21With winter fast approaching and the darker evenings, may Iurge all cyclists young and not so young to make sure that they do notride without lights. It is not only a question of being visible but also forcyclists to be able to see the road. The Fire and Rescue Service will be pleased to replace out of datesmoke alarms for the elderly, vulnerable and families with small children. The modern alarm will last for 10 years before the battery runs out. Yourhome can be checked for fire hazards and warnings given where excesspaper and card is hoarded. Everyone is urged to use the re-cycling binsand de-clutter the house. For advice re smoke alarms telephone theKent Fire and Rescue Service Tel: 0800 9237000. They really are afriendly and helpful bunch.Neighbourhood Watch recently held its AGM. All committee memberswere re-elected and we look forward to doing what we can to keep thevillage safe. Community Warden Bob Priestley is very supportive toNHW and is a much respected member of the Parish, he is always onthe lookout for problems in the village and is especially good atcontacting Trading Standards and dealing with fly tipping.Cold callers have recently been calling on householders offering newdriveways and house painting. Please do not accept these offers.Always get three estimates and whereever possible use local traderswho you know. Be very wary of white vans unmarked or others that onlyuse a mobile phone number. You do not know where they have travelledfrom or how shoddy the work could be. If in doubt contact Bob PriestleyTel 07811271299 and please look out for elderly and vulnerableneighbours who could be tempted by these doorstop sellers. The guest speaker at the AGM was Angela Vince from the ShepwayLifeline. She spoke eloquently about the benefits of wearing an alarmfor emergencies whether it be a fall or dealing with nuisance callers. The cost is £2.90 per week but could be a lifesaver. Angela told us ofsome users who are living alone and are quite lonely so no one mindsif they press the button in the morning to reassure the centre staff thatthey are up and dressed and all is well. Better that than risking a falland being left unaided for hours or even days. These bracelets reallycan be lifesavers. The Shepway Lifeline Tel. No. is 01303 242615 or242971 for a free demonstration in your home.Keep safe and warm.Neighbourhood Watch andCommunity Warden NewsSheila Smith - Eastry Neighbourhood Watch.
