Welcome!
It is with great joy that we welcome
you (or welcome you back) to our
79th summer at New England Music
Camp, and second year as Snow Pond
Center for the Arts on the shores of
beautiful Lake Messalonskee. The mission
for both of these programs is the
same: to provide a balanced and challenging
program of music education,
enhanced by excellent recreational
and social activities, to all deserving
young students. As we welcome over
300 young musicians from all over the world for our NEMC summer program, we also celebrate the 120
local children and adults who have shared the inaugural year of the Snow Pond Community Music School.
We have certainly started to “transform our community through arts education”, as so articulately put by
Douglas Lowry, the late Dean at Eastman College of Music.
As we continue to move forward with our goal of making music and the arts matter throughout central
Maine, our programs are expanding and reaching an increasing number of students and their families. Our
outreach efforts brought music to the students at Goodwill-Hinckley every week, where they have the opportunity
to take both group and private lessons in cello, flute, guitar and piano. Dozens of children enjoy
weekly music classes at the Alfond Youth Center in Waterville, the Augusta after school programs, and
Educare in Waterville. Every week at Snow Pond and in these community music programs, there are private
lessons, group classes, recitals, and other performance opportunities for 270 aspiring artists of all ages. It has
been a tremendously exciting year!
Our summer program at New England Music Camp has been designed to provide performances across
all genres of music and theater. In addition to our weekly free faculty and student recitals and weekend
concerts, there are four ticketed events that we are anticipating will be wonderful opportunities for everyone
to experience a world-class performance. Our first Bowl concert of the season, on June 28th, will bring
the Bangor Symphony to our site, where they will share the stage with NEMC alum, violist Evan Wilson,
formerly of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. As part of our Independence Day celebrations, we welcome five
outstanding Broadway performers to the Bowl stage on Sunday evening, July 5th, for Broadway Under the
Stars. Our annual Pops Concert will take place on July 18th at the Messalonskee Performing Arts Center
in Oakland, where our very own campers have the chance to share their special talents in this outstanding
setting. We will then welcome the Air Force Strings to the Bowl on Friday, July 31st, preceeded by a family
barbecue in our grove. Our season will end with two performances of Stephen Sondheim’s Into the Woods
performed by the musical theater students of the NEMC program. Details about all of these programs, as
well as how to purchase tickets, can be found on our website, www.snowpond.org.
Our greatest joy at New England Music Camp and Snow Pond Center for the Arts is having the opportunity
to share the special talents of so many artists with our community. We hope you are able to join us
for many of these performances throughout the summer, here on the shores of Snow Pond. We have often
talked about a magic that happens here when music is reaching the hearts of so many, and we want to share
it with all of you. Please visit often, and take the time to introduce yourself to us. We are thrilled to welcome
you to this special place!
Learning an Instrument
Aids in Brain Development
Mia Chung
As a 7-year-old pianist, I experienced
the joy of learning Beethoven’s
“Für Elise.” My eyes deciphered the
notes on the page, my ears guided
me to depress the right keys, and my
fingers translated the symbols on the
page with the right speed, rhythm
and expression. The benefit in my
mind was the pleasure of making
music. What I didn’t know was that
I was wiring my brain for classroom
learning.
Yet in the years since music fed
my young mind and laid the groundwork
for further intellectual growth,
the country has steadily moved away
from music instruction. Too many
schoolchildren are learning without
this effective discipline. Instead, the
noisy national debates bounce from
one “fix” to the next, whether No
Child Left Behind or Common Core.
Left on the cutting-room floor are
music lessons — yes, music — that
new research shows is essential for
brain development.
Playing a musical instrument develops
an important neurocognitive
skill known as executive function.
Strong EF is critical for the brain to
operate in school and in life. Focusing
on a topic, memorizing information,
inhibition, cognitive flexibility
and paying attention to multiple
ideas simultaneously are examples of
it. It is at the heart of all learning.
Acquiring these skills starts in
early childhood and is crucial for
healthy brain development through
early adulthood. In fact, recent studies
from the Laboratories of Cognitive
Neuroscience at Boston Children’s
Hospital indicate that EF is a
strong predictor of academic achievement,
even more than IQ.
The solution to weak academic
performance isn’t simply standardized
testing or tutoring during the
elementary years and beyond. It is
music performance starting in early
childhood, which promotes EF skills.
A study from the Boston Children’s
Hospital this past summer demonstrated
through MRI brain imaging
that musical training promotes
the development and maintenance
of these abilities. Lead investigator
Nadine Gaab says the brains of musically
trained children display more
activation and “more mature executive
function networks.” This finding
supports the widely held perception
that music performance and academic
achievement go hand in hand.
Living evidence of music’s power
to turn the most underserved on to
learning exists in the U.S. chapters
of El Sistema, which is an intensive
after-school music training program
for the neediest children. Philadelphia,
Los Angeles, Baltimore, New
York City, and dozens of other cities
have programs that have produced
strong outcomes among students.
Stanford Thompson, executive
director of “Play on Philly,” the local
El Sistema program, boasts that its
students outperform peers who select
academic tutoring and other afterschool
programs, as measured by an
independent educational assessment
firm. In other major cities, similar
stories of improved academic performance
are emerging.
Unfortunately, these privately
funded programs are all after-school
initiatives that benefit a small percentage
of children. Music performance
happens outside of the school
day because districts have not understood
the positive impact it can have
on academic performance.
We must change preschool and
elementary education to include
music performance as a core subject.
Studies show that early intervention
is critical to avoid widening academic
gaps further down the road. Imagine
including music training as a central
part of the Head Start program,
which serves nearly one million
children annually. Preschoolers could
learn how to read music and play an
instrument. Music training in an ensemble
could be an important part of
the elementary curriculum. Students
would perform better on standardized
tests as they learn to process
information, focus, switch mental
gears and regulate thought patterns
more effectively.
Resistance to change and complacency
have shortchanged our children,
particularly the underserved.
Here is the truth: Playing an instrument
wires the brain for learning. By
teaching students to play music, we
can increase their success in other
disciplines.
It is time that we pay attention
to the evidence before us and rethink
education. No child should be without
music. My “Für Elise” moment is
available to all.
The Maine Film
Center
Greetings to Snow
Pond audiences from the
Maine Film Center, whose
mission is to enrich,
educate and entertain the community through film
and art. From the daily screenings of first run films at
Railroad Square Cinema to the Maine International
Film Festival’s annual feast of films in July, we offer
film programming that often can’t be found anywhere
else in Maine. With this unique programming, we
attract audiences from all over the state and beyond
to Central Maine, contributing to the Waterville area’s
reputation as a hub for arts and cultural activity and
also generating significant economic impact. According
to a study conducted by the Maine Arts Commission,
the film festival alone generates over $750,000 in
economic activity each summer.
It is important to note that the Maine Film Center
does not operate in a bubble. We frequently partner
with other arts and cultural institutions , such as the
Waterville Opera House, the Colby Museum of Art,
and the Waterville Public Library, to develop collaborative
programs and to ensure that this area offers a
rich canvas of arts opportunities throughout the year.
Ultimately, it is our goal to encourage an atmosphere
of creativity and exploration that crosses institutions
and media and enriches the lives of our local residents
and visitors alike. The Maine Film Center is proud to
be an anchor institution in the newly established Waterville
Creates!, an organization that will build upon
this spirit of collaboration to enhance and expand arts
and culture as social and economic catalysts in our
region.
In the past year, the Maine Film Center has begun
in earnest to cultivate the education piece of our mission,
which we see as a crucial next step in engaging
youth in independent film programming and building
future audiences for arts programming in general.
These efforts have and will continue to include educational
opportunities in both film appreciation and
filmmaking. In addition to providing film-specific education,
these programs will help to promote literacy,
social skills, intergenerational collaborations, cultural
exchange, and an initiation to the creative process and
art appreciation. We see these developments as vital
not only to increased audiences for arts programming
but to a more engaged, healthier and happier community
as a whole.
We at the Maine Film Center are delighted to see
the development of Snow Pond Center for the Arts
into a vibrant year-round resource for the arts and
education and look forward to a rich partnership in
the years to come.
New England Music Camp
Since 1937, New England
Music Camp has provided a
world-class music education
to aspiring young artists from around the globe. As
Snow Pond Center for the Arts continues to expand
its programs, NEMC maintains the same foundation
it has for the last 78 seasons. While the program is
always being groomed and fine-tuned, the philosophy
of the camp has remained the same; to provide an institution
dedicated to the cultivation and refinement
of musical skills in young people, while supporting
and developing their physical, emotional, and social
well-being. NEMC has, and always will, provide a
balanced program of music and recreation.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
. As NEMC continues to thrive, the demand for
certain programming has been expanded. Over the
last few years three areas in particular have grown to
fit the needs of the campers: Jazz, Chamber Music,
and Musical Theater.
The study of Jazz has always been an integral part
of the NEMC programming. However, as curricular
demand and popularity has grown, additional class
offerings have expanded. NEMC now boasts two Jazz
Ensembles, Jazz Combos, as well as several historical
classes with jazz focused syllabus. Also added this
summer is the Bill and Dorothy Schmearer Scholarship
for Jazz Studies, which is a single session, full
tuition scholarship, awarded to one camper each
summer, with a proclivity in jazz.
It is well documented that study in small group
settings, enhances a child’s ability to be musically independent.
The Chamber Music program at NEMC has
also developed in the recent years. Chamber offerings
now extend to all instrumental majors and studios.
Campers have the opportunity to participate in different
groups like String Quartets, Wind Ensembles,
Quintets, and Collaborative Piano. Area coordinators
assign students into several groups, with each ensemble
coached directly by one of NEMC’s Faculty Artists.
Last season, NEMC also reintroduced Musical
Theater into the camp programming. In the 70’s,
80’s and 90’s, musicals were a part of every summer.
NEMC brought theater back with a bang with their
production of The 25th Annual Putnum County Spelling
Bee, which had a sold out run at Alumni Hall in
2014. This new major studies in a workshop setting,
with the main focus on the fundamentals of musical
theater performance: acting, singing, and dancing.
This summer’s performance will be Stephen Sondheim’s
Into The Woods with performances on August
7th and 8th at 7:30pm in Alumni Hall.
Part of NEMC’s mission is that any child, regardless
of financial means, should have the opportunity
to attend camp. Building on that mission, NEMC
has added three additional Merit Scholarships to an
already generous Financial Aid and Scholarship Program.
The Bill and Dorothy Schmearer Scholarship,
as referred to above, the Gregorian Scholarship for
Violin or Viola, and The Damon Holton Scholarship
for Guitar. Now, with these three new merit scholarships,
as well as the existing Green Scholarship and
the financial aid program, NEMC will be able to
continue educating talented, young musicians from
across the world.
Friends of Messalonskee
Friends of Messalonskee is a
nonprofit volunteer organization
dedicated to the preservation of
Messalonskee Lake/Snow Pond.
We have promoted responsible use
of the lake since our incorporation
in 1990 as the Messalonskee Lake
Association. Over the past 25
years, the challenges to the lake
have grown. Extensive development
along its shores and throughout
the Belgrade Lakes Watershed
has increased sources of harmful
runoff, and threats from invasive
plant species have multiplied. Our
lake is not only a great natural
and recreational resource but also
an economic engine for the local
communities. It is important to
protect this valuable resource for
residents and visitors alike, now
and into the future.
Today, Friends of Messalonskee
is actively involved in controlling
the spread of invasive variable
leaf milfoil in the lake as well as
protecting other lakes through
Courtesy Boat Inspections. It is
also part of a broader initiative
to improve the water quality
throughout the Belgrade Lakes
watershed by participating in
the Lake Trust. The membership
has grown from the handful of
individuals who first got together in
the early 1930s to 350 members and
over 1,000 Facebook friends today.
Snow Pond Center for the
Arts is an active member of this
engaged group of neighbors. We
all recognize that preserving the
quality of the Belgrade Lakes is
essential to the vibrant central
Maine communities in which we
live, learn, work and play.
Whether you enjoy working
Snow Pond Music Festival
June 7 -21, 2015
This summer marks the fourth year that the Snow
Pond Music Festival has attracted high-level college and
post-graduate musicians to the shores of Messalonskee
Lake. The highest caliber performers and educators
were again invited to join the SPMF faculty to present
specialized music programs with the sole purpose of
inspiring and challenging the next generation of classical
musicians. In addition to our established programs,
the Maine Chamber Music Seminar and the Frederick
L. Hemke Saxophone Institute, SPMF initiated two new
programs this year: Snow Pond Composers Workshop
and New England Group Piano Teaching Institute.
Led by Drs. Richard Nelson and Ed Jacobs, guest
composer Elliott Schwartz, and flutist Peter Bloom,
Snow Pond Composers Workshop’s mission is to guide
young composers interested in traditional composition
as well as those whose work incorporates electronics,
improvisation, jazz, rock, and other diverse elements.
The inaugural session of the Snow Pond Composers
Workshop was a week of intensive input and experiences
for creative compositional growth. The session
concluded with live performances of works created by
the participants.
Presenting effective, hands-on strategies for group
piano teaching with a single acoustic instrument or a
piano lab is the goal of the New England Group Piano
Teaching Institute. Professor Tony Caramia of Eastman-
School of Muisc and Dr. Jackie Edwards Henry of Mississippi
State University created a curriculum that offers
current and effective pedagogical insights to teaching
group piano in the 21st Century. NEGPTI was a huge
success and we look forward to expanding and welcoming
participants for years to come.
World-renowned saxophonist and pedagogue, Dr.
Frederick L. Hemke, brings 50 years of passion and
commitment to showcasing the saxophone as a beautiful
What Would This Look Like ?
The broad question that seems
to be on everyone’s mind is: How
do we create more economic prosperity
here in Maine? More specifically,
what would a better Sidney,
Belgrade Lakes, or Central Maine
look like? What are the things we as
a community need to do to attract
and retain our younger families, to
create more jobs, to make Central
Maine a very attractive place to live
and work? There is certainly lots
of activity and discussion on this
topic with our political and business
leaders and no shortage of
opinions. As we develop our path
for Snow Pond Center for the Arts
it is important for us to be mindful
of these collective efforts and more
importantly for us to do our part
in shaping a positive future for our
students and residents alike.
As an actuary by training, I am
most interested in data and trends
of other places that have populations
similar to Central Maine.
What we consistently see is that a
common ingredient of all vibrant
communities is first and foremost,
great schools and usually diverse
cultural opportunities as well.
What is also particularly interesting
is that the data is very clear and
consistent; students with music
training do better in school, in civic
engagement, and in leadership.
Music cultivates all of the traits we
most value in our citizens - creativity,
collaboration, critical thinking,
empathy, leadership, social skills,
and more. The differences are
especially profound for children of
lower income families.
With this in mind, we have
started very detailed discussions
and partnerships with the area
schools in the broadest sense which
include all of the local colleges, the
public schools (starting with RSU
18), and with the after school programs.
The goal of all of our programs
(both existing and planned)
is the same: to enrich and enhance
what is already in place and in the
end help create a school system and
community that is attractive to new
residents and new businesses. There
is also awareness of the scale needed
to make a notable difference.
The growing Community Music
School and the Outreach Programs
provided music to over 300 children.
We are currently exploring a
music based after school program
in partnership with RSU18 and the
Alfond Youth Center which would
provide music, academic support,
and recreation to each child every
day. Finally, we have a team developing
a plan for ‘Snow Pond Arts
Academy’, a high school charter
school. This includes looking at
the feasibility of being Maine’s first
school district authorized charter
school (with RSU18 and possibly
others).
The pages that follow provide
more details on our future plans
and programs. We welcome your
input on any aspect of our programming
or community building.
If we want to build a better
Central Maine - starting with great
schools – what would this look
like??? Please email your thoughts
Snow Pond Community Music School
Igniting a lifelong love of music
Over the past year, Snow Pond
Center for the Arts has truly come
to life as a year-round education
center. The picturesque lakeside
grounds buzzed all winter long
with the energy of young students
acquiring new skills and adult students
revisiting techniques of their
youth. This energy comes from
Snow Pond Community Music
School, where local teaching artists
and families have gathered to enrich
their lives with the study of music.
Snow Pond Community Music
School engaged 120 students of all
ages in individual lessons, group
classes, ensembles and workshops
in this first year. The faculty and
students of Pineland Suzuki School,
under the direction of Betsy Kobayashi,
came to SPCMS last September,
bringing with them the
nurturing energy and exciting pro-
16
gramming of the
Suzuki Method.
The SPCMS
faculty is a diverse
and talented group
of teaching artists
whose expertise
spans many genres, from classical
strings to rock guitar to Caribbean
steel drums. The SPCMS student
body comprises students from many
central Maine towns, from Bangor
to Damariscotta. And in true
community music school fashion,
a wonderful cross-pollination of
methods and talents has occurred.
Suzuki students perform in ensembles
together with more traditional
students, piano students are learning
accompaniment skills, students
experience other instruments in
rehearsal, and performance season
brings about a host of ways for stu-
dents to perform together.
The reasons for studying and
performing music are vast, beginning
with the fundamental way
music feeds our souls. Then there’s
the emotional engagement, the
intellectual stimulation, the self-expression,
and the sheer joy of making
beautiful sounds, not to mention
improved reading, verbal and
math skills, enhanced self-esteem,
increased sense of responsibility
and cooperation. All in all, music
makes us better people.
Snow Pond Community Music
School strives to offer music-making
opportunities to as many students
as possible. For this reason,
SPCMS has launched an Outreach
Program initiative, to help make
music education more accessible in
the wider community.
SPCMS Outreach
Programs
Even as the student body of
SPCMS grows, it is clear that there
are numerous community members
who desire to make music but
time and resources make it difficult.
Snow Pond Community Music
School is proud to partner with
neighboring schools and community
organizations to offer music
classes on site at partner locations.
150 students participated in outreach
programs in 2015, all free of
charge.

Band Camp for Adults!
New England Adult Music Camp in a noncompetitive,
safe environment, where “your best is
good enough!”
The Snow Pond center for the Arts offers a weeklong
music camp experience for those who play band
instruments -- you know the flute, clarinet, trumpet,
percussion, kind of band. This unique camp is a
chance to immerse yourself in music for a week by
making music, talking about music, learning about
music, making new friends, and enjoying a wonderful
camp experience with other adults.
You may ask, “I’m just coming back to my
instrument after a 55 year hiatus, will I be good
enough?” The answer is yes! Two distinct band
options provide the best opportunity for every level of
player, from the novice learner to the more advanced.
The goal is to learn and enjoy making music in a fun,
supportive and challenging atmosphere. We welcome
campers who are relatively new to their instrument
(what are those little black marks on the paper?) to
our NEMC alumni or Community Band members
who are well versed on their instruments. You will
also find that many of our campers also play in New
Horizons Bands in their hometown.
In August of 2014, the New England Adult Band
Camp hosted 120 campers who ranged in age from 30
somethings to 91. The camper s participated; in band
rehearsals, small ensembles, workshops and music
seminars. They played jazz, met new friends, learned
more about music and many rediscovered the joy of
playing an instrument. Music is one of those activities
in which anyone can take part, no matter what your
age or ability. Whatever level you are, you can play
music that you love and you can enjoy playing and
learning with others.
Aside from the sheer joy of making music,
playing an instrument has many benefits. If you play
a wind instrument, it improves your lung capacitygetting
more oxygen to your brain, heart and muscles.
Talk about giving your brain a work out! While you
are playing your synapses are firing away: where do
I put my fingers, how long do I hold the note, should
it be loud or soft or changing, am I in tune with
the person next to me, is my tone nice, is the note
accented, is this the correct rhythm, am I playing in
the right style, and so on. Talk about multi-tasking! In
fact, current research shows that playing music helps
the brain interconnect frequently used areas (Medical
News Today - How Music Benefits the Brain).
The Snow Pond Center for the Arts 2015 Adult
Camp will be held from August 23-29. Campers will
once again share the beauty of music and friendship
at our picturesque lakeside campus. To learn more
Snow Pond’s New England Adult Music Camp
has become the highlight of our year since we
attended the first week-long session in August,
2013, my husband as a non-student, me as an
intermediate clarinet player. We couldn’t have
been happier with everything about it – the
beautiful setting, the extraordinary facilities,
the caring attention and flexibility of the
camp’s staff, the excellent and dedicated faculty,
the programming, the sound of loons at night,
the food variety each day, the camaraderie and
support of our fellow campers. I still pinch
myself when I realize that finally now, at the
age of 66, I have the same opportunity and
experience young kids have been getting at this
special place for so many years. Thank you for
“I spent my first six weeks at NEMC last summer, and after the first day,
I already felt like I had been going there my whole life. I always feel weird
calling NEMC a summer camp, because for me it has been so much more
than that. I mean, what comes to mind when you think of summer camp?
Campfire songs, friendship bracelets, sports, and new friends tend to fit
the cliché of a summer camp description. Sure, NEMC has all of that, but
to call it a summer camp just does not do it justice. Imagine you could
spend an entire summer at a place where you could pursue your one most
powerful passion nonstop. NEMC is that place for me. And not only does
it give me the opportunity to develop my skills in music, but it allows me
to do it surrounded by some of the best people I have ever met. NEMC
is that place where people who spontaneously burst into song all alone
during the year can burst into song in six-part harmony with twelve
random other people during the summer. It is the place where teenagers
get out of bed at six in the morning without complaining because they
are too excited to start the day. It is the place where you can watch the
sunset over a lake while listening to someone practicing a cello concerto or
a horn solo. Even though I have as of yet only spent six weeks in total at
NEMC, it has already become my second home.”
Every contribution is important. Gifts to
Snow Pond and NEMC not only support
scholarships, facilities, and programs but
also cast a vote of confidence in what we
are doing to develop young lives and enrich
the cultural fabric of central Maine. We are
proud to recognize all our donors in 2014
and to highlight a few who were able to be
especially generous in the past year:
Dead River Company has pledged a gift of $100,000
through The Mimi Foundation to support the infrastructure
improvements that are so vital to the longterm
stability of New England Music Camp and
the growth of year-round programming through
the Snow Pond Center for the Arts. In recognition
of this commitment, the music library that will be
constructed in the Arts and Education Center will
be named “The Mimi Music Library” to honor Ruth
Hutchins (“Mimi” to her grandchildren). Her 1911
Steinway piano is now one of the primary teaching
instruments at Snow Pond.
“The family of Dead River Company is grateful
to have the opportunity to give back to the communities
in Maine who have given so much to us,” said
granddaughter Julie Bracken, president of the Foundation.
“We just love New England Music Camp
and are thrilled to have the good fortune to support
their growth by contributing to the Snow Pond
Center for the Arts. The expansion of the renowned
summer camp into a year-round facility will allow
New England Music Camp to enhance the lives of
students and audiences all year long. We would like
to thank all of you who do business with Dead River
Company. Each of you is part of this donation. We
hope others in the community will follow our lead
and join us in supporting this campaign. May the
show go on…”
New NEMC Scholarships
In addition to hosting the NEMC New York area
alumni’s smashing holiday party at his iconic club,
The Comedy Cellar, in Greenwich Village, Noam
Dworman has pledged $50,000 to create the Damon
Holton Scholarship for Classical Guitar. This fullseason,
full-tuition scholarship for a talented guitar
student honors the profound influence that Damon
Holton and the New England Music Camp has had
on Noam’s life - in musical performance, aesthetic
appreciation, and the building of character.
Noam joins the Gregorian Family and the
Schmearer Family in establishing new merit scholarships
Merit Scholarship for a new violin or viola student
and the Bill and Dorothy Schmearer Scholarship
for Jazz Studies for students of trumpet, trombone,
saxophone, piano, bass, or drum set.
Thanks to the Davis Family Foundation and the
Maine Department of Economic and Community
Development (DECD), we now have an opportunity
to implement significant improvements to our facilities
through two matching grants totaling $275,000.
These grants are dependent on NEMC matching
this generous donation by September 1, 2015. This
is a rare opportunity for us here at NEMC. Eligible
donors will see their gifts fully matched, giving their
donations 100% greater impact.
Barnraising - 2015
Definition: the collective action of a community
I was very fortunate to have all of
my grandparents alive for most of
my youth. It was my grandfather
Paul who started the New England
Music Camp in 1937. It was my other
grandfather, John Willard Hovey,
for whom I was named. John was
generally considered
a potato farmer, but I also remember
him as a carpenter, a mechanic, an
avid reader, and an inventor – which
is probably the case for most that have
a career called ‘farmer.’
John Willard lived most of his
94 years in the County, specifically
in Houlton. From what I recall
of my early youth, I spent quite a
bit more time on the farm than at
the music camp. In looking back,
I most remember the closeness
of that farming community. The
endless hours of planting and other
chores, and the closing of schools
during the harvest season. This was
a time when the entire community
had a single-minded focus on the
task at hand. Farmers are also the
most proud and self-reliant group
of individuals on this planet. I see
this great trait in abundance here in
Central Maine. There are probably
many among us that could easily
qualify for government aid or
support, but simply don’t ask. It is
not in the farmers’ nature to ask for
help. However, there are sizeable
projects that a farmer cannot do
alone. The building of a large barn
was a community project, as was the
building of churches and schools.
These large scale projects were
turned into an event and the whole
community would bond together to
make it happen. Barn-raisings are
a piece of our history and a fabric
that reflects the power of how a
community can come together to
create great things.
I suspect that I have a lot more
of John Willard’s genes than Paul’s...I
know for sure that this is true because
the “music gene” is for the most part,
absent in my DNA. If you visit our
campus, you will most often find me
with a shovel or rake and never an
instrument. Self-reliance is also in
our camp’s nature; we don’t usually
ask for help. This camp has survived
for 80 years without any organized
fund raising except for assistance in
creating scholarship and financial
aid funds. Part of our mission with
any program is that it must be
available for all deserving students,
regardless of their families economics.
That mission remains unchanged
today as we move into year round
programming. However, to offer year
round programming, on a scale that
will make a significant difference, we
now have to implement a barn-raising
type task; we cannot accomplish this
endeavor alone. We need your help
to build this year round school and
to establish a financial aid fund for
our Maine students that attend this
school.
What can you expect from our
schools? A nurturing, supportive, and
safe environment that encourages
each student to collaborate, create,
inspire and engage – to be confident
and reach for their full potential.
You can expect a place that bonds
our community together with
magnificent music and art available to
all. Please help in whatever way you
can – I know we can make a positive
difference for our children and our
families.
Thanks to all! . .
Art & Music Revitalize Augusta
The best Main streets across America
are built by establishing a sense of place;
offering the surrounding residents an
inviting destination to relax and enjoy
cultural events at the very heart of their
community. Creative Placemaking, a plan
developed by the National Endowment
for the Arts, offers support for cities who
wish to implement this very plan. The
Augusta Downtown Alliance, a collaboration
of government officials, property
and business owners, residents, artists
and other interested parties, is looking
to this method to create an arts-centric
downtown in Augusta. This committed
and passionate group of leaders hope
the positive changes taking place, along
with community engagement, will create
a momentum and turn downtown Augusta into a
regional destination.
The shift of big box retail service chains into suburban
areas across the country has left many cities,
like Augusta, with an in-town infrastructure largely
built for a 19th century world. There is a need for
major upgrades if Augusta’s downtown area wants to
compete in the modern marketplace. The revitalization
effort focuses on turning this quaint downtown
into a commercial and arts based district. One of the
many challenges with this initiative is determining
exactly what the broad vision for this 21st century
dynamic and vibrant downtown will look like.
. Augusta’s Waterfront Park provides ample green
space to watch for bald eagles and osprey fishing
for their meals above the Kennebec River. This
park hosts “Waterfront Wednesday;” a free evening
concert series which began on June 17th and runs
through July 29th. Beginning at 6:00 p.m., guests are
invited to bring lawn chairs, blankets and picnics
and enjoy the early evening air next to one of Maine’s
most beautiful rivers.
The Augusta Downtown Alliance is currently
raising money to commission a piece of public art
that honors Augusta’s past and celebrates its future.
Already in place are “Museum in the Streets” panels
placed along the waterfront and throughout the city
center.
Finally, the jewel in the crown, will be the re-
stored Augusta Colonial
Theater which
will serve as a performing
arts center.
The Alliance is working
with the Augusta
Colonial Theater, Inc.
to restore and revitalize
the 1913 silent
movie theater, which
later became a vaudeville
venue and a
“talkie” movie house.
The theater, listed on
the National Register
of Historic Places, has been dark since 1969 and is in
need of a significant, multi-year renovation. Although
it is still in its “rough” state, the Colonial will be hosting
an art installation by three Portland artists, called
“Home/Resilience” starting June 12th for one month.
The Augusta Downtown Alliance is excited about
an expanding partnership with the Snow Pond Center
for the Arts to bring music and arts education to
historic downtown Augusta. Keep your eye on downtown
Augusta…Amazing things are happening here!
El Sistema, a Model for Music Education
Snow Pond Center for the Arts is
committed to making music as accessible
as possible in our community and we are
looking at successful models from around
the world, such as El Sistema.
The transformative power of music is
sweeping the world through the inspiration
of Venezuela’s revolutionary El Sistema.
Founded in Venezuela in 1975 by
Dr. Jose Antonio Abreu, El Sistema is a
tested model of how a music program can
both create great musicians and dramatically
change the life trajectory of needy
children, deeply benefitting youth from
all backgrounds who participate. It now
teaches music to more than 500,000 of
Venezuela’s most vulnerable children, and hundreds
of thousands more young people around the globe.
El Sistema is not a replicable program or pedagogy,
but an inquiry into the most effective ways to achieve
youth development goals through intensive investment
in the positive social impact of the ensemble.
In 2009 Dr. Abreu was awarded the TED prize for
founding, growing and developing the National System
of Youth and Children’s Orchestras and Choirs in
Venezuela. Here are excerpts from his remarks upon
accepting the award:
Since I was a boy, in my early childhood, I always
wanted to be a musician, and, thank God, I made it.
From my teachers, my family and my community, I
had all the necessary support to become a musician. All
my life I’ve dreamed that all Venezuelan children have
the same opportunity that I had. From that desire and
from my heart stemmed the idea to make music a deep
and global reality for my country.
From the very first rehearsal, I saw the bright
future ahead. … I had received a donation of 50 music
stands to be used by 100 boys in that rehearsal. When
I arrived at the rehearsal, only 11 kids had shown up,
and I said to myself, “Do I close the program or multiply
these kids?” I decided to face the challenge, and on
that same night, I promised those 11 children I’d turn
our orchestra into one of the leading orchestras in the
world. Two months ago, I remembered that promise I
made, when a distinguished English critic published an
article in the London Times, asking who could be the
winner of the Orchestra World Cup. He mentioned four
great world orchestras, and the fifth one was Venezuela’s
Youth Symphony Orchestra. Today we can say that
art in Latin America is no longer a monopoly of elites
and that it has become a social right, a right for all the
people.
In its essence, the orchestra and the choir are much
more than artistic structures. They are examples and
schools of social life, because to sing and to play together
means to intimately coexist toward perfection and
excellence, following a strict discipline of organization
and coordination in order to seek the harmonic interdependence
of voices and instruments. That’s how they
build a spirit of solidarity and fraternity among them,
develop their self-esteem and foster the ethical and aesthetical
values related to the music in all its senses. This
is why music is immensely important in the awakening
of sensibility, in the forging of values and in the training
of youngsters to teach other kids.
Exploring Skowhegan: A Place to Watch
Skowhegan, Maine is a rural community nestled
in a bend of the Kennebec River, just a mere 30
minutes north of the Snow Pond Center for the
Arts. Skowhegan is a former mill town, which is in
the midst of a renaissance and is rapidly becoming
a destination for foodies, arts lovers and outdoor
recreationalists. There are ample indoor and outdoor
activities and in the summertime, the Skowhegan area
becomes a hub for summer festivals and fairs, making
it a can’t-miss destination. It’s the perfect getaway for
a weeklong exploration or a weekend away. The name
‘Skowhegan’ literally means ‘A Place to Watch’, and
like a self-fulfilling prophecy, the region has become
exactly that.
Depending on who you ask, you may come up
with two dozen answers to the question, ‘What’s the
best thing to do in Skowhegan’? One answer is to get
immersed in the arts scene, led by Lakewood Theater
in Madison (www.lakewoodtheater.org) the oldest
summer theater in the country that produces a nine
show season over 18 weeks. Another destination is
the Skowhegan State Fairgrounds which has activities
every weekend from horse & dog agility shows, to the
Artisan Bread Fair (Aug. 1), or the Skowhegan State
Fair (Aug. 13-22).
Gifford’s Ice Cream was started in Skowhegan,
and their ice cream stand on Route 201 turns 35 this
year. You won’t want to miss the New Balance factory
store, or their large tent sale happening August 12-24.
If museums are your thing, you could spend
hours exploring the Skowhegan History House and
the Margaret Chase Smith Museum in Skowhegan, or
the L.C. Bates Museum on the campus of Good Will-
Hinckley, in Hinckley.
Outdoor excursions await the adventurer as
Skowhegan is home to several top notch walking
trails, and is the gateway to northern Maine with
whitewater rafting and mountain hikes just 30-
60 minutes away. Also Lakewood Golf Course is
challenging for any golfers in the family.
For music lovers there are several local
restaurants and pubs that have live entertainment,
and the Sunday night concerts in Coburn Park in
Skowhegan are a ritual for many in July and August.
Finally, wash all of your activities down at some great
restaurants like the Heritage House Restaurant, the
Old Mill Pub, Lakewood Inn Restaurant or the Pickup
Café, located in the Somerset Grist Mill, which is
a grain mill converted out of
the old county jail.
There is so much to
see in Skowhegan, and we
would love to show it all to
you. For more information
with the recruitment of the school’s
board of directors, filing of the
501 (c) (3) application, and will
work to provide the Maine Charter
School Commission with evidence
of fiduciary stability and long-term
sustainability--especially in the
areas of enrollment management
and ongoing compliance with state
and federal secondary school curriculum
guidelines.
As the initiative continues to
gain momentum, the full Board of
Directors will be in place by early
fall and plans will begin for the
proposed upgrades in buildings and
infrastructure. The public charter
school initiative will complement
Snow Pond Center for the Arts’ desire
to be a year-round, community
engaged campus for arts education,
afterschool programming, adult
education, performance, and community
outreach.
The vision for Snow Pond
Arts Academy and the potentially
unlimited associated programming
emanates from John Wiggin who
is the current Executive Director of
New England Music Camp and the
reason why the campus has already
become a valued community asset.
New England Music Camp was
founded by John’s family in the
1930’s and it has served as a model
for combining rich exposure to
the fine arts, especially music, with
a well rounded camp curriculum
in a Maine setting of unparalleled
beauty.
While other public charter
schools in Maine have focused on
particular academic disciplines
such as the natural sciences or
STEM education, Snow Pond Arts
Academy will be the first charter
school in Maine to offer year-round
programming and enrichment in a
venue that is a camp, a school and a
center for the performing arts. The
charter school movement in Maine
was designed to generate alternative
secondary school pedagogies
in an atmosphere that fosters community
growth and development.
Snow Pond Arts Academy will
be the model for the next generation
of charter schools in Maine:
a campus where the vibrancy of
the arts will nurture community
involvement and serve the local
population, the State of Maine and
potentially students from around
the world.
