Report on performance ASADA ANNUAL REPORT 2010:11Case study: MethylhexaneamineDue to a spike in positive tests for the stimulant methylhexaneamine,ASADA initiated a campaign to notify the sporting community onthe risks of using supplements, using a combination of media andestablished communication channels.At the commencement of the campaign nine athletes had recordedpositive tests for methylhexaneamine over a short period of time. Toplace this into context, in 2009–10 ASADA had a total of 19 positivetests for a range of substances.We wanted to ensure that the wider sporting community receivedthe message that athletes may have been using supplements thatcontained a prohibited substance.On 22 October 2010, we advised sporting organisations that we weremaking a public announcement about methylhexaneamine.The methylhexaneamine warning was launched in the media on23 October 2010. The ASADA Chief Executive Officer, Aurora Andruska,featured in numerous Australian print, television, radio and online media.We supported the media campaign with website information, an email tosporting organisations with information to pass onto their athletes, and theuse of social media to spread the word, including Twitter and Facebook.Electronic templates, as well as newsletter and website copy, wasprovided to NSOs to support key campaign messages.The public information campaign was successful and immediatelyreduced the disturbing trend in positive test results frommethylhexaneamine use. ASADA continues to work with the sportingcommunity to educate athletes and support personnel about thissubstance and supplements.methylhexaneamine Warning Image33
