IN FOKUSThe winners of the "Doorways of the Future"Innovation Competition imagineTwo first places and one third placecomprise the result of the VBH doorwaysInnovation Competition. Thebroad spectrum of ideas and suggestionssubmitted shows that there continuesto be potential in the furtherdevelopment of the entrances to ourhouses. In the future, the entrancesof buildings may be completely differentfrom what we imagine today. At thefensterbau/frontale the winning worksof the three prize-winners wereunveiled to the public. Two first equal places were awarded atthe prize ceremony of the InnovationCompetition: Architect Peter Haimerl,Munich, in cooperation with Z-Fenster-Technik, Hausen/Herrnwahlthann, andPetra Elfriede Gumbrecht of Bau3Architects, Nuremberg, together withTrendTüren from Beilngries, receivedthe highest award for of their respectivedesigns. In the 3rd place, the jurychose the design of the three Mastersstudents from Ebern: Soren Sauer,Alexander Hörner and Thomas Kelleras well as Dipl.-Eng. Renee Lorenzfrom Grub am Forst. The task was to design a doorway forresidential buildings with one or moreresidential units. VBH offered prizes of€20,000 with the aim to promote innovationin combining new techniquesand materials and to create interfacesbetween industry, contractors andarchitects to ensure the future compatibilityof individual elements. In total14 works were judged by the jury. TheInnovation Competition was supportedby co-sponsors Athmer, Dr. Hahn, esco, Fuhr, GEZE, HOPPE, Kaba,Roto and Simonswerk.Left: The winners and organisers of the "Doorways of the Future" Innovation CompetitionMagazin 04/2011 01/2012 VBH 077

IN FOKUS1. PrizeThe front door is a universe"Front doors comprise a universe, because they combine numerous elementsand functions and are highlycomplex. So doors are always a challengefor architects and we took greatinterest in participating in the competition",explained Petra ElfriedeGumbrecht concerning their motivation. From their office employing sixprofessionals, Bau3 deals mainlywith public buildings and renovationprojects. The focus was therefore onthe idea of a multifunctional door thatis used for all types of buildings. His company has been working inthe field for over 80 years and threegenerations and has since 2009 beenspecialising in the area of housedoors. "It was therefore important toprovide a design that on the one handexhausts all the possibilities and onthe other, optimises the manufacturingand assembly aspects."Together with Richard Burger fromTrendTüren they accordingly establishedall the necessary factors withwhich a door in the future must comply."In terms of stability, lighting, communications, thermal insulation andaccessibility, doors are currently stillfar from achieving what is technicallypossible and even what is sometimesalso required," said Richard Burger. The design by Bau3 and TrendTürentherefore integrates all the essentialdetails of the doorway into the surroundingframe, such as control panel, mailbox and lighting. The framework isflexible in both new and old buildingsand can be used with a removabledoor panel, similar to a mobile phoneskin that conforms to the design preferencesof the residents.08VBH Magazin 01/2012

Photo at the top: Mark Röser, director of category management of VBH awards the winner'scertificate to Elfriede Gumbrecht and Richard Burger, who (photo middle and bottom) take theopportunity to explain the door entrance (photo below right). The centre left photo shows themoment of revelation. One aspect that featured strongly inthe design was the lighting, which atthe same time provides illuminationand creates an atmosphere; but on theother hand though light warning signalscan indicate dangerous situationswhen an emergency call should bemade, as well as assisting accessibility. Here not only wider, higher standarddimensions and a low thresholdwere realised but the entire communicationat the door is accessed by adisplay panel that is positioned on theone hand according to the body size ofthe user, while on the other hand, permitsreciprocation of messages fromthe postman, the residents or visitors. Inthe letterbox, the team proposed a solutionthat corresponds to 100 percent ofthe energy performance of the door paneland yet is easily accessible from theinterior area. The jury praised the design and thus thecompleteness of the addressing of relevantissues concerning the entrance:"The design offers individuality andvariability through a high concentrationof resources. Likewise, the solutionsoffered can be easily implemented andstandardised, both in new buildings andold buildings."Magazin 01/2012 VBH09

IN FOKUS1. PrizeNew entrances permitentirely new house designsThe SWYFE design by Peter Haimerlbreaks new ground: "We believe thebasic principle of doors should becompletely rethought. Existing doorsare usually ponderous, massive andoften more like protective armourthan inviting, "says the architect fromMunich. "Instead, new forms shouldbe light and thin and work weightlessly."The design therefore reduces thedoor to the outside to two narrow slitsintersecting at right angles. The dooropening takes place similar to a bimetal, with a curvature of the door sheetthat fits organically into the building, while also allowing elements such aslighting or ringing functions to be integratedinto the facade. A small red dotis used as a lock, bell and handle atthe same time.Along with his colleagues Peter Haimerlhas been focusing on the developmentof urban design concepts andthe urban environments of tomorrowfor the last 20 years. Along with UlrichPape, an industrial designer who wasalso instrumental in the design, hewas tempted by the futuristic approachof the VBH Innovation Competition. With Z-Fenster-Technik from Hausen/Herrnwahlthann, they found an experiencedpartner with which to implementit. With a total of 250 employeesin multiple locations, the companyhas been manufacturing quality windowsand doors for 125 years. SteffiZizlsperger found the idea of movingin other dimensions very interesting:10VBH Magazin 01/2012

IN FOKUSCreative enterprise: Formed in a loft in Munich Peter Haimerl's architecture firm'sfuturistic designs"The technical realisation of the designis a challenge – but doable. Lookingbeyond the four walls of the doorindustry, for example in the automotiveindustry, has shown us that initialsolutions in the area of gaskets andfasteners are already available. We willtherefore continue to pursue the designand in any case present a functioningmodel no later than 2014 at the nextfensterbau/frontale."The jury of the contest was alsoimpressed by the innovative openingmechanism: "Although the technicalsolution for this mechanism andmany other aspects are not presentedin detail, the design has merit basedon its unique organic opening methodand the attention paid to the suggestivepower of the images."According to Peter Haimerl the trendin architecture is geared more andmore in the direction of organic ororganic. "Today's technologies allow forthat too, as our tests on theoretical andpractical models of our door show." Helooks at the VBH Innovation Competitionin terms of opportunities for completelynew buildings: "New, modified input conditionsare good starting points for brandnew house designs in the future."Bottom: with the winner's certificate on the VBH stand at fensterbau/frontale 2012From left to right: Ulrich Pape, Peter Haimerl, Steffi Zizlsperger (Z-Fenster-Technik),and Susanne Julinek.Magazin 01/2012 04/2011 VBH 11

IN FOKUS3. PrizeEnergy-insulated facades combine withspace-saving accessibilityA space-saving entrance situation, uninvited guests are not barbariansat the gates of Rome, was the ideabehind the "Floating Portal" design bySoren Sauer, Alexander Hörner andThomas Keller of the master schoolin Ebern. Double doors welcome visitorsby opening to their view, but atthe expense of the inner perspective, which is pushed back when opened. To create a more equitable entrancesituation, they chose the principle ofthe sliding door. For a sustainablesolution, the draft was also designedas a complete facade element, whichallows the retrofitting of existing buildingsin the door, for example, as partof energy-efficiency reorganisation. The concept envisages that the doorfit flush to the exterior of the insulationin the wall. Unlocking is accomplishedby finger scan; the openingis achieved by a motor. From theinside it can be operated using atouchscreen display. A pneumaticrubber membrane provides the necessaryweather-tightness of the door.In the implementation of the prototypeit was confirmed that VBH, pursuedby its competitors, can benefit fromcloser collaboration between planners, architects, manufacturers and industryin developing new techniques whichbear fruit and drive innovation, such asChristian Gebert and Rainer Mahr fromGeorg Ackermann GmbH in Wiesenbronnhave shown. Their task for the masterstudents from Ebern was the to implementthe concept for everyday use. "Inorder to allow ground level access, theproposal envisages a three-point suspensionof the sliding door. In this waya guide rail on the ground can be dispensedwith," said Rainer Mahr. "Thisis a point in which theory and practicediverge widely." But in close and goodcooperation with GEZE we could useexisting hardware in new combinationsand thus solve the new mission." Thecooperation with Roto also went smoothly."Only through the close cooperationof all parties is a new development possible,"said Mahr. He has had years ofexperience in the construction of windowsand doors, as, until a few yearsago, Georg Ackermann GmbH wasstill active in the area. Meanwhile, theirspecialty is in the folding, rounding andbending of wood materials. Almost everybend and curvature can be producedwith the company's patented Flexformplus slot plates made of wood and plaster. The range of tasks is therefore oftencomprised of exhibition booths or modelmaking, such as a realistic model ofthe Elbe Philharmonic Hall in Hamburg.Photo above: Rainer Mahr works on the prototype.Below: Frank Ackerman and Christian Gebertwith the prototype of the master students from Ebern.12VBH Magazin 01/2012

SIMPLY EVERYTHINGVBH paves the way to newtechnologiesIn search for innovation, the experts inwindow and door hardware from VBHregularly look beyond their own industryhorizons to expand their view. Forin the combination of new technologies, for example from the telecommunicationsand automotive industries, there often emerge new product solutionsfor window and door manufacturers.Several new products werefirst introduced to the internationalaudience at the fensterbau/frontal: agreenteQ window catch with built-inalarm and air-conditioning function, the greenteQ Jet-Fast fast chipboardscrew with patented thread geometryand greenteQ mortise locks.greenteQ window catch alarm with climate control functionand cell phone technology"With our new VDS-certified greenteQwindow catch alarm with climate controlfunction, electronics technologieswere employed that have already beenproven in millions of mobile phones. The combination allows the placementof important functions in a very smallspace and an aesthetic form factor– and all at a reasonable price, "saysMarkus Roeser, Category Manager atVBH. The new greenteQ window catchintegrates the entire alarm and air conditioningtechnology in the rosette –including commercial ½ AA battery, 3-Dmotion sensor and climate sensor. Inthe event of a glass breakage or shatteringof the window a clear warningsignal (110 to 115 dB) is emitted. A lightring signals a high humidity level with aconcomitant need for ventilation. Otherbenefits include easy installation andease of use in the function and batteryreplacement. All existing windowscan be upgraded easily and quickly byreplacing the handles. By closing thewindow (handle in six-o-clock-setting)the alarm is automatically activatedand a confirmation tone generated. Onopening, the feature is disabled automatically. The small footprint of mobiletechnology also allows for an almostuniform appearance with handles fromthe existing greenteQ window handlerange. Expected from August, the newgreenteQ window handle is availablein a stainless steel version from VBH.Other shapes and designs to follow. The rapid screw: greenteQJet-FastWith the greenteQ Jet-Fast chipboardscrew, VBH presents a solution tomake window and door manufacturers, craftsmen and technicians' daily workmuch easier. greenteQ Jet-Fast is fast, stable and suitable for universal use inwood and wood composite materialsand plastics. The secret is the patentedthread design that allows for faster andeasier countersinking of the screw. Theeasy penetration of the materials andthe removal of chips securely deliversvarious concave threaded inserts. Adual countersunk head with milling ribsprovides a clean penetration and evenin peripheral areas thanks to a countersinkslit the screw can fix in combinationwith a serrated shatterproof blade. The fast screw is one of the highlights inthe extended range of greenteQ rangeof fixings and is now available in differentsizes and lengths of 16-120 mm, asPZD Phillips or i-Star (TX) with full orpartial thread.14VBH Magazin 01/2012
