Our facility is now smoke-free. Do westill need to have a policy?AYes. Standard F-03 Use of Tobacco requires that smokingis prohibited in all inside areas, and if the facilityallows smoking outside, specific areas are designated.In addition, the standard requires that, at a minimum, theprevention and abatement program includes nicotinereplacement products and written materials on preventionand abatement of tobacco use. The written materialsshould be available in areas accessible to all inmates (suchas the clinic, library and housing). If the sergeantis a Certified Correctional Health Professional (CCHP)or has other relevant educational credentials, then by virtueof his or her education, experience or certification this positionwould be appropriate.Pharmacy InspectionsQSince we do not have a staff pharmacist, standardD-01 Pharmaceutical Operations says that a consultingpharmacist should be used for documentedinspections and consultation on a regular basis, not less thanquarterly. Does a pharmacist have to be the one to physicallyconduct the inspections, or can a pharmacy tech dothe inspection as long as it is reviewed and signed off by apharmacist?ANo. The intention of this standard is that a consultingpharmacist actually conducts the inspections. A situationwhere another type of staff member conductsthe inspection and then has a pharmacist sign off wouldnot be in compliance with the standard.Jennifer E.
