Writers Conference Staff<br />
Ready for June 26 Session<br />
Miss Caroline Gordon and J. F. Powers,<br />
two prominent modem writers, have<br />
been added to the faculty <strong>of</strong> the second<br />
annual Writers' Conference to be held<br />
June 26 to July 1 at the <strong>University</strong>.<br />
Miss Gordon, who will join the staff<br />
<strong>of</strong> the novel workshop at the Conference,<br />
is noted as a novelist, critic and short<br />
story writer. Among her recent works<br />
are "The Women on the Porch" and<br />
"The Forest <strong>of</strong> the South."<br />
One <strong>of</strong> the best known <strong>of</strong> contemporary<br />
short story authors, Mr. Powers will<br />
be a member <strong>of</strong> the staff <strong>of</strong> the short<br />
fiction workshop <strong>of</strong> the Conference. His<br />
recent collection <strong>of</strong> short stories, "The<br />
Prince <strong>of</strong> Darkness," has been widely acclaimed<br />
by critics.<br />
Miss Gordon and Mr. Powers complete<br />
the faculty for the conference. Other<br />
members <strong>of</strong> the "staff, all members <strong>of</strong> the<br />
Department <strong>of</strong> English, include the Eev.<br />
Leo L. Ward, C.S.C, Head <strong>of</strong> the Department<br />
<strong>of</strong> English, who is a short<br />
story writer, critic and anthologist; Pr<strong>of</strong>essor<br />
John Frederick Nims, one-time editor<br />
<strong>of</strong> "Poetry" and author <strong>of</strong> poems<br />
which have appeared in national magazines;<br />
Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Richard Sullivan, author<br />
<strong>of</strong> three full-length novels as well as<br />
numerous short stories; and Pr<strong>of</strong>essor<br />
John T. Frederick, conductor for seven<br />
years <strong>of</strong> the program "Of Men and<br />
Books" over the Columbia Broadcasting<br />
System, and editor <strong>of</strong> "The Midland"<br />
for twenty years.<br />

Fellowship Aid Given<br />
255 Graduate Students<br />
A total ot 255 students, more than<br />
one-half <strong>of</strong> the graduate enrollment,<br />
currently are on the roster <strong>of</strong> appointments<br />
<strong>of</strong> the Graduate School at the<br />
<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Notre</strong> <strong>Dame</strong>, according to<br />
an announcement by the Rev. Philip S.<br />
Moore, C.S.C, Dean <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Notre</strong> <strong>Dame</strong><br />
Graduate School.<br />
Father Moore, in making the announcement,<br />
pointed out that in terms<br />
<strong>of</strong> dollars these appointments amount to<br />
approximately $120,000 for the academic<br />
semester, or nearly a quarter <strong>of</strong> a million<br />
dollars for the schoolyear.<br />
Of the total number <strong>of</strong> appointments,<br />
according to Father Moore, 131 are<br />
Teaching Fellowships. The graduate<br />
teaching fellows assist in the undergraduate<br />
instruction in the several<br />
departments.<br />
Forty-two are appointments to research<br />
on government scientific programs<br />
at <strong>Notre</strong> <strong>Dame</strong>. These forty-two<br />
do not include the six students at <strong>Notre</strong><br />
<strong>Dame</strong> wiio hold fellowships from the<br />
Atomic Energy Commission.'<br />
Others include endowed and industrial<br />
fellowships, research and technical<br />
assistantships, as well as grants in aid<br />
and employment services.<br />
