REEDONIANNewsletterSUMMER EDITION 28, 2011THE HEADMASTER’S SABBATICALAnne and I had a wonderful time in the United States last term and enjoyed a welcome period of reflection afterthirteen years in office. However, a period of sustained absence from the family atmosphere of Reed’s madeus realise how much the School and all those involved with the School mean to us. There continues to be much forall to be intensely proud of as we move towards our Bicentenary celebrations in 2013 to 2014. Reed’s School hasa growing reputation as a consequence of setting new standards academically, culturally and in sport. We begin2011 with exciting developments in Design and Technology and new possibilities in Science and Golf. Reflectingon our time in the States and on this time in Reed’s School’s history, as we lead up to our Bicentenary, we shouldconsider putting still greater emphasis upon independent and creative thinking, charity and community spirit, andpoliteness and optimism, all of which are strongly embedded in the United States’ culture.David Jarrett, Headmaster• James Chicken offered a place at HomertonCollege, Cambridge, and Jamie Reid who leftReed’s last summer secures a place at OrielCollege, Oxford• Work begins on our new state-of-the-art Design& Technology centre• 52 Pupils from College Bel Air, France, visitReed’s School• Ethan Kelly wins Boys’ Intermediate ChallengeCup in the Richmond Music Festival• Charlotte Buijs & Alexander Truelove selectedto take part in CCF Exercises in Canada withonly 12 British cadets accepted on each course• Swimming - ISSA championships all teams finishin the top 11 places; in the Bath Cup & OtterMedley the team comes in 7th place• Hockey - U14 team through to Regional FinalsGirls win Plate competition at the St George’s 6s• Golf - A team through to the Regional Final ofthe HMC Golf Foursomes• Rugby - Captain of Rugby, Joe Walker, selectedto play for the South East U18s• Skiing - Boys’ A team wins Gold in Dual Slalom& ‘Overall Best School’; B team finish 5thoverall; individual medals for Roy Steudle, SamStephens, James Sieber, Charlie McWilliams &Rowan Bollands. THE HEADMASTER praises the U.S. on theirradical thinking, charity, sense of pride and optimismwas lucky enough to be granted a Sabbatical term last autumn byI the Governors and spent the majority of it travelling over twentytwothousand miles around the United States of America. I visitedvarious schools, colleges and universities and met some former pupilsof Reed’s too. America is far from perfect but it has a lot of good aboutit. Educationally in terms of knowledge and ground covered at theSecondary or High School level they are about a year, if not more, behind the United Kingdom, some would say even one and a half totwo years behind. However, both at High School and University levelthey really push creative, independent and radical thinking. This iswhat many of our top Universities look for. I discussed this in Assemblyat the beginning of term with our pupils and asked them to take amoment to consider when was the last time they had an originalthought; composed something on their own; tried somethingintellectually new; wrote a poem or painted a picture which wasn’tbased on something else before. This world more than ever is goingto need creative, original, independent thinkers. The Americans –because of course they had a revolution against us not so long ago– actually prize freedom and radical, revolutionary thinkers muchhigher than we do. The idea of contributing to your communityis in-built in the American philosophy, psyche and culture. Manycontribute financially to their local library, museum, art gallery, schoolor church if they can afford to. Year groups at school and Universityget together before they leave to contribute financially to theirinstitution and will do so for the rest of their lives. If they can’t affordmoney then they will contribute to their community in other ways, forinstance by cooking for the elderly or sweeping the streets. They holdtheir soldiers and their veterans in high esteem and are proud to servetheir country and of the men and women who do so. The Americansare an optimistic people – in spite of some of the horrors their countryhas experienced – the destruction of the twin towers; high gun crime;frightening numbers of missing children. They are also a polite people– very friendly and chatty despite sometimes rightly being accused ofbeing rather inward-looking. Their service industries are exceptional;friendly and polite shop assistants, bank tellers, waiters and waitresses– even the customs police are getting friendlier. They will all say “havea nice day” and mean it.We can learn from these points and I would like those ideas oforiginal thinking, charity, community spirit, pride in one’s country andservicemen, politeness and optimism to be the aim of every singlepupil both this term and in the future.David JarrettTop: the Headmaster and O.R. REED’S SCHOOL LOOKS TO THE FUTURE as itlaunches the campaign to support the new D&T centreA bird’s eye view of the new Design & Technology centre at Reed’s SchoolReed’s School is currently considering the key focus for itsBicentenary celebrations across the academic year 2013–2014.The vision of the School’s Founder, Andrew Reed, will be centralto all these deliberations with the aim of continuing the School’soutstanding work for not only its own pupils, but for the widercommunity in providing generations of children access to educationalopportunities that they would otherwise never have had. Withthis in mind Reed’s School is delighted to announce that planningpermission has been granted for a new Design &Technology centreat the School. In all the School’s projects there is careful considerationof how developments will not only allow pupils and staff to set evenhigher standards but also how any new facilities will help the localcommunity by creating opportunities for all. In February 2011 the firstphase of plans began to develop further state- of-the-art facilities fordesign, engineering and technology on the School site. Located inprime position at the top of the School drive, the new facility will formpart of a hub for learning for both Reed’s School pupils and for thewider community including those within the School’s State SchoolForums. This group of state primary and secondary schools, fromboth the local area and Inner London, are currently all benefitingfrom a range of enriching activities organised by Reed’s. This includesPrimary Engineer, a programme which encourages pupils to designand make their own model vehicles and to enter them into a funand enriching competition. The spirit of designing and buildingproducts for the market place will be a focus for activity in the newbuilding, and we are sure that our pupils at Reed’s School will rise tothe challenge and embrace the new technology. Amongst some ofother innovative plans, the Design & Technology building will providea resistant materials suite with tooling and workshop facilities for 3Dmodelling and material experimentation. Young designers will beengaged in activities devised to encourage entrepreneurism, problemsolving, and creativity of an aesthetic and technical nature with anoverarching emphasis on sustainability. “This will be a breakthroughfacility to advance creative and entrepreneurial thinking in youngminds. It is wonderful that this resource will not only be used byour students but by our partners in the Primary and Secondary StateSchool Forum which we have established over the last two years,”said the Headmaster. We would like to ensure that everyone within the Reed’s Schoolcommunity has the opportunity to be part of this new facility, and theDevelopment Office will soon be launching exciting ways to supportthe School in its construction.Richard Garrett“Patriotism is easy to understand in America - it means looking out for yourself by looking out for your country”Calvin Coolidge5

PRIMARY & SECONDARY FORUMS GATHER PACEReed’s Secondary Forum Schools radiate an interest in ScienceReed’s School further enhanced its reputation as a school that iswilling to take the initiative and lead in areas of need throughthe development of enrichment activities for state school students insubject areas where there is a national skills shortage. Much is beingachieved as a result of forming long term partnerships with schoolsand with The University of Surrey, SEPnet (The South East PhysicsNetwork), The Smallpeice Trust and The Ogden Trust. The ViceChancellor of the University of Surrey, Chris Snowden, said, “Nearly100 students from The Holy Cross Girls School, Glyn TechnologyCollege, Archbishop Tennison School, Bexley Business Academy andBishopsford Arts College came to Reed’s School to enjoy developingtheir understanding of energy with interactive exhibits on hydroelectricity, wave tanks, thermal camera, conduction and radiation. The students then went on to the University of Surrey to visit theAdvanced Technology Institute, the Radiation laboratories, andSurrey Satellite Centre at the University. The University welcomes theopportunity to work with Reed’s School in this initiative to reach out toschools and colleges in the region with the aim of stimulating interestand excitement in science, engineering and technology.”Development Director, Richard Garrett comments, “We are all keen tohelp make physics and engineering more accessible to young peoplefrom all backgrounds and this fits with our ethos. It is hoped thatsome of the students attending these courses may eventually go onto study physics at A Level and degree level and become enthusedabout careers in physics and engineering. It is of great significance forus to be working in partnership with The University of Surrey, SEPnet,The Smallpeice Trust and The Ogden Trust”Richard GarrettStudents enjoying the exhibits at the Surrey SEPnet day at Reed’sPHOTOGRAPH COURTESY OF THE SURREY ADVERTISERReed’s Primary Forum Schools ‘Tri-Golf’At the end of 2010 Reed’s School launched its Primary Forumof partnerships with a number of local and Inner-London statePrimary Schools. The objective of the forum is to provide enrichmentactivities for children in the schools and to raise aspirations andperformance. The Forum delivers its activities either through trainingthe teachers or through inviting students to come to Reed’s Schoolto use their facilities. There is the potential for over 4,000 studentsassociated with Reed’s School Primary Forum to be involved in theactivities. Tri-Golf is an initiative that will enable teachers to teachchildren golf in their schools following their training at Reed’s School. The Surrey Golf Union and The Golf Foundation kindly sponsored theevent, meaning the resources can be given to the Primary Schoolsinvolved for no cost.Primary School teachers during their Tri-Golf training at Reed’sPHOTOGRAPH COURTESY OF THE SURREY ADVERTISERAnne Firth, a Year 3 teacher from St. Andrew’s Primary School inCobham commented: “We had a wonderful afternoon at Reed’sSchool and we now have the skills and resources to take the gameof golf to all our children in a fun format. I’m sure they will gain muchfrom it and the best thing is, we don’t need to resource an 18-holecourse to achieve this!”Liz Robinson, Headteacher at Surrey Square School in Southwark andChair of the Primary Schools’ Forum said: “This is such a wonderfulopportunity for us all to share in good practice in our schools. Throughthe leadership of Reed’s School we can develop a programme ofenrichment activities that will raise aspirations and improve the skillsof our students. In addition there is the chance that some pupils maybenefit from an Andrew Reed Foundation Bursary Award.”Richard Garrett6“America has never been united by blood or birth or soil. We are bound by ideals that move us beyond ourbackgrounds, lift us above our interests and teach us what it means to be citizens” George W. Bush

OUTSIDE THE SCHOOL GATESThe Fifth Form go militaryHistory GCSE pupils in the Fifth Form visited two of the finestmilitary museums in the world, the Imperial War Museum andthe National Army Museum. Highlights for the boys were: a visuallystunning video of the Battle of Amiens featuring Peter and Dan Snow;finding the observation car of a German zeppelin which would havedangled 1500m below the giant airship; being treated to a tour deforce of a lecture on the development of British tactics during TheGreat War by Tristan from the National Army Museum and being letloose to handle a superb collection of artefacts ranging from a Vickersgun to a 4 foot long cavalry sword. Peter Chicken remarked that hehad never had to work so hard on a school trip! The boys were a creditto the school on their visit to these museums.Adam Waller“I could not have wished for a better trip. The authenticity of theexhibits and the value of the knowledge I gained will surely help mewith my coursework. Truly brilliant!”Harri Crabbgroup of Lower Sixth Form students visited the House of Lords,A invited by former Chairman of Governors, Lord Bridgeman, whogave us a brief tour on our way to the Debating Chamber where wewere to listen to Question Time. We looked in awe at the amazingarchitecture, art and historic content of the building, met the YeomanBlack Rod and saw the mace being carried into the Chamber aheadof the Lady Speaker. Different topics were discussed such as theEuropean Arrest Warrant, second home owners and design in social“Tristan Langlois’ insightful lecture on the Great War and the stalematebetween Germany and the Allies was the highlight of our trip. Hehad an infectious enthusiasm and an eloquence which engaged hisaudience. Plus we got to hold a sword!”Stephen Hobson“I was surprised by the sheer scale of the objects on display in theImperial War Museum. Truly an excellent day!“Fifth Form History pupils ouside the Imperial War MuseumChristopher JonesL6 Formers experience a heated discussion at the House of Lordsand economic renewal which allowed calm discussion between theLords who waited politely for their turn to speak. The final topic wasespecially relevant to us as it was about youth unemployment and itcaused a heated debate between the Peers with shouts of ‘no, no,no’ when question time was up. After Question Time Lord Bridgemaninvited us to the tea room where we had lovely tea, cakes and scones.I think we all agreed that this was a very successful trip!Charlotte Buijs, L6th Form studentLower Sixth Formers visit the House of LordsEwan Atkinson and Charlie Wright with their robotReed’s Tech team impresses at BETT exhibitionEach year the First Lego League releases a Challenge, which isbased on a real-world scientific topic. The Challenge has twoparts: the Robot Game (programming an autonomous robot to scorepoints on a themed playing field) and the Project (developing a solutionto a problem they have identified). Our pupils conducted a researchproject on the type and frequency of sports injuries by compiling anonline survey for the Reed’s sports scholars to complete, discoveringthat the biggest problem was muscle tear combined with scar tissueformation. They worked with physics teacher Dr. Osborne to developan idea based on nanotechnology to prevent scar tissue forming, thus speeding up recovery and healing and produced a superbdocumentary on the project which was shown at the competition. TheReed’s team won on the robot table and RM were so impressed thatthey were invited to showcase their robot at the BETT (formerly knownas the British Educational Training and Technology Show) exhibition inOlympia where the boys explained how they programmed the robotto professionals from all over the world. The NXT chief programmer hasoffered to come and provide workshops for Reed’s and is also trying toget invitations to the Lego factory in Denmark, an honour testament tothe team’s professionalism throughout.Debbie Adwent“America is much more than a geographical fact.
