact <strong>MHCC</strong>’s Academic Advisingand Transfer Center for an unofficial transcript review as far in advance of the application deadline aspossible.PREREQUISITE COURSES• The cumulative GPA for all prerequisite courses must be at least a 3.0.• Each prerequisite course must be taken for a letter grade and must be completed with a grade of "C" orhigher.• The required mathematics, anatomy and physiology (A&P) I, II, III; nutrition; and microbiology must becompleted within the last seven years (during or after 2005). All grades from repeated anatomy &physiology I, II and III courses are included in the anatomy & physiology I, II, or III GPA computation.The following courses must be completed by the application deadline date.• A&P I (BI231) (4 credits) – Anatomy & Physiology I, first course in the full sequence of human anatomy andphysiology with laboratory (200 level or above).Note: CH103 and BI112 are perquisites for BI231 at <strong>MHCC</strong>. Students who complete the A&P courseswithout these prerequisites do not have to take CH103 and BI112 to be eligible to apply at <strong>MHCC</strong>. However,a biology with genetics course must be documented before the start of the nursing program courses. Also,discretionary points can be earned for CH103 and BI112.• MTH95 or higher (5 credits)This admission requirement can be met in one of two ways:• Completion of MTH95 or a higher level mathematics course, excluding MTH211(Note: completion of MTH95 will not count toward the BSN degree.)OR• Placement into MTH105/111 on the <strong>MHCC</strong> <strong>College</strong> Placement Test. (No credit given)If the admission math requirement is met by placement into MTH105 or higher, students must selectfrom any other prerequisite courses or microbiology to attain the minimum 30 credits. If accepted to the <strong>Part</strong>‐<strong>Time</strong> <strong>Nursing</strong> program, ALL of these courses must be completed bythe end of fall term, 2012, except for BI234 Microbiology. BI234 must be completed prior to the beginning of the2 nd term of nursing.Anatomy and Physiology (A&P) BI232, BI233 (8 credits). Remainder of the full sequence of human anatomyand physiology with laboratory (200 level or above), inclusive of all body systems.Biology Course with Genetics (4‐5 credit hours)Introduction to Genetics (a course or a module within a course): Any human biology course that includes ahuman genetics component in the course and indicates this inclusion in the college catalog course description.This requirement may not be met through the Microbiology or Anatomy and Physiology courses.English Composition, WR121, WR122 (8 credit hours)Requirement is waived with completion of a bachelor’s degree or higher. Students who have completed abachelor’s degree by the application deadline must select from any of the other prerequisite courses ormicrobiology to attain the minimum 30 credit hours. Students who have taken these courses prior to Summer2010 may use the 3‐credit hours version to satisfy the WR121 and WR122 requirement.Nutrition, FN225 (4 credit hours)Class covers biological functions, dietary sources of essential nutrients and the relationship of diet to health. Thiscourse must be completed with a grade of “C” or better within the last seven years (during or after 2005).Human Development, PSY237 (4 credit hours)The course must cover the developmental process of human life covering the full life span and must becompleted with a grade of “C” or better. In addition, PSY237 does fulfill <strong>MHCC</strong>’s human relations generaleducation degree requirement.• Human Development courses that cover only part of a life span will not be accepted.• PSY201 is the prerequisite to PSY237 at <strong>MHCC</strong> and can count as a Social Science elective.Social Science (6‐7 credit hours)A minimum of six credit hours which can include PSY201 General Psychology. You may select from any collegelevelsocial science distribution course listed in the <strong>MHCC</strong> 2011 – 2012 <strong>College</strong> Catalog available atwww.mhcc.edu/catalog.Humanities (3 credit hours)For the <strong>Nursing</strong> program, skill‐oriented humanities will not fulfill the humanities requirement. You may selectfrom any college‐level humanities distribution course listed in the <strong>MHCC</strong> 2011 – 2012 <strong>College</strong> Catalog availableat www.mhcc.edu/catalog.Important Notes:• Some of the nursing pre‐program courses have prerequisites such as general biology or chemistry. Microbiology: Completion of BI234 by the deadline date of April 11, 2012. (1 point)Tie Breakers: In the event that two or more applicant scores tie at the acceptance cut‐off point, <strong>MHCC</strong> willuse the breakers in the following order: 1) in‐district student; 2) completion of all prerequisite science‐basedcourses by the April 11, 2012 deadline, without having to repeat same course; 3) completion of all nonnursingcourses required in the Associate of Applied Science Degree in <strong>Nursing</strong>.UPON ACCEPTANCE Upon notification of acceptance, students must indicate in writing by the stated deadline (in the acceptanceletter) their intention to enroll or their position will be given to the next eligible alternate. If applying tomultiple schools, students are asked not to notify more than one school of acceptance of an admission offerand to immediately notify the <strong>MHCC</strong> <strong>Nursing</strong> <strong>Program</strong> Office if for any reason their acceptance decisionchanges or if their phone number or address changes. Mandatory Orientation – A mandatory orientation will be held for admitted and alternate students.Attendance is required, or the next eligible alternate will be given your assigned place in the program.Students will be informed of the orientation date, time, and location in their acceptance letter. The third quarter of Year Three offers students the ability tocomplete the AAS degree (and eligibility for NCLEX‐RN licensure testing) or can be used to begin thecoursework for the Bachelor of Science degree in <strong>Nursing</strong> (BS) or a combination of both. Fifteen credithours of non‐nursing coursework must be upper division courses (300‐400 level courses) for theBachelors Degree in <strong>Nursing</strong>.• It is important for students to be aware that residency requirements differ between OCNE schools andOHSU. Meeting the in‐state tuition residency requirement for <strong>MHCC</strong> does not ensure students will beeligible for residency and in‐state tuition at OHSU.
