46MESSAGE OF PEACEBaba Nanak—Believed by the Sikhs to be the founder <strong>of</strong> theirreligion, Baba Nanak (1469-1539) was actually a <strong>Muslim</strong>. He performedHajj, married into a <strong>Muslim</strong> family, and lived a pious life.Ganges—A river in the northern part <strong>of</strong> India revered by Hindusand believed to facilitate salvation for those who bathe in it.Hadrat—A term <strong>of</strong> respect used for a person <strong>of</strong> established righteousnessand piety.Hajj—Pilgrimage to the House <strong>of</strong> Allah in Mecca, Arabia; alsoknown as the fifth pillar <strong>of</strong> Islam.Holy Prophet sa —A term used exclusively for HadratMuhammad sa , the Prophet <strong>of</strong> Islam.Holy Qur’an—The Book sent by Allah for the guidance <strong>of</strong>mankind. It was revealed to the Holy Prophet Muhammad sa over aperiod <strong>of</strong> twenty-three years.Jainism—A religion and philosophy originating in India around500 BC by Prince Vardhamana (known by his followers asMahavira) who was born into a Hindu family but later tookexception to some <strong>of</strong> the common teachings <strong>of</strong> the Hindu religion,including the caste system.Jama‘at—Jama‘at means community. Although the word Jama‘atitself may refer to any community, in this book, Jama‘at specificallyrefers to the <strong>Ahmadiyya</strong>h <strong>Muslim</strong> Jama‘at.Jihad—The literal translation <strong>of</strong> this word is ‘striving’. The term isused to mean self-purification as well as religious wars in someinstances.Kalimah—The declaration <strong>of</strong> the Islamic faith: ‘There is noneworthy <strong>of</strong> worship except Allah; Muhammad sa is the Messenger <strong>of</strong>Allah.’ It is also known as the first pillar <strong>of</strong> Islam.Mahdi—See al-Imam al-Mahdi.
