Dental Hygiene
Associate of Applied Science
2014
Dear Dental Hygiene Program Applicant:
Thank you for your interest in the Dental Hygiene Program. Please read this guide thoroughly as there have been some minor but
important changes to the application process.
The Dental Hygiene curriculum is both exciting and challenging, and it offers graduates the opportunities for employment in a variety of
settings. Your degree will provide you with a lifelong career that is rewarding and personally fulfilling.
The Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) has accredited the Dental Hygiene program at Mt. Hood Community College (MHCC)
since the mid‐1970s. The website for CODA is www.ada.org.
The requisites for success in the program include a love of science, good manual dexterity, a strong commitment to ethical behavior,
and doing your best. The ability to work both independently and as a team member is a must. If these qualities describe you, the Dental
Hygiene program may be a good choice for you.
The program demands may pose unique personal as well as academic challenges. Homework and project commitments outside of
class/clinic are more demanding than general education courses, and must be prioritized as such. Applicants must be physically and
mentally able to cope with the rigors of the curriculum, and the demanding nature of the health professions. There are established
academic and clinical requirements essential to instruction which apply to all students and cannot be waived. Furthermore,
attendance is mandatory in all classes, labs and clinics. Success in the program takes a firm commitment, but the Dental Hygiene
faculty is here to help you succeed.
We strongly recommend you prepare well by doing the following:
• Visit and talk to dental hygienists in various dental clinics and settings.
• Attend one of our program information sessions. Please visit www.mhcc.edu/alliedhealthinfo to see a list of current
information sessions.
• Talk with an adviser/counselor in order to help you with your career plans.
• Prepare an economic plan to assist you in meeting program costs.
Questions about the application process should be directed to the Admissions Evaluator, Katelyn Goslin at Katelyn.Goslin@mhcc.edu;
questions about the program should be directed to Raye Ann Yapp at Rayeann.Yapp@mhcc.edu.
Sincerely,
PROGRAM MISSION AND GOALS
The mission of the Mt. Hood Community College Dental Hygiene Program is to cultivate collaborative, competent, forward‐thinking
students who will meet the ever‐changing needs of their profession and community through the delivery of evidence‐based care.
Furthermore, it is the intent of the program that all students will develop an appreciation for the professional roles of research and
teaching.
1. Prepare dental hygienists who will be able to effectively assess, diagnose, plan, implement and evaluate current dental hygiene
needs and services (ADPIE).
2. Develop appropriate and ethical decision‐making skills that guide both professional judgment and conduct in the provision of
optimal patient care.
3. Promote the values of the dental hygiene profession through service‐based activities, positive community affiliations and active
involvement in local organizations.
4. Enhance communication skills that enable students to work collaboratively with patients, their families, and across all health care
professions to provide patient‐centered care.
5. Promote positive values of overall health and wellness to the public within and outside the profession.
6. Develop effective and competent communication skills by serving all persons without discrimination, and by acknowledging and
appreciating diversity.
7. Perform continuous self‐assessment for lifelong learning and professional growth.
BOARD EXAMS AND/OR LICENSING
You must be licensed to practice dental hygiene in Oregon and any other state. In order to be licensed in Oregon, students must pass
four types of licensing exams. It is required that all graduates take these exams during or upon successful completion of the
program. If you have been convicted of a felony, please be advised that this conviction may prevent you from placement in clinical
training and from obtaining a license to practice within the field. A Dental Hygiene adviser can provide further instruction on this
matter. Students who have been previously dismissed from MHCC’s Dental Hygiene program or any other health related program
may be denied admission into the program.
DEMANDS OF THE PROGRAM
It is important to understand the mental and physical demands of the MHCC program and the career of a Dental Hygienist. This
program is rigorous and requires dedication to be successful. Many students find the coursework to be challenging – going to school
is like a full‐time job! There are faculty, staff and services here to help you be successful.
AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT INFORMATION
Federal laws have been designed to prevent discrimination of persons with disabilities. If you have a documented disability and
require any special arrangements or accommodations during your program of study, please contact Disability Services at (503) 491‐
6923 or (503) 491‐7670 (TDD). Attempts will be made to accommodate and retain qualified applicants with disabilities unless results
of evaluations indicate that given reasonable accommodation, an individual will still be unable to perform the essential functions
required by the program. Persons with questions concerning particular qualifications are encouraged to contact the Disability
Services Office to arrange an appointment for individual consultation and advice prior to application.
FINANCIAL AID
All program applicants are encouraged to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) available online
at www.fafsa.ed.gov. This application includes grants, loans, work study and even some scholarships. Information about
financial aid, including instructions for completing the FAFSA, is posted on the MHCC Financial Aid webpage:
www.mhcc.edu/FinancialAid.aspx?id=1179. To avoid missing financial aid deadlines and opportunities, it is recommended that the
FAFSA be completed on January 1 for the following academic year or at the time of program application.
what constitutes equivalency for all admission criteria and has the sole authority to inform students of their admission status.
Withholding information or giving untruthful answers to questions on this application could be cause for non‐acceptance or
dismissal from the program. If you have questions regarding admission procedures, please contact the Admissions Evaluator at
legibility, grammar, spelling, and content. For those applicants who interview, program faculty will be awarding points at that time
for work and volunteer experience. Points will be awarded on a sliding scale depending upon the length and type of experience.
