Cambio (Change)A message from the Head of SchoolAristotle noted that “Because human nature does not change, true friendship is eternal.”Experience teaches us the truth of his observation. How manytimes have we met a friend, long absent and almost forgotten, andfound instantaneous connection? I have always marveled at thereunions in the schools and colleges that I have been part of tonotice how classmates separated for decades and by geographiesthat are daunting, suddenly reconnect and find themselves notawkwardly searching for conversation but immediately andgenuinely engaged in memory, in recollection, and in affection. It is interesting to apply the same idea to an institution, to thisschool. Here we are a puzzle of different histories that coalescedover time to become the school we are today. And yet all thatwas there before, all that history, all that friendship and care andmemory survives as surely as friendship itself survives. We are in a moment of change. We have been forty years in the processof merging the roots that were the Liggett School, the Grosse PointeUniversity School, the Grosse Pointe Country Day School and theDetroit University School. We continue to evolve as we build a futurethat is secure and sure.To do this we have examined all aspects of our work and begun a processof imagining our future. That future will include initiatives in everyacademic discipline. It will stress interdisciplinary work. It will seek tosupport every student here with the skills and competencies they needto be successful. It will ensure that we have the faculty and resources toachieve our goals. The future, though, is inextricably linked to the past. This storiedcommunity rich with history and lore must also be a community ofthe future. We have pledged to ensure that the standards of academicexcellence on which all the schools that make up our foundation werebuilt endures and advances to meet contemporary needs. We invite all of you to bepartners in our work and hopethat you will find in this notjust a memory of things pastbut a goal for your future.– Dr. Joseph P. HealeyHead of School6 7

“Our fundraising program is an integral part of operating ULS andproviding our children with the many opportunities that they deserve.I know that we all have many competing demands for our time andresources. But, no investment will better the returns than the investmentwe make in our children.”– Andrew Ottaway ’84ULS Board of Trustees10 11

The Fund forexcellenceThank you for engagingin the “habit” that isexcellence at ULS.– Catherine G. RoggAssistant Head of SchoolDirector of Developmentand Alumni RelationsI recently spent some time in our Archives. Having such along and rich history provides us with decades of records, avariety of publications, historical fundraising programs andwonderful stories of student accomplishment. The 2007-08year had much to contribute to those same archives with aplethora of exciting advertising, the launch of the LiggettScholars program, dynamic athletic accomplishments, creative and daring artistic achievements, diverse collegeacceptances and successful new events. The year was spent intransition and self-discovery. The school received its ISACSaccreditation, the Board of Trustees led and completed anambitious strategic planning process, and our annual Fundfor Excellence goals were surpassed. At the beginning of the year, we changed the name of theAnnual Fund to the Fund for Excellence. This change camefrom efforts to create a name that embodied the purposeof the fund. Year after year we return to our faithful donorsand communicate with our new families and alumni themessage that our annual fund is the foundation of ourfundraising programs; it “bridges the gap” between theprice of tuition and the cost of educating each child. Themoney we raise annually helps us meet our promise toeducate our students in the best environment, with thebest teachers, for the best outcome. It provides supportacross all divisions and all programs—from lights in theclassrooms to field trips, from one-on-one teacher/studentsessions to classrooms rich in resources, from technologicalenhancements to library acquisitions. Our annual fundprovides the margin of excellence for which we strive on adaily basis. In the Archives, I ran across a large publication with onlyone word across its glossy cover in two inch, blue letters– “Excellence.” It was the campaign literature for GrossePointe University School’s Program of Excellence campaignin 1966. It begins, “The Grosse Pointe University Schoolhas many reasons for being, but one overrides all the rest.It is excellence.”This discovery was an affirmation that history repeatsitself, that our history is rooted in a tradition of excellence, and that our new name carries an old message, one thatdefines the efforts we make every day as trustees, faculty, administration, staff, students, parents and alumni.Artistotle in his wisdom once articulated what we seekto express. “Excellence is an art won by training andhabituation. We do not act rightly because we have virtueor excellence, but we rather have those because we haveacted rightly. We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit.”Thank you for your part in our past, present, and future.Thank you for engaging in the “habit” that is excellenceat ULS.16 17

“As members of the faculty, we are often asked to give of ourselves – our time andour talents to forward the success of our students and the school community at large. However, we also benefited from the sacrifices we made. We have a stake in the futuresuccess of the school because we were a part of the shaping of its past. Many of usenjoy rewards that extend beyond our positive affect on our students, the camaraderieand lifelong friendships we developed, and the personal growth we underwent. We also partake in the success of ULS alumni, parents of alumni, and parents of futurealumni. For these reasons, our participation in the Fund for Excellence, like arrivingearly and staying late to help a student in need, is extremely important.”– Ann LampeULS Faculty Emerita (1962-1992)36 37

When the Stars Come OutThe Office of Development and Alumni Relations extends its sincere appreciationto everyone who helped make our May events a success. The “When the StarsCome Out” silent auction and strolling dinner showcased our school, honored ourchildren’s art skills, represented the generosity of ULS families and friends throughwonderful auction items, featured delicious food and hosted an exciting raffle.Between the two raffles and the auction, we raised $175,000 in gross proceeds fortechnology for all students and faculty to enjoy in the year ahead.46 47

When the Stars Come OutThis event and these dollars would not have been realized without thecooperation, support, energy, time and talent of many people. Our facultyand staff were generous and helpful, our maintenance team added severalhours to their full schedules, and our parents, especially, gave so much ofthemselves to make this event such a successful and beautiful one.We are most grateful!Committee MembersEvent ChairsLouana Ghafari • Ginny SimonCommittee ChairsSusan Azar, Marketing and Public Relations • Lisa Peracchio, Auction Coordinator • Pam Voss, DecorationsConnie AheeChristine AlcantaraDebbie Borrego-SpoutzVicki DiazPam FaberBetsy FoxGinny HartiganPage HeenanTrudy HungCindy JonesMary Jane LaLondeDeAnn LukasLora MazzaLindsay MorounKatie NinivaggiPeggy O’ConnorLynn ParkNicole PolizziCarrie ProvenzanoSue ReddingCatherine RoggCatherine SaurbierCorey ScillianCatherine ShellSusan SidhuPatti TimminsKelley VreekenCathy WalkerBernadine WuKaren BabcockLisa BonoKathy CampbellAndrea ChampagneConnie deRuiterMichelle EdmondsTom EnglandColleen GatzkeHeidi GeorgeChris GiorgioCharlotte GoodeJoshua HuebnerMaria JeromeVolunteersCarol KisselWalt LevickPhil MacKethanAnca MitchellMaureen MooreChris PerkinsJennifer PerryRita PetersonJessica RudoniKelli SmithSue ValloneMichael Zarobe48 49

As you read this, members of the Class of 2008 are well into the next chapter of theireducational lives. They were the first class I had a chance to work with as Director ofCollege Guidance and I am pleased to have begun my tenure with such a smart, warm andconvivial class of students. While the successes of the Class of 2008 were (and no doubtwill continue to be) many, I was most impressed by their willingness to look at a widerange of schools during the college search. I am thrilled that ULS will send graduates toat least a few schools that have not enrolled a ULS alumnus in some time, including WakeForest, Gettysburg, Hamilton, Skidmore, and Barnard. One of the joys of my job is that I truly get to know the students I counsel. By the timeI begin to “talk college” with a student, I have come to know them as student, athlete, and artist. This makes my job both easier and more enjoyable. To the Class of 2008, thank you for a wonderful first year.– Elizabeth JamettDirector of College Counseling96 97
