He instead accepteda position as lead designer for a handmadeceramic tile business in New Jersey. In the two years that followed, Hintonapplied for teaching jobs at colleges anduniversities, and he eventually found hisway to Louisburg College.“I believe that being visually literateis a vital component of the liberal artsexperience which Louisburg Collegeoffers. I trust the academic freedom Ihave in the classes I teach. After 24 years,I still find this to be an exciting, engagingenvironment in which to work each day,”Hinton said. For 50 semesters, he has challenged, mentored and inspired. He is a favoriteamong students, fondly remembered byalumni, and respected by his colleagues.Win Neagle is chair of the division ofhumanities at Louisburg College.Having worked with Hinton for manyyears, he has witnessed his co-worker’sability to engage students.“Will Hinton is one part genius, onepart saint, and one part madman stuffedinto an offensive lineman’s body,” Neaglesaid. “For a student, he is a life-changingexperience waiting to happen. Hiscommitment to his profession and theyoung people he teaches is extraordinaryand touching.”Hinton recently addressed students, faculty and staff as the keynote speaker atspring convocation. His talk focused onfaith. He took the stage with force, beginning his address by unabashedlysinging the theme song to the HBOtelevision series The Wire. Eyes closed, thesinging professor garnered the attentionof his audience. He urged students torecognize that God is both imminentlyand transcendentally present in our lives, that faith can be eclectic and pluralistic, and that it is important to have enoughcourage in your faith to ask the difficultquestions. ten when standing on the precipice that great acts are achieved. Itpatient and learn from failure, andhe inspired listeners with personalreflections about faith.“I am led by faith to let God be thelight in which I see the world around me.My conception of being created in theimage of God has nothing whatsoever todo with being a white, male, middle classAmerican. To be created in the imageof God, for me, refers to forgiveness, humility and faith. The only way I canwrap my head around this idea of faithis to live a life of knowledge, love andacceptance - not one of perception, ego and achievement,” Hinton told thecrowd. It is perhaps this concept of love andacceptance that has afforded Hinton asuccessful career in higher education -and he is in good company. The Collegehas been fortunate to have many talentedand dedicated professors throughoutits history; and, for an institutionthat promotes its proud tradition oftransforming lives, faculty members likeHinton are fundamental to this mission. His classroom encourages students touncover places deep inside themselvesas they travel through their academicjourneys. He is a reflection of theinstitution’s strong academic traditionand the opportunities the Collegecontinues to provide for students today.Looking AheadIn 2007, the College celebrated its220th birthday. Founders’ Day was heldin February, and festivities included theplacing of a commemorative wreath onthe gravesite of Matthew Dickinson, the first preceptor of the Franklin MaleAcademy. The landmark anniversary gives reasonto honor the longevity and historicsignificance of the institution, but theCollege’s leaders are also laying out plansfor the school’s future. In his first year at Louisburg, PresidentClyburn worked with the board oftrustees to outline strategic goals for theCollege. These initiatives include pursuingmodel faith-based programs andoutcomes; rewarding quality faculty andestablishing new academic programsand services; attracting academicallyprepared students and achieving abalanced student community throughstrengthened enrollment standards andinitiatives; articulating the value of theCollege to constituencies; addressingdeferred building maintenance withhistoric sensitivity; and securing newfunding sources, maintaining financialstability, and focusing on value-addedinvestments.The board of trustees also approvedthree new concepts to begin with the2008-2009 academic year. These includethe implementation of a tobacco-freecampus, a student dress code, andrequired chapel and assembly. Thenew policies will be finalized followingstudent, staff and faculty input and aresubject to trustee review.Amid challenges to strengthen thefinancial stability of the College, Clyburnhas put the institution on a path that hebelieves will increase revenues, reduceexpenditures, maintain quality, andassure a bright future for the historiccollege.“I am convinced that the College ismoving in the right direction, and wewill continue to move forward withgreater efficiency and fiscal health inthe months and years ahead,” Clyburnsaid. “The enduring school must havea clearly articulated mission and vision. We have both. Our vision statement isthat Louisburg College will be the modelchurch-related school that preparesstudents for life and service.”The School that Transforms LivesThere is a phrase that is frequentlyrepeated by Louisburg College alumni.I would not be where I am today if it werenot for Louisburg College. These wordshave been uttered by doctors, teachers, attorneys, ministers and CEOs. Whilethey reminisce about championshipgames, parties and friends, they alsoremember that Louisburg Collegeprovided them with opportunity.Hinton has a talk that he givesto prospective college students. Thepresentation is about transition, reachinginto the unknown, and growing as acommunity. He gives students large, numberedtiles, and the students work together toarrange them in a giant square on thefloor. Once the task is completed, thetiles are turned over and an entirely newimage is revealed.“Metacognition is a fancy word thatcan mean to change what you know,” hetells students. He assures them that the“renaissance state of mind” is alive andwell at Louisburg.“The Louisburg College experiencewill enable you to gain confidence inyourself. As a faculty member, I makethat commitment to you,” he said. “Eachof you brings different learning toolsto the table. We will help you sharpenthese tools. We will help you find yourindividual voice.”The Power of NowIn an increasingly competitive market, colleges and universities vie for theattention of savvy student consumers. It’s an aggressive business where wealthoften seems to dominate. Still, LouisburgCollege endures. For 221 years, the College has carriedout its mission of providing studentswith a supportive and nurturingcommunity that is rooted in faith andinvites young men and women to learnand grow.Perhaps, it is people that perpetuatethe College’s endurance. The school isrich with professors who inspire studentsto learn, coaches who motivate theirplayers, students who are engaged inthe academic process, and alumni andfriends who give back.In the years ahead, the College willcontinue to make transformations of itsown in order to secure its place in today’sacademic world. It is often when standing on theprecipice that great acts are achieved.C O L U M N S 13being visually literate is a vital component of the liberal arts experi

Windows for EducationPeer out a window in Main Buildingtoday, and you’ll likely see a studentstrolling along chatting on a cell phone,a group of students piling out of anSUV, or a jogger listening to an i-pod.Now, picture this scene.Replace the cell phone user with aUnion soldier carrying a Colt revolver.Instead of students climbing froman SUV, picture four to five hundredsoldiers in tents across the campus. Inplace of the jogger and his i-pod, anarmy surgeon dispensing morphine andquinine.Constructed in 1857, the viewfrom the windows of Main Buildinghas changed many times over the last150 years; however, one thing holdstrue. The building’s occupants haveconsistently sought the same thing:enlightenment through education. It’sinteresting to imagine the differentscenes Louisburg College students havewatched unfold from their dormrooms. Today, the United MethodistMen want to change the way the schoolviews its future – literally.Windows for Education is a campaign sponsored by the Raleigh District of The United Methodist Men. The campaign seeks to replace 411 windows acrosscampus, many of which are in disrepair.President Emeritus Dr. Reginald Ponder is excited about the campaign and the college’s relationship with the United Methodist Men.“The four buildings that will receive the new windows provide the historic core of the Louisburg College campus and need these vital improvements,” Pondersaid. “For nearly forty years, the Raleigh District United Methodist Men have held their annual retreat on the campus of Louisburg College. These men are fullycommitted to the mission of Louisburg College, and they have supported that mission through providing scholarships.”In addition to endowed scholarships, the Raleigh District generously gave to Louisburg College in the 1980s by providing substantial funding for theconstruction of Benson Chapel on campus. The organization is asking for tax-deductible donations to replace windows in historic campus buildings. A new window may be given in honor or memory ofa person, class, church or business. A plaque will be prepared for each new window.“The Windows for Education project is a continuation of the important partnership between Louisburg College and the Raleigh District United MethodistMen,” Ponder said. The windows will be new, as will be the scenes that take place outside them.
