Sands Recognizes Scholarship Recipients 6 June 2012 Congratulations to Navleen Bhatia and Taylor Goto. Both students have been awarded scholarships to help them in their pursuit of post-secondary education. Navleen is this years recipient of the David C. Lam/BC TEAl ESL Scholarship, valued at $2500. Awarded earlier in May, at Capilano University, this scholarship recognizes an ESL student graduating from a B.C. Secondary School who has combined academic competence with school or community service and who wishes to further his/her education at a post-secondary institution in British Columbia. Taylor's strong work ethic earned her a Major Entrance Award from the University of British Columbia, valued at $40,000 over four years. Good luck to both Taylor and Navleen as they begin their post-secondary studies in the Fall. JUNE LIBRARY NEWS Sands Super Readers 7 June 2012 June 2012 marks the end of another successful year at Sands Library. A significant event was the "Sands Super Readers" Awards ceremony held on May 24th in the library. Ms. McGreevey, accompanied by Mr. Woloshen, presented Chapters gift certificates to students for outstanding achievement in reading. Thirtyseven students read over 800 books and were awarded gift certificates. Special recognition must go to Grade 8 student Mary Gao who read over 80 books and the other top readers: in grade nine Jessica Zeuch, in grade 10 Elizabeth Russell, in grade 11 Amanda Serek, and the top grade 12 readers Gillian Wenzlaff and Angad Kalra. I would like to thank our principal, Ms. Beaulieu, for her continued support of the Sands Super Readers and also thank Dave Arora of Panago Pizza for donating free pizza certificates to the Sands Super Readers as a reward for their reading. Finally, the library staff, Kari McGreevey (teacher-librarian) and Jennifer Peat (lunch-hour supervisor), would like to wish all of you a safe and restful summer vacation and, please, make time for a good book!
