EXETER COLLEGE DONORS’ REPORT | 09EXETER COLLEGE DONORS’ REPORT | 09From theRectorThere can rarely have been a tougher year for the Collegeto raise money. Yet, wonderfully, many donors continued oreven increased their gifts to the College. In particular, our income to the AnnualFund, our main vehicle for giving bythe vast majority of Old Members, raised more than in any previousyear. Such unrestricted generosityprovides the backbone of supportfor the tutorial system, for help withstudent hardship, for our careers andinternship office, for the library and fora host of small but important activitiesthat enhance College life. Many donors gave in response to ourannual telephone campaign, whichbrings all sorts of unexpected benefitsapart from the financial. It gives ourstudents a glimpse of the College’spast, and a sense of the career choicesthat may face an Exeter graduate. Butit also gives our Old Members a chanceto hear how College has changed sincetheir day – and how, at its heart, itremains unchanged. We have also enjoyed some generousindividual gifts. Some, such as a largegift from Sir Ronald Cohen (1964,PPE) towards the Ruskin development, arrived just after the end of thefinancial year; I will have more to sayabout them in our next report. But wealso received several welcome legacies, including one from Fred Bornhauser(1948, English), to be used to continuehis own devotion to American literaturehere at Exeter College. The responseto my own letter to my contemporariesand older alumni, urging them toremember the College in their wills, has been touchingly enthusiastic.Exeter’s Old Members and Friendsare very generous, with over 1,000making a modest gift each year.We are now fully embarked uponthe College’s Campaign for 2014,Exeter Excelling, in time for our 700thanniversary. We had a series of launchevents in September, culminating inan all-day event at College. We havealready had a warm response, evenbefore sending you word about thepurposes of the Campaign. It will be atthe heart of what the College doesin the next few years, as we aim toraise £45m – of which more than £11mhas already been received. To put thischallenging target into perspective –our endowment is currently valuedat £42m!Your philanthropy already makespossible many of the best aspects ofthis College: its academic excellence, its compassion for students sufferingfinancial problems, its wonderfulmusic and its sports facilities. Inthe past year, we have created anew Fellowship to teach Economics;we have refurbished the Collegeboathouse in memory of the twostudents who died in 2007; we havebeen able to afford to provide adisabled student with the specialmeals she requires; and we havemoved students into comfortable newrooms in our new graduate buildingat Exeter House; and providedscholarships for some of the bestgraduate students in the world. Unlikeat the richer Colleges who can affordit, all of this has happened because ofthe generosity of our Old Members, parents and friends.Thank you for making so muchpossible. The whole College is gratefulfor your continuing support.FRANCES CAIRNCROSSRECTOR23

EXETER COLLEGE DONORS’ REPORT | 09EXETER COLLEGE DONORS’ REPORT | 09College FinancesWilliam JensenIncome Statement2008-09As evidence of stress in the banking sectormultiplied in the latter part of 2007 and into2008, Exeter began raising cash from globalequity funds. When Lehman Brothers failedin October 2008, the College endowment washolding nearly 30% of its assets in cash andthis sheltered it from much of the turbulencewhich followed. Agricultural land, accountingfor some 14% of the endowment, held itsvalue, and the College had limited exposureto hedge funds and private equity. So it wasthat the College recorded a total return inthe year to 31 July 2009 of -3.33% and thisrelative stability has enabled the College tomaintain its operations whilst many muchwealthier institutions which experiencedgreater volatility were forced to retrench. The College was greatly helped in achievingthis outcome by the contribution of the fourexternal members of its Investment& Accounts Committee (three of them areOld Members) and by its investment adviser,Sand Aire, a family office founded and run byanother Old Member. New investments havebeen purchased cautiously and selectivelybut a substantial cash balance remains andwe are prepared for further turbulence whenliquidity is withdrawn by central banks.4Endowments have very longinvestment horizons and the receivedwisdom has been that they shouldbe able to ride out market volatility.Extreme stress in the financialsystem has exposed limitations tothe efficacy of diversification. The value of the portfolio at 31 July 2009was £42.5 million; this was after the transferof £1.5 million to the College’s revenueaccount and an exceptional grant of £683,000to the Michael Cohen Trust which supportsthe tutorial work of the College. The tableopposite summarises income and expenditurein the year. Exceptional efforts were made togrow commercial banqueting and conferencebusiness, whilst at the same time placinggreat emphasis on cost control; this resultedin an unexpected, though very welcome, surplus of £457,000. Apart from the majordevelopment of graduate accommodation atExeter House, the College did not undertakeany significant capital projects.Looking forward, there is concern over thesustainability of public funding for highereducation and Oxford expects an additionalblow from the withdrawal of the £5 million‘historic buildings’ grant from HEFCEfunding. Many students are finding thattheir families are not able to support theirstudies to the extent that was anticipatedand several funding bodies are now payinggrants termly rather than at the beginningof the academic year. The College has responded by makinghardship funding and bursaries a priorityin its allocation of resources. We are verygrateful for the support of our Old Membersand Friends, which has enabled Exeterto offer a guaranteed level of support tostudents facing financial hardship.WILLIAM JENSENFINANCE AND ESTATES BURSARINCOME (£,000)Academic Tuition Fees 2,105Accommodation and Catering 1,441Conferences and Functions 931Income from Endowment Return 1,532Donations (including Annual Fund but excluding capital and endowment gifts) 713Income from College Assets 690TOTAL INCOME 7,412EXPENDITURETuition and ResearchDirect Tuition Costs 1,753Library and Archives 97IT 158Maintenance of College Buildings 593Utilities 388Security costs 2053,194Student Support 636Accommodation and Catering (Including Conferences) 2,064College Administration 713Development Office 348TOTAL EXPENDITURE 6,955SURPLUS FOR THE YEAR 457Profit on Disposal of Property Assets 1,569ACTUAL SURPLUS FOR THE YEAR 2,0265

EXETER COLLEGE DONORS’ REPORT | 09EXETER COLLEGE DONORS’ REPORT | 09PERCENTAGE PARTICIPATION RATEINCOME (£000’s)The Exeter CollegeAnnual FundIn the last financial year, the Annual Fundraised £382,465 in unrestricted income, its most successful year by far. 1,327individuals made a gift to the College,an increase of over 100 compared tothe previous year. The percentage ofOld Members giving was 20%. Exetercontinues to punch above its weightwhen it comes to fundraising. In the mostrecent Oxford Benchmarking (2007/8),Exeter came second only to UniversityCollege in the proportion of its OldMembers who made a gift.PERCENTAGE GIVING RATE ACROSSOXFORD COLLEGES 08|0930%25%20%15%10%5%ANNUAL FUND INCOME 08|094003503002502001501005062001COLLEGES200220032004MEAN ■ EXETER ■ UNIV ■200520062007200808|092009NUMBER OF DONORSThe total raised of £382,465 is a result ofthis support and proof that small donations– the average gift was £250 per annum–do add up to a substantial amount, andcan make a real difference. It is veryencouraging that not only does Exeterreceive donations from more Old Membersand Friends each year, but that the averageannual gift that each of our donors makesis also increasing each year. In addition toAnnual Fund donations, we also receivedsignificant numbers of Endowment andCapital gifts (excluded from the IncomeStatement on page 5), as shown by theIncome by Stream graph below.INCOME BY STREAM■ REVENUEANNUAL FUND (11%)■ REVENUE (10%)■ ENDOWMENT (42%)■ CAPITAL (39%)■ UNRESTRICTED (1%)ANNUAL DONATION LEVELS140012001000800600400200£1K+04|05£500-1K05|06£250-50006|07£100-25007|0808|09£0-100The 1314 SocietyThe 1314 Society was introduced in2007 to recognise the support of ourmost generous Annual Fund donorswho give more than £1,314 (gross) ina financial year. The 1314 Society hasencouraged a number of existingdonors to increase the level of theirgiving as well as recruiting new donors, especially young alumni and recentgraduates. This year the Societyboasts 127 members, more thandouble last year’s membership.“To this day I consider myselfvery privileged to have studied at Oxford asa member of Exeter College. The richnessof the experience, sense of purpose andbelonging instilled by College life continueto have long-lasting effects. The very least I could do was to reciprocatewith a donation to benefit the newgenerations of students and what better wayto do so than in a “memorable” sum, that ofthe date of foundation of the College!”DAVID J V DUMAS QC(1977, JURISPRUDENCE)INCOME (£000’s)Telethon 2009Many Old Members and Parents madea donation in response to a phonecall from a current student duringthe course of the eighth telephonecampaign in January 2009. Despitethe current economic difficulties,55% of the 701 who spoke to a studentin January decided to make a gift, raising a total of £131,889. EXETER COLLEGE DONORS’ REPORT | 09EXETER COLLEGE DONORS’ REPORT | 09Leavers’ GiftOnce again this year, a large numberof students in their final year decidedto make a gift to the Annual Fund, with encouragement from EmilyBall (2005, Engineering). Emily sentemails, put up posters and asked hercontemporaries at the Annual Leavers’Dinner to make a modest contributionto the Annual Fund.56%of the departing undergraduates(and some graduates and Williamsstudents) donated a total of £559.This year’s Leavers’ participation ratewas the highest ever achieved, and only 3other Old Member year groups reachedsuch a participation rate this year.We are very grateful to the two OldMembers who have again supported theshow of commitment by these students,by matching, pound for pound, what thestudents raised. This pledge of matchedsupport was a great incentive to thestudents to give what they could. This achievement by a group ofstudents, most of whom did not evenhave a job at the time, is a clearindication that current studentsunderstand the importance of givingback to Exeter, even if they cannotafford more than £5. These are thenext generation of philanthropists whowill continue to lead by example. We hope that this tradition continuesfor many years yet, and that all our OldMembers will join current studentsin making a gift – however modest –and, in so doing, help to increase notonly the value of the Annual Fund butalso the participation rate for eachmatriculation year group. Why Give?Government grants and tuition feesbarely meet half the true costs of anExeter student’s education, due tothe intensive and thus expensive formof teaching that is the tutorial. To make up the shortfall, Exeter mustheavily subsidise the costs of teachingand non-academic provision for eachundergraduate from its endowmentand by raising additional income, primarily by hosting conferences inthe summer vacation. In the current uncertain financialclimate, the need for support ofour students is even greater, as therecession hits students and theirfamilies, reducing their ability tofund their study at Exeter. Reducedendowment returns due to difficultmarket conditions mean that regularincome through the Annual Fund iseven more vital to ensuring that theCollege can fulfil its commitment toworld class education.Over the coming years we hope toincrease the Old Member participationrate to 30% and to raise £500,000 forthe Annual Fund each year. Every giftmade to the College in the periodleading up to 2014, including to theAnnual Fund, will be counted towardsthe Exeter Excelling Campaign.Ensuring AcademicExcellenceExeter is committed to the belief thatthe personal and unique experience ofthe tutorial, given by leading academicswho are actively engaged in research,is the finest form of teaching thatcan be offered to undergraduates.“The Oxford tutorial system is,in my opinion, the most important thing toset Oxford apart from most other universities. An hour in a tutorial is worth 10 hours inlectures or classes. For me, the tutorial wasthe single most important part of myOxford education.”DAVE HANDLEY (1991, ENGINEERING)8 9

EXETER COLLEGE DONORS’ REPORT | 09EXETER COLLEGE DONORS’ REPORT | 09EliminatingStudent Hardship“I had such a great time atCollege and a lot of this has been madepossible by the financial support given to meby Exeter. I’m very grateful for the generosityof Old Members that means the College isable to offer such support to students in need.”MARTIN GROSVENOR (2006, ENGLISH)Exeter is very proud of the guaranteedlevel of support that it can offer tostudents facing financial hardshipas a direct result of the generosity ofOld Members. The provision of suchsupport helps the College to attract thebest students from around the world, enabling them to make the most oftheir time in Oxford by allowing themto concentrate on their studies, free ofexcessive financial worries.Enhancingthe CollegiateExperienceExeter is committed to supporting thepersonal development of its students, both undergraduate and graduate, byoffering a wide range of opportunitiesand facilities to all, regardless offinancial means. The Annual Fundprovides a regular stream of income tofund travel scholarships, book grantsand support for sports (includingrowing), drama and other activities.“Being involved in sport atExeter has enriched my experience of Collegelife enormously. It’s a great way to feel involvedin College life and make friends within theMCR and JCR alike. Graduate study can bea solitary experience; indeed, overwhelming attimes. Sport helps to keep things in perspective;mutual woes can be shared and the burdenlessened over a good game of squash! ”DisbursementDonations to the Annual Fund areunrestricted although donors are invitedto express a preference for how theirgift is used. These preferences includetutorial support, student support(scholarships, hardships bursariesand travel grants), college facilities(including the library and chapel),student clubs and societies (includingsport), and student career development. The preferences expressed by donorsare reflected in how the gifts aredisbursed each year. What is especiallyencouraging is that the majority ofdonors to the Annual Fund (82% in2008/9) chose to direct their gift to‘wherever the need is greatest’ or didnot express a preference at all.ANNUAL FUND DONATIONSWITH PREFERENCE EXPRESSED 08|09(EXCLUDING 82% OF DONATIONS WHERENO PREFERENCE EXPRESSED)■ TUTORIAL SUPPORT■ STUDENT SUPPORT■ COLLEGE FACILITIESDISBURSEMENTS OF THEANNUAL FUND 08|09■ STUDENT CLUBSAND SOCIETIES■ STUDENT CAREERDEVELOPMENTSARAH LIVERMORE(2008, PHYSICS)■ TUTORIAL SUPPORT■ STUDENT SUPPORT■ COLLEGE FACILITIES■ STUDENT CLUBSAND SOCIETIES■ STUDENT CAREERDEVELOPMENT1011

EXETER COLLEGE DONORS’ REPORT | 09EXETER COLLEGE DONORS’ REPORT | 09Major GiftsDespite the challenging economic climate, Old Members,Parents and Friends have continued to give generously tothe College this year.Demonstrating the continuingcommitment of Exeter’s benefactorsto alleviating student hardship,William Jackson (1983, Geography),Tim Vanderver (1965, Jurisprudence)and others have continued theirdedication to generous hardshipbursaries; and Richard Mahoney,a long-term friend of the College, hasbeen one of several donors who havecontributed to create an impressivearray of graduate scholarships, bringing top students to Exeter.14The College also received welcomebenefactions to enhance the academicframework of the College. Thecontinuing generosity of Old Membersmeans that the History and EconomicsFellowships have now been securedfor the College in perpetuity. Anothernotable gift came from Brian Singer(a Friend of Exeter and member of theCollege’s Investment Committee) tofund a series of economics seminars.John Quelch (1969, Modern History)and John Hughes (1950, PPP) both gavegenerously to support the work of theCollege Library this year, andDavid Hartnett (1971, English)continued his gift from the HartnettTrust in support of the LibraryShelving Project.A sculpture by Antony Gormley, titled“Another Time”, now stands on the roofof Exeter’s Thomas Wood Building, overlooking the junction of Broad Streetand Turl Street.
